Artside Gallery presents 𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘚𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸 𝘍𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘓𝘰𝘸, a solo exhibition by Kwon Sojin, from July 3 to August 8.

폭력적인 시선에 갇힌 #여성 의 신체를 탈환하는 기괴한 반격. 곽지수의 조각은 연약한 파편들을 딛고 마침내 일어선 여성의 새로운 신체다. 작가의 작업은 무겁고 단단한 전통조각의 문법을 정면으로 거스른다. 철사, 전선, 케이블타이 등 스스로 지탱할 힘조차 없는 가벼운 일상의 재료가 뼈대다. 작가는 이 가냘픈 재료를 엮어 금방이라도 주저앉을 듯한 아슬아슬한 형태를 빚어낸다. 위태롭지만 서로를 악착같이 붙들며 버텨내는 앙상한 구조로 여성에게 가해진 #억압 을 드러내고, 도리어 그 취약함을 기워 미소지니(misogyny)에 맞서는 여성의 끈질긴 연대를 형상화했다. 이 뼈대가 저항의 서사를 품고 있다면, 그 위를 덮는 살갗은 시선의 폭력을 되돌려주는 #반격 으로 나아간다.

눈은 이 사람의 것, 이빨은 저 사람의 것, 혀는 또 다른 사람의 것이다. 서로 다른 출처에서 잘려 나온 신체의 파편들이다. 그것들을 하나의 구조 안에 붙여 하나의 몸을 이루게 한다.
작품을 만들면서, 내가 만드는 것이 일종의 더미와도 같다는 생각을 지울 수 없었다. 임시로 조립된 형태, 언제든 해체될 수 있는 취약한 구조. 이 신체들은 파편화된 세상 속에서 혼란스러워하는, 정체성이 분열된 자아를 닮아 있다. 동시에 이들은 타인이기도 하다. 내가 직접 향할 수 없는 대상들, 이름 붙일 수 없는 억압과 감각들을 대신하는 존재들이다._곽지수

The eyes belong to this person, the teeth to that person, and the tongue to yet another. They are fragments of the body, severed from completely different sources. I attach them within a single structure to form one cohesive body.
While creating the work, I could not shake the thought that what I was making was akin to a mere pile. An temporarily assembled form, a vulnerable structure that could be dismantled at any moment. These bodies resemble a fragmented and split self, lost and confused in a fractured world. At the same time, they are the ”other.“ They exist as surrogates for the objects I cannot directly reach, and for the nameless suppressions and sensations._Kwak Jisu

아트사이드 갤러리 전속 작가 조은( )의 개인전 《조은 원화전: 오늘의 정원》이 2026년 7월 17일부터 11월 29일까지 그라운드시소 이스트에서 진행됩니다.

이번 개인전에서는 작가가 발견한 평온하고 무해한 일상의 관계들이 우연히 퍼져 나가는 먹이 천에 스며들듯이 찬찬히 펼쳐질 예정입니다. 제어할 수 없었던 모든 번짐이 모여 만들어내는 가장 견고한 오늘의 정원을, 함께 완성할 아름다운 정원을 즐기시길 바랍니다. 많은 관심 부탁드립니다.

Solo exhibition, Becoming Garden, by artist Jo Eun, represented by Artside Gallery, will be held at Groundseesaw East from July 17 to November 29, 2026.

In this exhibition, the peaceful and harmless everyday relationships discovered by the artist will unfold gently, much like ink naturally spreading and permeating through cloth. We invite you to experience ”Becoming Garden“—a space where uncontrollable bleeds and smudges come together to form the most resilient sanctuary—and to enjoy this beautiful garden that we will complete together.

