Final panel complete and that marks the end of all major events for the Art of Mind art exhibition! With our partners from Sombok Psychology represented by Dr. Liz Schilpzand, KCPS Cambodia by Mr. Hoeur Sethul, and EMDR Cambodia by Mr. Om Plaktin.
Topic was “What are the barriers to therapy, and how can we overcome them?” Once more this topic is relevant to modern day society because Cambodians of all ages are still reluctant to seek professional help despite having been through so much. This can be our elders and parents surviving the genocide, civil war, and stagnation period, or us young people being reluctant to ask for help even though we seriously need it due to fear of being vulnerable, not knowing who to ask for help, financial reasons and more.
Finally, we encourage you all to show kindness and empathy. We are all trying to survive in this world and it will be greatly appreciated if you can lend a hand to someone, even by just actively listening to them. If you’re facing any problems regarding your mental health or emotions, we encourage you to seek professional help because they will show no judgement, they will listen, and try to understand you and provide you with the necessary help for you to recover.

Another successful panel for the Art of Mind art exhibition at Meta House with our partners from Sunrise Mental Health Clinic represented by psychiatrist Dr. Thary Lor, Sneha Center by CEO and psychologist, Mrs. Sotheary, and a prominent genocide scholar and director of AUPP CSEAS, dr. Theresa de Langis.
The topic was “How did the genocide affect us and how can we heal?”
This is a relevant and important topic because as we’re all aware, Cambodia went through 3 years, 8 months, 20 days and 8 hours of terror by the Khmer Rouge (1975-1979). Many Cambodians are still suffering from the effects of what happened 50 years ago by the way our elders, parents, teachers, and colleagues behave, the way they’ve raised us and how they’ve coped.

Once more, we encourage you all to show kindness and empathy to the survivors and the generations that came after. Be understanding and, and as suggested by dr. Theresa, please be sure to document or record their stories so that their tales may live on and the next generations can understand what had happened all those years ago. We also encourage you to seek professional help if your family members or peers or colleagues are suffering from a mental disorder, be it from the genocide or other things. Your mental health matters as much as your physical health.

A successful first panel with our partners from Sombok Psychology represented by Managing Director, dr. Liz Schilpzand, Education Administrator from Invictus Internetional School, Mr. Marko Delic, TPO Cambodia represented by Project Coordinator, Mrs. Phaneth Sor, and La Casita Tango Social Club represented by founder, Ms. Nina Malli.
The topic was “PTSD, how it affects a person and their surroundings.”
This is an important and relevant topic because according to research by the National Institute of Health (NIH), over 50% of Cambodians suffer from PTSD. This of course was caused by the civil war, US bombings, subsequent genocide, and the decades of economic stagnation.

We encourage you all to please show kindness to those who’re suffering from mental disorders or just with their problems in general. The very purpose of this panel is to spread awareness and understanding so that any misconceptions will be erased and hopefully end the stigma surrounding this topic sooner as well as encouraging people to seek help from professionals.
