nook gallery는 평창동에 위치한 전시공간입니다.
규칙과 틀에 얽매이지 않는 유연함 속에서 현대 미술의 여러 장르를 아우르는 전시를 만들어 갑니다. 성격이 다르면서도 공감대를 가질 수 있는 평면작품과 입체작품이 한 공간에서 만나는 2인 전시를 통해 서로 다른 이미지가 상생할 수 있는 실험적인 전시를 기획합니다. 일 년에 한 두 번은 꾸준히 작업을 해왔으나 전시 기회가 상대적으로 적은 역량 있는 작가를 위한 후원전시를 가집니다.
작가가 전시를 만드는 것이 아니라 관람자가 작품 속에서 자신의 이야기를 풀어갈 수 있는 전시공간을 만들어 가려 합니다.

은 매년 9월에 열리는 누크갤러리의 기획 전시이다. 전시 제목 ‘회화의 이름’은 움베르토 에코의 소설 을 참고해서 지어졌다. 소설 말미에 언급된 한 구절은 “지난날의 장미는 이제 그 이름뿐, 우리에게 남은 것은 그 덧없는 이름 뿐.” “회화 또한 덧없이 남아있는 이름 뿐일까?” 라는 질문을 던지며 누크갤러리는 본 전시를 회화 작가 2인전으로 이어간다. 올해는 서동욱, 안경수작가의 2인전으로 두작가의 작품을 통해 ‘회화란 무엇인가?’ 의 질문을 던지며 사색과 탐색을 이끌어내려 한다.

A phrase mentioned at the end of the novel is “Yesterday's rose endures in its name, we hold empty names.” Posting a question, “Do paintings also hold empty names?,” nook gallery continues these two-person exhibitions.
Artists of this year are Suh Dongwook and An Gyungsu, whose distinct artistic practices invite viewers to reconsider the enduring question, "What is painting?" Through their works, the exhibition encourages contemplation and exploration of the nature and possibilities of painting itself.

안경수작가는 교외의 여러 지역을 오가며 도시와 도시 사이 변두리의 풍경에 주목합니다. 다양한 장소에 거주하며 장소 특정적 풍경 및 현상에 주목하고, 그것을 그린 그림 자체를 하나의 새로운 층위로 규정함으로써 풍경과 맞닿기를 시도합니다. 작가는 풍경의 부산물을 좇으며 체화한 감각을 회화의 언어로 변환합니다.
nook gallery recently visited the studio of artist An Gyungsu, whose exhibition will be on view from August 28 to September 23.
An Gyungsu traverses various suburban regions, turning his attention to the peripheral landscapes that lie between cities. Living and working across different locations, he observes site-specific landscapes and phenomena, defining the paintings themselves as a new layer through which to engage with the landscape. Following the traces and byproducts of these environments, he transforms embodied sensory experiences into the language of painting.

서동욱작가는 장면을 연출하여 사진을 촬영하고 그 장면을 그림으로 옮기는 작업방식을 통해 인물의 단면을 포착하여 회화의 본질을 탐구하고 있습니다.
nook gallery recently visited the studio of artist Suh Dongwook, whose exhibition will be on view from August 28 to September 23.
Suh Dongwook explores the essence of painting through a process in which he first stages and photographs a scene, then translates the image into painting. By reconstructing photographic scenes on canvas, he captures fragments of human presence and investigates the relationship between representation, perception, and the nature of painting.

나점수의 작업은 경험 이전의 감각에서 시작된다. 말이 되기 전 몸이 먼저 알아차린 것들, 의식이 닿기 전에 이미 내부에 흔적처럼 새겨진 것들. 작가는 그것들이 일어나는 순간을 붙잡기보다, 오히려 그 움직임을 이끌어 간다. 그의 작업은 어떤 근원적 자리로 향한다. 그것은 설명되기 이전의 감각이자 선험(先驗)의 자리다. 아직 형태가 없고 이름도 없지만 분명히 존재하는 그 침묵의 영역으로 작가는 스스로를 밀어 넣으며, 낯선 소리가 생으로 깨어나는 순간을 기다린다.
Na JeomSoo's work begins with a form of perception that precedes experience itself—those things the body senses before they become language, those impressions already inscribed within us before they reach consciousness. Rather than attempting to capture the instant they arise, the artist follows and guides their movement. His practice moves toward an originary ground: a realm of a priori perception. It is a silent domain that exists before form and before name, yet is undeniably present. By placing himself within this unnamed territory, the artist waits for the moment when an unfamiliar resonance awakens into living presence.

