Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Liminal Figures book launch .us in Los Angeles last Saturday, and to all of the artists, collaborators, and supporters who made this launch possible. We are also grateful to the participating artists and speakers who generously shared their work, ideas, and perspectives with us throughout the event.🙏

While the book begins with questions of Koreanness, it also speaks to broader conversations about identity, belonging, and cultural translation. At a time when nationalism and exclusionary politics are becoming increasingly visible across the world, the experiences of diaspora invite us to imagine more open, relational, and plural ways of understanding ourselves and others.

We experience art because it allows us to see the world through the eyes of artists. By bringing together conversations in the artists’ own voices, Liminal Figures foregrounds artistic practice as a space where questions of place, language, memory, and identity can be articulated with complexity and nuance.

『Liminal Figures』 출판기념회
참여 작가 및 저자와의 대화: K의 경계와 그 너머

2023년 출간된 젊은 한국 예술가 47인의 영문 인터뷰집 『K-Artists』에 이어, 더플로어플랜이 GYOPO와 공동 출판하는 『Liminal Figures』는 변화하는 문화적·지리적·언어적 맥락 속에서 작업을 전개하는 15명/팀의 한국계 예술가 및 컬렉티브와의 인터뷰를 담은 영문 앤솔로지입니다. 이 책은 1980–90년대에 출생한 동시대 예술가들이 서로 다른 언어와 문화, 국가와 공동체를 가로지르며 형성해온 경계의 감각과 이동의 경험을 어떻게 예술적 실천으로 전환해왔는지 조명합니다.

출판기념회에서는 공동 저자 문지윤, 변현주와 참여 작가 김영은, 이혁, 제시 천이 함께 『Liminal Figures』의 기획 과정과 더불어, 언어와 문화, 소속과 이동 사이의 경험이 어떻게 예술적 실천으로 이어지는지, 그리고 오늘날 동시대 미술에서 ‘경계성(liminality)’이 어떤 의미를 가질 수 있는지에 대해 이야기 나눕니다.

Liminal Figures is an anthology of interviews with fifteen artists and collectives whose practices unfold across shifting cultural, geographic, and linguistic contexts. Moving away from fixed categories, the book examines how artists negotiate in-between conditions actively lived and produced through language, materials, institutions, and everyday experience. Through in-depth conversations, it approaches liminality not as an identity, but as a way of working within the complexities of contemporary art.

In this spirit, Liminal Figures will be launched across three cities: Seoul, Los Angeles, and Berlin. Beginning in Seoul, continuing in Los Angeles—home to one of the largest diasporic Korean communities—and concluding in Berlin, the book launches reflect the transnational conditions, movements, and multiple forms of belonging that shape the publication itself. As a small independent publisher, we are rarely able to produce multiple print runs. We also believe that interview publications are tied to a particular moment in time. For this reason, we do not plan to reprint K-Artists (K with a strikethrough), originally published in 2023.