2002–2004년도는 MMORPG 게임의 부흥기였다. 무수히 현실을 복사해내는 질감의 풍경들이 생성되었고, 그 가운데 내가 마주한 풍경은 ‘샤이닝로어’였다. 이 이야기는 사라진 풍경을 기억하고 느끼며, 그것이 현재라는 시간 속에서 부서진 조각이 되어가는 과정에 관한 이야기다. 그때는 지금 나와 함께하고 있는 데이터 더미가 누구인지를 인식하는 데 긴 시간이 걸렸다. 최소한의 정보 속에서 누군가를 알아가고 이해하는 데 시간이 필요했고, 그렇기에 당장이라도 부서질 것 같은 폴리곤 더미조차 서서히 의미를 갖게 되었다. 지금은 SNS나 눈앞의 누군가가 어떤 존재인지 아는 데 오래 걸리지 않는다. 함께한다는 것조차 점점 우연이 아니라 필연처럼 느껴진다. 현실에서 공동체의 의미와 감각이 점점 사라질수록, 아무런 계산이나 목적 없이 형성되었던 그 공동체를 문뜩 생각나게 한다. 서비스가 종료된 이후에도 이 풍경은 어딘가의 데이터베이스에 빈껍데기를 유지한 채, 이 사건의 주인을 기다리며 남아 있을지도 모른다._권상록

The period between 2002 and 2004 marked the heyday of MMORPGs. Countless landscapes with textures copying reality were generated, and among them, the landscape I encountered was Shining Lore. This story is about remembering and sensing a vanished landscape, and the process of it turning into broken fragments within the time of the present. Back then, it took a long time to recognize who the pile of data currently with me actually was. It required time to get to know and understand someone within minimal information, and for that reason, even a pile of polygons that seemed on the verge of breaking apart gradually came to hold meaning. Today, it does not take long to know what kind of entity someone on social media or right in front of us is. Even being together feels increasingly like an inevitability rather than a coincidence. As the meaning and sense of community gradually disappear from reality, it suddenly brings to mind that community which was formed without any calculation or purpose. Even after the service has ended, this landscape might still remain somewhere in a database, maintaining its empty shell while waiting for the owner of this event._Kwon Sangrok

곽지수는 중심부가 텅 비어버린 그의 조각은 홀로 설 수 없는 것들을 연대를 통해 얽혀 함께 중력에 저항하는 것으로부터 출발한다. 그리고 이 위로 미디어에서 오려낸 익명의 신체 이미지들을 부착한다. 이때 작가는 이미지를 붙이기 전 그것을 물리적으로 움켜쥐고 구겨버리는데, 이 행위는 평면의 데이터를 입체의 물질로 변환시키며 실재를 감각하는 과정이 된다. 이 과정에서 작가는 창조하기 위해 파괴하고 결합하기 위해 분리하는 타나토스(Thanatos)적 면모를 보인다. 잘려 나온 신체의 파편들을 구조 안에 붙여 하나의 몸을 완성하는 일은 분열된 자아를 통합하려는 작가의 시도와 닮아있다. 어릴 적 해외 체류 경험을 통해 타인의 시선 속에서 정체성의 혼란을 겪었던 작가는, 귀국 후에도 지속된 이 갈증이 외부 조건이 아닌 내적이고 세분화된 층위에 있음을 깨달았기 때문이다. 이를 해소하기 위해 작가는 더 이상 원본이 중요해지지 않은 시대에 떠도는 이미지들을 취사선택하여 통제하는 방식을 선택한다.

Kwak Ji-su’s sculptures, which at first glance appear as a single mass, are far from traditional modeling (adding to a core) or carving (subtracting from a mass). Her sculptures, with their hollow centers, begin by resisting gravity through the solidarity of things that cannot stand alone. Upon this structure, she attaches anonymous body images cut from media. Before attaching them, she physically grasps and crumples the images—a process of transforming flat data into three-dimensional matter and sensing reality. In this process, the artist exhibits a ”Thanatos-like“ aspect, destroying to create and separating to combine. The act of completing a single body by attaching severed fragments to a structure mirrors the artist‘s attempt to integrate a fragmented self. Having experienced identity confusion through the eyes of others during her childhood abroad, she realized that this thirst, which persisted after her return, resided not in external conditions but in internal, subdivided layers. To resolve this, she chooses to ”control“ drifting images in an era where the original is no longer paramount.
