📖 You‘re invited—chaekgeori for Liminal Figures, Berlin
⠀
After Seoul and LA, Liminal Figures celebrates its launch in Berlin. Join us during Berlin Art Week for a relaxed afternoon together—food, drinks, and each other’s company.
⠀
In the Joseon period, chaekgeori marked the completion of a book at village schools (seodang)—a small gathering to give thanks and celebrate together. We‘re marking the completion of Liminal Figures, and of this journey across three cities, in that same spirit. Holding events across these three cities reflects the spirit of the book itself, which brings together artists and practices shaped by movement across languages, borders, and different forms of belonging.
⠀
Liminal Figures brings together interviews with fifteen artists and collectives whose practices unfold across shifting cultural, geographic, and linguistic contexts. Co-published by GYOPO and The Floorplan.
⠀
With Jesse Chun, Johanna Hedva, Skye Jin, Lotus Kang, Cindy Ji Hye Kim, YoungEun Kim, HaeAhn Paul Kwon Kajander, Heesoo Kwon, Hyeok Lee, Jeewi Lee, Maia Ruth Lee, Na Mira, Gala Porras-Kim, TJ Shin in conversation with Summer Kim Lee, Rachel Youn, and coda by Diana SeoHyung.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Liminal Figures book launch .us in Los Angeles last Saturday, and to all of the artists, collaborators, and supporters who made this launch possible. We are also grateful to the participating artists and speakers who generously shared their work, ideas, and perspectives with us throughout the event.🙏
⠀
While the book begins with questions of Koreanness, it also speaks to broader conversations about identity, belonging, and cultural translation. At a time when nationalism and exclusionary politics are becoming increasingly visible across the world, the experiences of diaspora invite us to imagine more open, relational, and plural ways of understanding ourselves and others.
⠀
We experience art because it allows us to see the world through the eyes of artists. By bringing together conversations in the artists’ own voices, Liminal Figures foregrounds artistic practice as a space where questions of place, language, memory, and identity can be articulated with complexity and nuance.
⠀
Thank you again for celebrating this publication with us. We look forward to continuing the conversation at our Berlin book launch this September.

『Liminal Figures』

📖Book Launches📚🎉
⠀
Liminal Figures is an anthology of interviews with fifteen artists and collectives whose practices unfold across shifting cultural, geographic, and linguistic contexts. Moving away from fixed categories, the book examines how artists negotiate in-between conditions actively lived and produced through language, materials, institutions, and everyday experience. Through in-depth conversations, it approaches liminality not as an identity, but as a way of working within the complexities of contemporary art.
⠀
In this spirit, Liminal Figures will be launched across three cities: Seoul, Los Angeles, and Berlin. Beginning in Seoul, continuing in Los Angeles—home to one of the largest diasporic Korean communities—and concluding in Berlin, the book launches reflect the transnational conditions, movements, and multiple forms of belonging that shape the publication itself. We hope you’ll join us at these launch events:

Dear readers,

As a small independent publisher, we are rarely able to produce multiple print runs. We also believe that interview publications are tied to a particular moment in time. For this reason, we do not plan to reprint K-Artists (K with a strikethrough), originally published in 2023.

At the same time, we know many readers remain interested in the publication, particularly because Liminal Figures continues and expands the inquiry first explored in K-Artists, the first English-language anthology of interviews with forty-seven emerging Korean artists.

To ensure ongoing access, we regularly donate our publications to public and research collections.

K-Artists and The Floorplan‘s books can currently be found at:

South Korea
▪️ National Library of Korea, Seoul
▪️ SeMA Art Archives, Seoul
▪️ MMCA Art Archive, Seoul & Gwacheon
▪️ 주한독일문화원, Seoul

Hong Kong
▪️ Asia Art Archive

United Kingdom

United States
▪️ GYOPO, Los Angeles
▪️ Asia Art Archive in America, New York

Germany
▪️ Deutsche Nationalbibliothek, Leipzig & Frankfurt
▪️ , Berlin
▪️ Goethe-Institut, Berlin

Finland
▪️ PUBLICS, Helsinki

In addition, Korean editions of Curating Subjects and Curating and the Educational Turn have been donated to IMMA.

We plan to continue donating remaining copies of our publications to libraries, archives, and research institutions so that they remain accessible to future readers.

Thank you for your continued support.
