We are pleased to announce that the World Theatre Day 2026 Celebration will take place from 25 to 27 March 2026 in Luxembourg City.

Initiated by the 𝗜𝗧𝗜 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝘁 in dialogue with the 𝗟𝘂𝘅𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗴 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗧𝗜 (THEATER FEDERATIOUN) and held 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗨𝗡𝗘𝗦𝗖𝗢, the celebration reflects the spirit of the 2026 World Theatre Day Message by Willem Dafoe. It is envisioned as a public and participatory gathering, affirming theatre as a space for artistic reflection and for dialogue on the ethical and social questions of our time.

Organized within the framework of 𝗕𝘂̈𝗵𝗻𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗴 (𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆𝘀) and marking the 𝟯𝟬𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 of THEATER FEDERATIOUN, the event also offers an opportunity to engage with Luxembourg’s vibrant performing arts community and its cultural institutions.

Each year on 27 March, World Theatre Day brings together theatre communities around the world to celebrate theatre as a space for dialogue, reflection, and shared human experience. In a time marked by rapid change and growing distance between people, theatre reminds us of the essential value of presence — a living encounter between artists and audiences that renews our sense of connection and shared humanity.

We are pleased and honored to announce that Willem Dafoe (USA), a distinguished theatre artist and internationally acclaimed actor, is the Author of the World Theatre Day Message 2026.

“2026 ITI International Performing Arts Award”

The International Theatre Institute Republic Korea Center (ITI Korea) announces the International Performing Arts Award (since 2025) to honor a Korean artist who has embodied the spirit of Korean arts from an international perspective. We warmly invite nominations of artists who have highlighted the value of creative and artistic work and the significance of international exchange across diverse genres.

1. Overview
• Award Title: 2026 ITI International Performing Arts Award
• Announcement &Application Period: January 31 (Sun) – February 15 (Sun), 2026
• Number of Awardees: One (1)
• Organizer: The Korean Centre of the International Theatre Institute (ITI)

2. Purpose and Significance
• To honor an artist who has expressed the spirit of Korean arts with an international perspective
• To support artists who have emphasized creative value and international exchange across various genres

3. Procedure
Submission of Nomination : January 31 (Sun)

Application Deadline: February 15 (Sun)

Announcement & Award Ceremony: March 27 (Fri)
※ The award ceremony venue and detailed schedule will be individually notified
to the selected awardee (attendance is mandatory).
※ The above schedule is subject to change depending on circumstances.

4. Eligibility (*Third-party nomination required)
Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:
• Artists with at least 15 years of professional artistic activity since debut
• Artists with international activity experience
• Artists nominated by a trustworthy institution head, educational foundation,
or an ITI executive member (including members of the Steering Committee)

5. Disqualification
• Individuals who have received a sentence or treatment order related to sexual violence crimes
• Individuals under investigation or prosecution for sexual offenses whose cases have not yet reached a final verdict

Dear colleagues and friends,

As I begin my tenure as Director General of ITI, I want to thank you for the trust you place in me.

For over seventy years, ITI has been carried forward by its Centres, Committees, and members — from grand theatres to village squares, from strong institutions to individuals keeping the flame alive. This diversity is our strength, our vitality, and our resilience.

In today’s world of conflict, displacement, and rapid change, ITI must remain what it was created to be: a trusted home for artists, a bridge of dialogue between cultures, and a global advocate for the performing arts.

Our path forward is shaped by three commitments: to connect, to act, and to support. These are not abstract goals, but an invitation to walk side by side and to keep ITI strong, responsive, and open to all.

To begin this journey, the ITI General Secretariat is opening two new positions: 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗿 and 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲 / 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿. I encourage you to 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀 and share them within your networks, so they may reach talented and committed individuals worldwide.
