We are pleased to announce our participation in 𝑆𝑢𝑚𝑚𝑒𝑟 𝑆𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑘𝑠 𝐼𝐼: 𝐼𝑔𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑒, hosted by Frieze House Seoul, presenting the works of Seoul Kim. Bringing together three painting series that the artist has sequentially developed over the past decade, this project highlights his sincere attitude and deep contemplation as he continuously explores the imperative to paint and the physical conditions of this classical medium. The exhibition runs from June 18 to July 1, with an opening reception on June 19 from 6 to 8 pm. We look forward to seeing you there!

한남동 일대 갤러리들이 함께하는 새로운 공동 프로그램, ‘한남 새터데이즈(Hannam Saturdays)’가 이번 주 토요일에 첫선을 보입니다. 이는 한남동에 자리한 갤러리들이 같은 날 각자의 전시와 프로그램을 선보이는 지역 기반 이벤트입니다. 하루 동안 도슨트 투어, 작가와의 만남, 네트워킹 등이 진행되며, 참여 갤러리 12곳의 행사 일정에 맞춰 자유롭게 방문하실 수 있습니다.

디스위켄드룸은 구나 구나 GuNa 작가와 함께하는 전시 도슨트를 13일 오후 3시부터 진행합니다. 모두 한남동에서 만나요!

“Hannam Saturdays” is a new seasonal initiative bringing together galleries across Hannam on this Saturday. For this inaugural edition, 12 galleries will simultaneously activate their current exhibitions through special programs, talks, tours, artist encounters, and other exhibition activations. Throughout the day, you can freely explore the 12 participating galleries according to their event schedules.

As part of this event, ThisWeekendRoom will hold an exhibition docent tour with GuNa 구나 GuNa on the 13th at 3 pm. See you all in Hannam-dong!

한편, 조각에 주로 쓰이는 FRP는 본래 공업용 재료로 사용에 알맞은 온도나 배합률이 필요하다. 그에서 벗어날 경우 덩어리의 두께와 색 등에 변수가 일고, 경화되는 순간 예기치 않은 불순물이 섞이기 쉽다. 그러나 작가는 이를 집요하게 다듬기보다 우연이 자아낸 실마리를 긍정하며 다음 단계로 나아간다. 이러한 태도는 그의 회화에서도 드러난다. 우선 제목에 공통으로 등장하는 ‘수레’는 사람이나 짐을 싣고 굴러가는 운송 수단이자 맨눈으로 관찰할 수 없는 내면과 장기의 보호막을 뜻한다. 수레, 즉 나무판의 속을 파내는 순서에서 생겨나는 요철은 종종 그대로 남겨지는데, 이 예측 불가능한 지점들의 수용이 곧 무작위적인 방임을 의미하는 것은 아니다. 소란한 궤적 아래엔 이미 단단한 몸체가 자리하고 있기 때문이다. 비정형조차도 하나의 고유한 원형이기에 구나는 그 안에서 발견되는 제각각의 모양을 용기 있게 엮어 나간다.

FRP (fiber reinforced plastic), commonly used in her sculptures, was originally developed as an industrial material and requires specific temperatures and mixing ratios for proper use. Deviating from these conditions leads to variations in thickness and color, while unexpected impurities can easily become embedded during the curing process. However, rather than meticulously refining these unintended results, the artist embraces the clues produced by chance and moves forward with them. This attitude is equally reflected in her paintings. The recurring word “Wagon” in the titles refers both to a vehicle that carries people or objects and to a protective shell surrounding the invisible interior of the body and mind. The uneven surfaces created in the process of hollowing out the wooden panel are often left as they are. Yet accepting these unpredictable moments does not imply arbitrary abandon, for beneath the restless traces lies an already solid structure. Believing that even irregular forms possess their own inherent archetype, the artist boldly weaves together the disparate shapes discovered within them.

기준이란 사건의 시시비비를 가리고, 사회를 논리적으로 직조하는 보통의 토대이자 지표. 정답과 효율을 요구하는 환경에서 다수는 무의식적으로 곧은 무언가를 정상성으로 합의해 왔다. 하지만 과연 모두에게 주어진 조건은 그토록 매끄럽고 공평한가? 전시 《기울어진 증거들》은 이러한 근원적인 질문에서 출발한다. 각자의 몸과 지각 체계는 저마다의 굴곡을 지닌 채 끊임없이 동요하며, 주변의 존재와 맺는 관계 역시 고정되어 있지 않다. 이에 보편의 정의를 교란하고 이분법적 시선에 균열을 낼 때 비로소 새어 나오는 이야기에 주목한다.

A standard functions as a common framework through which society distinguishes right from wrong and organizes itself. In environments shaped by the demand for clear answers and efficiency, many have unconsciously come to accept straightness as a sign of normality. But are the conditions given to everyone truly so seamless and fair? 𝑊ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝐿𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝐿𝑒𝑎𝑛𝑠 stems from this fundamental question. Each body and perceptual system carries its own contours and fluctuations, while the relationships formed with surrounding beings continuously shift rather than settle into fixed states. The exhibition turns its attention to the narratives that surface when accepted notions of universality are unsettled and the binary gaze begins to fracture.

사방의 위계를 뒤집고 이질적 물성을 충돌시키는 작가의 무대는 의도적으로 조작된 픽션에 다름없다. 개의 얼굴이 그려진 접시에 자전거 체인을 연결하여 얽매임과 도피, 조각난 충성심을 표현하거나(𝘞𝘢𝘴𝘯’𝘵 𝘮𝘦), 넥타이로 결박한 트로피를 거꾸로 매달아 가치의 전복을 암시하고(𝘚𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦), 무너져 내렸으나 온전한 형태를 유지하고 있는 카드 탑의 형상을 빌려 안전한 실패를 보여주고(𝘉𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘧 𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘦), 반사되는 풍경에 따라 무늬를 바꾸는 은빛 오리를 내세워 정체성이 주변 환경을 통해 얼마나 쉽게 굴절되는지 묻기도 한다(𝘘𝘶𝘪𝘦𝘵 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘶𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯). 그의 다초점 렌즈는 현대인의 통찰이 얼마나 취약하고 가변적인지 폭로하는 장치가 된다. 그럴듯해 보이나 어딘가 어긋난 하이브리드 앞에서 우리는 지금 무엇을 보며 어떻게 믿고 해석하는지 자문할 수 있을 것이다.

The artist’s stage, where spatial hierarchies are overturned and conflicting materialities collide, unfolds as a deliberately constructed fiction. A bicycle chain attached to a plate bearing a dog’s face evokes bo***ge, escape, and fractured loyalty (𝘞𝘢𝘴𝘯’𝘵 𝘮𝘦), while a trophy bound with a necktie and suspended upside down suggests the inversion of value (𝘚𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦). Elsewhere, the image of a collapsed yet intact house of cards points toward the notion of a safe failure (𝘉𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘧 𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘦), and a silver duck that shifts its appearance according to the reflected landscape raises questions about how easily identity is refracted through its surroundings (𝘘𝘶𝘪𝘦𝘵 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘶𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯). His multifocal lens serves as a device that exposes the fragility and instability of contemporary perception. Confronted with these plausible yet subtly disjointed hybrids, viewers are prompted to reconsider not only what they see, but also how belief and interpretation themselves are constructed.
