We’re excited to share the first artist interview video for 𝘌𝘯 𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘯𝘵.
Lee Bae is known for working with charcoal as his primary medium, bringing together the tradition of East Asian ink painting and a contemporary visual language to explore themes of existence, memory, and origin. At the entrance of Museum SAN’s main building stands 〈Issu du feu (From Fire)〉, a monumental sculpture measuring 8 meters high and weighing 7 tons. For the artist, who has spent more than 40 years working around the world, this exhibition was also a chance to reconnect with his roots.
The title 𝘌𝘯 𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘯𝘵 is about more than simply waiting. It speaks to moving forward while holding on to hope, even when things remain unfinished. Like the long process of charcoal becoming charcoal, the title also reflects the year of preparation that went into bringing this exhibition to life.

《En attendant: 기다리며》의 아티스트 인터뷰 첫번째 영상을 공개합니다.
이배 작가는 숯을 주재료로 동양의 수묵 전통과 현대적 조형 언어를 결합하며, 존재와 근원에 대한 질문을 이어온 작가입니다. 뮤지엄 SAN 본관 입구에는 높이 8미터, 무게 7톤의 대형 조각 〈불로부터(Issu du feu)〉가 우뚝 서있습니다. 40년간 해외를 오가며 작업해 온 작가에게 이번 전시는 자신의 근원을 다시 마주하는 시간이기도 했습니다.
전시 제목 《En attendant: 기다리며》는 단순한 기다림이 아닌, 완결되지 않은 상태에서도 염원을 품고 나아가는 시간을 의미합니다. 숯이 만들어지는 긴 탄화의 과정처럼, 이배 작가 스스로 전시를 준비하며 보낸 시간이 고스란히 담긴 제목이기도 합니다.
