MEET THE ARTIST!

Meet Irene de Boer ( ꧁IRENE DE BOER꧂ ) a talented artist with exquisite sense of style.

Irene de Boer (b. 1994, Delfzijl) lives and works in Amsterdam and grew up in the farmlands at the epicentre of the Netherlands’ gas-mining industry. After completing her Master of Arts in Painting at the Frank Mohr Institute in Groningen in 2018, she stayed at CalArts (California Institute of the Arts) and Otis College of Art and Design in the USA. She worked in fault-line and earthquake-prone areas in New Zealand and Japan and collaborated with Medialab Matadero in Madrid on The Metabolic Sublime. Her work has been shown at W139, Amsterdam; S.M.A.K., Ghent; and NP3, Groningen.

Irene de Boer’s practice engages with the intersections of nature, culture, and technology, exploring how organic patterns and synthetic forms influence one another. Through video, sculpture, painting, and text, she investigates processes of transformation and adaptation within natural and artificial environments. Her work creates bridges between traditional media, contemporary techniques, subcultures, pop culture, and street culture. Central to her inquiry is how patterns originating in nature are adopted by culture and, conversely, how cultural constructs are synthesised into artificial versions of nature. Moving from the material to the metaphysical, her work reveals hidden forces at play in ecological systems, bodily processes, and industrial mechanisms. Her practice reflects a particular interest in the physical, historical, and mythical dimensions of the natural world, especially crystals and other elemental materials.

The ongoing project Min[d]ing Crystals extends this investigation into the role of materials as mediators between the body, technology, and environment. Her work forms a continuous dialogue between scientific and aesthetic inquiry, seeking to unveil unseen connections that shape our understanding of the world. Through playful yet critical exploration, she creates works that evoke both nostalgia and optimism, inviting reflection on how we navigate and reshape an increasingly synthetic world.

MODEL LIFE DRAWING SESSION!

Looking is different from seeing. Looking at things is easy, but seeing is harder. We can easily look at a model and know that it’s a model. But seeing means understanding the model’s body, knowing where the muscles are, how the body is rotated, where the shadows and lights are, the proportions and relationships of parts of the body, the angle at which the head is tilted etc. By seeing, we can draw with more detail.

These sessions are open and beneficial to all levels artists.

What: Figure Life Drawing
When: October 4th 3pm
Fee: 25 000 won

MEET THE ARTIST!

Meet Donald Cameron ( Donald Cameron ) a big artist straight from The Big Apple!

Donald’s paintings are motivated by two fundamental interests: specifically the potential of visual texture, and more generally an idea called the ‘postdigital’.

Donald explores the meeting points between the digital, the mechanical and the handmade in visual texture. Whether in paint, print, or some hybrid form, he is drawn to the tactile presence of surfaces and how they can influence the read of an image.

In Busan Donald looked to the city’s layered identity as a port city. As a place where mountains meet LED skylines and sea light reflects off glass towers, it has plenty of overlapping surfaces - natural and artificial, human and industrial. Donald was particularly interested in how Busan expresses digital modernity and cultural memory differently from the residence locations where he had previously worked.
