[TRACE]

그림에 드러나는 형상 같은 것 들은 수많은 레이어의 추상 과정을 지나 나오는 형상이라 다소 형상답지 못하다. 어떤 그림은 형상을 그리고 어떤 그림은 우연히 그 형상이 드러난다. 의지로 하는 것과 레이어를 통해 우연으로 만들어지는 차이가 바로 형상과 추상의 중요한 차이이다.
The forms that appear in my paintings are the result of countless layers of abstraction, often resisting clear recognition as fixed forms. In some works, forms are intentionally rendered; in others, they emerge unexpectedly through the process itself. For me, the tension between deliberate intention and accidental emergence marks a fundamental distinction between figuration and abstraction.

공간과 사물에 대한 사유를 통해 회화를 작업한다. 특정한 공간 안에 놓인 사물들은 단순한 물건이 아니라, 각기 다른 시간과 기억, 사용의 흔적을 지닌 존재들이다. 나는 이러한 사물들이 놓인 장소와 그것을 사용하는 사람들 사이의 관계를 관찰하며, 공간·사물·인물 사이에 형성되는 복합적인 층위를 회화로 탐구한다.
I create paintings through an exploration of space and objects. The objects placed within a particular space are not merely things, but entities that carry different layers of time, memory, and traces of use. By observing the relationships between these objects, the spaces they inhabit, and the people who use them, I explore through painting the complex layers formed among space, object, and figure.

두 작가의 작업은 서로 다른 공간과 방법론에서 출발하지만, 결국 ‘시간과 흔적을 화면 위에 축적함으로써 회화의 견고함을 획득한다’는 본질적인 지점에서 깊이 맞닿아 있다. 최모민이 사적인 방이라는 한정된 공간 안에서 사물과 인간의 은유적인 행위성을 포착하고, 그리고 덮고 해체하는 반복을 통해 삶의 흔적을 드러낸다면, 이호인은 이전의 이미지를 지우고 덮는 축적의 과정을 통해 구상과 추상의 경계 위에 서 있는 풍경의 밀도를 구축한다.
The works of the two artists originate from different spaces and methodologies, yet they ultimately converge at an essential point: both attain the solidity of painting through the accumulation of time and traces upon the canvas. While Momin Choi captures the metaphorical agency of objects and human presence within the confined space of a private room—revealing traces of life through repeated acts of painting, covering, and deconstructing— Hoin Lee constructs the density of landscapes suspended between figuration and abstraction through a layered process of erasing and overlaying previous images.

[TRACE]

회화적으로는 이미지나 기호의 재현보다 물감과 화면이 지닌 물질적 속성에 더 큰 관심을 둔다. 유화 물감의 색, 여러 번 덧입힌 붓질, 투명한 층들이 겹쳐지며 최종적으로 표면에 드러나는 깊이와 밀도를 중요하게 생각한다. 정교한 묘사나 완결된 형태보다, 붓질의 호흡과 속도, 스며듦과 흘러내림, 물감과 기름이 만나 응고되는 시간 자체가 화면 안에서 살아나기를 바란다.
From a painterly perspective, I am more interested in the material properties of paint and the pictorial surface than in the representation of images or symbols. The colors of oil paint, repeated layers of brushstrokes, and translucent veils accumulate over time, creating the depth and density that ultimately emerge on the surface. Rather than pursuing meticulous depiction or fully resolved forms, I seek to bring to life the rhythm and velocity of brushwork, the processes of absorption and dripping, and the very passage of time through which paint and oil meet, settle, and solidify within the painting.

의도되지 않은 흔적 위로 또렷한 조형적 의지가 더해지면서, 우연과 필연이 교차하는 깊은 층위가 형성된다. 이호인에게 중요한 것은 화면 전체를 관통하는 일관된 자세이다. 밑바닥의 흔적을 과감히 지워내며 획득한 조형성은 각각의 화면을 쉽게 흔들리지 않는 견고함으로 지탱하며, 오랜 시간 단단한 시각 언어를 추구해 온 작가의 태도를 드러낸다.
As a distinct formal intention is layered over unintended traces, a profound pictorial depth emerges where chance and necessity intersect. For Lee Ho-in, what matters most is a consistent attitude that permeates the entire surface of the painting. The formal structure attained through the bold erasure of underlying marks lends each work a sense of stability and resilience, revealing the artist’s enduring commitment to cultivating a rigorous and unwavering visual language over time.

[TRACE]

그의 화면 속 방은 단순한 고립의 공간이 아니다. 습도가 감도는 방 안에는 끊임없이 무언가를 찾고 도모하려는 은유적 행위들이 미세하게 진동한다. 여기서 인물의 정체성은 중요하지 않다. 인물은 분위기와 행위성을 환기시키는 매개에 가깝고, 화면의 중심에는 방 안을 채우는 사물들과 그것들이 만들어내는 파편적 서사가 자리한다. 최근 최모민의 회화는 대상의 재현보다는 그리고 덮고, 다시 해체하는 반복의 과정 속에서 화면 위에 다층의 시간을 축적해 나간다.
The rooms depicted in his paintings are not merely spaces of isolation. Within these humidity-laden interiors, subtle vibrations of metaphorical actions persist—gestures that suggest an ongoing search, a desire to discover, and an impulse to create. Here, the identity of the figure is of little importance. Rather, the figure functions as a mediator that evokes atmosphere and agency, while the true focus of the composition lies in the objects inhabiting the room and the fragmentary narratives they generate.
In his recent works, Choi Momin places less emphasis on the representation of subjects themselves than on the repetitive processes of painting, covering, and dismantling. Through these acts, he accumulates multiple layers of time upon the surface, allowing the painting to emerge as a sedimentation of experience and memory.

그의 회화는 이전 작업이 남아 있는 화면을 새로운 캔버스로 간주하고 다시 덮고 지워나가는 방식으로 이루어진다. 조형성을 찾아가는 과정 속에서 일부 조형적 파편을 남겨둔 채 그 위에 분할된 색면으로 새로운 풍경을 구축해 나간다. 캔버스 아래에 남겨진 과거의 흔적들은 오랜 시간 축적된 풍경의 감각과 결합하며, ‘풍경 같지 않은 풍경’이라는 미묘한 접점을 만들어낸다.
His paintings begin by treating a canvas that still bears traces of previous works as a new surface. He repeatedly covers, erases, and reconstructs the image, allowing the process itself to guide the search for form. Leaving behind fragments of earlier compositions, he builds new landscapes through divided planes of color layered over them. The remnants embedded beneath the surface merge with accumulated sensations of landscape gathered over time, creating a subtle point of intersection—what might be described as a “landscape that does not quite resemble a landscape.”

최모민에게 방과 생활 공간은 인간의 내면과 태도가 가장 솔직하게 드러나는 장소이자, 삶의 리듬이 스며든 풍경이다. 최근 그의 시선은 인물 자체보다 인물이 머무는 ‘방 안의 풍경’으로 깊숙이 향한다. 방 안에 머무는 시간이 길어지며 시작된 이러한 탐색은 현대 사회 속 은둔에 대한 문제의식이자, 작가 자신의 자화상이면서 동시에 실제 작업실 풍경에 대한 기록이기도 하다.
For Momin Choi, rooms and living spaces are places where one's inner self and way of being are revealed most honestly, landscapes imbued with the rhythms of everyday life. In recent years, his focus has shifted from the figures themselves to the “interior landscapes” they inhabit. This exploration began as the time spent indoors grew longer, evolving into a reflection on the phenomenon of withdrawal and isolation in contemporary society. At once, it serves as a self-portrait of the artist and a record of the actual spaces of his studio and daily surroundings.
