SURVIVAL MACHINES is a series of five large-scale paintings.
While KAWS‘s other works in the exhibition feature relatively distinct character bodies, in this series, the forms gradually collapse, scatter, and reassemble.

다섯 점의 대형 캔버스 연작 입니다.
이번 전시에 선보이는 카우스의 다른 작품들은 비교적 뚜렷한 캐릭터의 몸을 가지고 있었지만, 이 연작에서는 형상이 조금씩 무너지고, 흩어지고, 다시 조합됩니다.

In SURVIVAL MACHINES, we catch a glimpse of the abstract painting experiments KAWS has been developing since the mid-2010s. From this period onward, the artist began to compose his canvases by taking extreme close-ups of the iconic characters he created, deconstructing, and reconstructing them.

In this series, the silhouette of Elmo from Sesame Street—a familiar character in American children‘s culture—remains as a faint trace. However, the form is no longer intact. Curves and fields of color that look like parts of a face, hands, eyes, and bodies fill the canvas, but they are deconstructed, bordering on abstraction.

〈Survival Machines〉에서 우리는 카우스가 2010년대 중반 이후 전개한 추상 회화 실험을 엿볼 수 있습니다. 작가는 이 시기부터 자신이 만들어온 상징적인 캐릭터들을 극단적으로 클로즈업하고, 해체하고, 재구성하는 방식으로 화면을 구성하기 시작했습니다.

이 연작에는 미국 어린이 문화의 익숙한 캐릭터인 〈세서미 스트리트〉의 엘모 실루엣이 희미한 흔적으로 남아 있습니다. 하지만 그 형상은 더 이상 온전한 캐릭터로 쉽게 읽히지 않습니다. 얼굴, 손, 눈, 몸의 일부처럼 보이는 곡선과 색면이 화면을 가득 채우지만, 그것들은 이미 해체되어 추상의 경계에 놓여 있습니다.

The title SURVIVAL MACHINES sounds somewhat cold. Yet, what is trying to survive within these compositions might be the faces of the characters, or perhaps the fragments of images left in our memories. Familiar figures from pop culture are enlarged, cropped, and separated into color fields and lines, but they do not completely disappear.

They survive as lingering traces within the abstract painting.

〈Survival Machines〉, ‘생존 기계’라는 제목은 조금 차갑게 들립니다. 하지만 이 화면 속에서 살아남으려는 것은 어쩌면 캐릭터의 얼굴일 수도 있고, 우리의 기억 속에 남은 이미지의 조각일 수도 있습니다. 대중문화의 친숙한 형상은 확대되고, 잘리고, 색면과 선으로 분리되지만, 완전히 사라지지는 않습니다.

그것은 추상의 화면 안에서 끝까지 흔적으로 남습니다.

For group visits, docent programs can be arranged through prior reservation. We encourage you to take advantage of these group tours for a more in-depth experience. Our regular docent tours are available at 2PM on weekdays, and at 11AM, 2PM, 4PM on weekends. No prior reservation is required for the regular tours. We hope you discover the deeper stories behind KAWS‘s artwork.

[Kid’s program]
During our kid‘s program last weekend, the children spent time exploring KAWS’s artworks and creating their very own characters. Thanks to their unique perspectives and boundless imagination, each artwork turned out to be truly special.

The program will run again this upcoming weekend on August 22 (Sat) and 23 (Sun). We hope you‘ll join us for another special time.

Eleven CHUM figures stand before us, each with X-ed out eyes and holding a small canvas depicting a fragment of the sea.

While each figure holds its own individual painting, taking a step back reveals the fragments merging into one vast ocean.

열한 명의 첨(CHUM)이 우리를 향해 서 있습니다. 모두 X자 눈을 하고, 각자의 손에는 작은 캔버스를 들고 있고, 캔버스마다 바다의 일부가 그려져 있습니다.

한 명씩 보면 저마다 자기 그림을 들고 있지만 한 걸음 물러서면, 마치 하나의 커다란 바다처럼 보입니다.

This work is a representative painting that illustrates the thematic and technical experiments KAWS explored through a series of works in 2025. The painting originated from a photograph the artist found online, which captured people in an art class proudly holding up and showing off their paintings to one another. KAWS was moved by the act of self-expression and emotional connection through art.