〈無名 - 향(向)〉

작업은 길거리 가로수에서 베어져 나온 나무를 오랫동안 관찰한 기억에서 시작되었다. 죽은 나무에서 순이 돋아나는 모습은 생명력이 단순히 생사로 구분되지 않음을 보여주었다. 조각적 개입이 시작되면서 나무는 새로운 형태를 얻고, 내부를 파고드는 과정은 정서적 깊이와 어둠을 드러낸다. 작업 중 탈각된 파편들은 버려지지 않고 작업장 주변에 쌓여 또 다른 시간을 만든다. 그 위로 돋아난 강아지풀 줄기는 부채가 되어 다시 작업 안으로 들어온다. 원래 시작했던 자리를 천천히 부채질하는 이 부채는 작업 중 위로받는 시원한 바람, 작업장 근처 은사시나무가 바람에 흔들리던 정서적인 느낌을 은연중에 꺼내놓는다. 사물과 자연물의 경계는 이 지점에서 흐려진다.
The work began with a memory of observing trees that had been cut down from roadside avenues over a long period of time. The sight of new shoots emerging from dead trunks revealed that vitality cannot be simply divided into life and death. As sculptural intervention begins, the tree acquires a new form, while the act of carving into its interior uncovers emotional depth and darkness.
The fragments that fall away during the process are not discarded but accumulate around the studio, giving rise to another passage of time. From among them, foxtail grass grows, its stalks transformed into a fan that reenters the work. Slowly fanning the very place where everything began, this fan quietly evokes the cool breeze that offered comfort during the making of the work, as well as the emotional memory of the trembling aspens near the studio. At this point, the boundary between the man-made object and the natural world begins to dissolve.

새롭게 선보이는 프로토타입 작업은 조각가가 할 수 있는 가장 표면에 근접하는 방식이다. 깊이의 공간이라기보다는 아주 미묘한 간격 사이에 어떤 정서를 놔두는 시도이다. 거칠게 다듬어진 표면 위에 색이 층층이 쌓이고, 레이어 하나가 하나를 겹치는 방식은 새벽에서 아침으로 넘어가는 순간처럼 그 간격을 느끼는 정서적인 틈과 닮아있다.
The newly introduced prototype works represent the closest approach to the surface that sculpture can take. Rather than creating a space of depth, they attempt to place emotion within the subtlest of intervals. Layers of color accumulate across roughly finished surfaces, each layer gently overlapping the next, evoking the emotional gap between dawn and morning—a fleeting transition perceived through delicate shifts. -Narratives in Na Jeom Soo's Work

조각은 형태만을 좇거나, 반대로 개념과 담론에만 몰두할 때 삶의 생기와 일상의 이야기를 놓치기 쉽다. 이번 전시는 이러한 거대 담론에서 벗어나, 자연과의 관계 속에서 스며 나오는 시적 사물과 그 안에 깃든 이야기에 주목한다. 붙잡을 수 없고 인식하지 못한 채 지나가지만 분명히 존재하는 사건과 현상들, 그리고 그 안으로 깊이 들어가는 일은 이번 작업의 중요한 출발점이 된다.
Sculpture can easily lose the vitality of lived experience and the stories of everyday life when it pursues form alone, or conversely, when it becomes absorbed solely in concepts and discourse. This exhibition steps away from such overarching narratives to focus instead on the poetic objects that quietly emerge through our relationship with nature and the stories they hold. Fleeting events and phenomena—those that undeniably exist yet often pass unnoticed or beyond our grasp—and the act of entering deeply into them form the essential point of departure for this body of work.
