INDIGO MAPS
Step02 Storytelling by Carlo Santoro

On the first edition of Angkor International Festival of the Arts, Metaestetica Lab, a laboratory of artistic experimentation founded by Italian professor Carlo Santoro presented a mix-media installation exploring a collective re-appropriation of the natural Indigo and Gamboge dyes.

The exhibition featured a series of abstract geometric compositions, called maps, made from fabrics collected in various regions of Asia over the last ten years. The pretext was to tell the story of the journey that led to the discovery of the textiles; a journey among natural dye producers in remote Chinese villages, between the provinces of Guizhou and Gueiyan, as well as Siem Reap and Phnom Penh in Cambodia.

A path full of anecdotes surrounds each work bringing the narratorโ€™s words to the readerโ€™s imagination. The maps acted as a stimulus to encourage the observers in telling their personal side of the story. This concept of participatory art implies a process in continuous evolution in which subjects engage in a system of open relationships, alternating the moment of subjective contribution with that of collective elaboration, adhering to shared "cognitive constructions."

The next edition of the Angkor International Festival of the Arts promises a progressive line-up of local and international artists bringing outstanding works from around the globe.

Captivating audiences from the world over, Phare, The Cambodian Circus, uniquely brings together theatre, music, dance and acrobatics in every show-stopping performance. More than just a circus, the artists of Phare tell riveting and inspiring stories of Cambodian origins.

Considered as one of the countryโ€™s most innovative social enterprise and a model for sustainable tourism, profits generated through performances support the education and training of more than 1,000 students at Phare Ponleu Selpak in Battambang.

Inspired by iconic Khmer patterns, the โ€˜Thread Seriesโ€™ by Battambang-born artist Pen Robit attempts to represent Cambodiaโ€™s past, present and future through figurative and abstract expressions.

A graduate of Phare Ponleu Selpak School of Visual and Applied Arts, Pen Robit draws inspiration for his subjects from the cultural iconography of Cambodia. He has been featured as an international artist-in-residence for exchanges in Australia, Canada, France and around Southeast Asia including the OzAsia Festival in Adeleide, Peninsula Austronesia International Art and Culture Exchange in Taiwan and Richard Koh Fine Art Exhibition in Malaysia.

This year, Angkor International Festival of the Arts continues to be a global stage for both emerging and established artists to showcases their creative expressions.

One of Cambodiaโ€™s most beloved art forms, Sbek Thom แžŸแŸ’แž”แŸ‚แž€แž’แŸ† known as the Khmer shadow puppet theatre reenacts stories from the Reamker, the Cambodian adaptation of the Hindu epic Ramayana. Dating from before the Angkorian period, the shadow theatre has evolved beyond a sacred ritual to become an artistic expression.

The puppets used in the drama are made from a single piece of leather, dyed with extracts sourced from the bark of the Kandaol tree. Khmer artisans draw and cut intricate figures on the tanned hide based on the characters of the Reamker. The shadows of the puppetโ€™s silhouettes projected onto the screen are brought to life with precise and specific dance steps accompanied by an orchestra and narrators. Considered a significant living tradition, it was proclaimed by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2005.

Intangible cultural heritage is more fragile and more susceptible to fade from existence in our modern world. It is through this motivation and the desire to safeguard cultural treasures that the Angkor International Festival of the Arts organized the first Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Day to preserve and celebrate Cambodia's cultural legacies.