The canvases feature water—symbolizing the flow of emotions and the cycle of life. Water evokes tranquility, yet remains unpredictable and deep. Depending on your perspective, this sea might represent peaceful ripples or a turbulent ocean before a storm.

이 작품은 2025년 카우스가 일련의 시리즈 작업을 통해 몰두했던 주제와 기법 실험을 잘 보여주는 대표적인 회화입니다. 이 시리즈는 작가가 인터넷에서 발견한 한 장의 사진에서 출발했습니다. 미술 수업에 참여한 사람들이 자신이 그린 그림을 들고, 서로에게 자랑스럽게 보여주는 장면이었습니다. 카우스는 그림을 통해 자신을 드러내고, 타인과 감정을 나누는 이 행위에 깊은 인상을 받았습니다.

그래서 첨(CHUM)들이 들고 있는 캔버스에는 감정의 흐름과 삶의 순환을 암시하는 물의 이미지를 그려 넣었습니다. 물은 잔잔한 평온을 떠올리게 하지만, 언제든 흔들리고, 넘치고, 깊이를 알 수 없는 존재이기도 합니다. 보는 이의 관점에 따라 이 바다는 마음의 안정을 주는 물결이 될 수도 있고, 폭풍 전야의 어두운 밤바다가 될 수도 있습니다.

KAWS embeds a painting within a painting. We see the characters and the sea they hold simultaneously, with the fragments uniting to form a whole.

Evoking iconic art historical imagery like Hokusai‘s wave, this sea functions as an emotional landscape rather than grand nature. It mirrors the human mind—seemingly calm, yet susceptible to turbulence at any moment.

카우스는 이 작품 안에 또 하나의 그림을 넣습니다. 우리는 캐릭터들을 보는 동시에, 그들이 들고 있는 바다를 봅니다. 그리고 그 바다의 조각들이 모여 다시 하나의 전체를 이룹니다.

이 바다는 호쿠사이의 파도처럼 익숙한 미술사의 이미지를 떠올리게도 하지만, 여기서는 거대한 자연보다 감정의 풍경에 가깝습니다. 잔잔해 보이다가도 언제든 흔들릴 수 있는 마음의 표면 같습니다.

Exploring his iconic character, CHUM, the works from this period, use splattered paint across the character‘s face, body, and the background adds a rich texture to the canvas. This method evokes the spontaneous gesture of spray paint. Through this unique painting technique, the artist emphasizes a sense of volume and depth within a two-dimensional plane.

카우스의 대표 캐릭터인 ‘첨’을 탐구한 이 시기의 작품들은 캐릭터의 얼굴과 몸, 그리고 배경 전반에 흩뿌려진 물감을 사용하여 캔버스에 풍부한 질감을 더합니다. 이러한 방식은 스프레이 페인트의 즉각적인 제스처를 연상시킵니다. 이 독특한 페인팅 기법을 통해 작가는 2차원 평면 속에서도 입체감과 깊이감을 강조합니다.

KAWS has developed the spontaneous expression of spray paint—a medium he has used since his graffiti days—and painterly brushstrokes into a unified visual language, without distinguishing between the two. While the pronounced outlines in his work are meticulously rendered using a hard-edge technique, dot-like splatters are added to specific areas of the canvas, allowing different textures to coexist.

This dotting technique was reintroduced during his 2021 cereal box collaboration to capture the crispy texture of the cereal. Since then, it has expanded across his recent paintings, imbuing the canvas with rich texture, depth, and volume.

카우스는 그래피티 작업을 하던 시절부터 사용해 온 스프레이 페인트의 즉각적인 표현 방식과 회화적인 붓질을 구분하지 않고 하나의 시각 언어로 발전시켜 왔습니다. 작품 속 윤곽선을 강조하는 하드 에지(hard-edge) 방식으로 정교하게 표현되는 반면, 화면 일부에는 물감을 점처럼 흩뿌린 효과를 더해 서로 다른 회화적 감각을 공존시킵니다.

이러한 점 표현은 2021년 시리얼 박스 협업을 계기로 시리얼의 바삭한 질감을 구현하기 위해 다시 활용되기 시작했으며, 이후 최근 회화 전반으로 확장되어 화면에 풍부한 질감과 깊이감, 입체감을 더하는 중요한 회화적 요소로 자리 잡았습니다.
