The Mighty Diamonds
Biography
The Mighty Diamonds are one of the most respected vocal trios in roots reggae history, formed in 1969 in Trenchtown, Kingston, they're known for their sweet harmonies, Rastafarian-influenced lyrics, and smooth choreography.
The group consisted of Donald “Tabby” Shaw, Lloyd “Judge” Ferguson, and Fitzroy “Bunny” Simpson, heavily influenced by 1960s Motown vocal groups and Jamaican rocksteady artists like John Holt.
Their harmony style became a defining sound of the 1970s roots reggae era, blending spiritual themes, social commentary, and smooth vocal arrangements.
The classic Mighty Diamonds style is 'roots reggae', in their case characterised by close harmony lyrics, Tabby's relatively high-pitched lead vocals, and earnest, 'conscious' lyrical content.
The trio began recording in the late 1960s, but their real breakthrough came in the mid-1970s working with legendary producer Joseph Hoo Kim at Channel One Studio.
Their 1976 album 'Right Time' which featured powerful tracks like
"Right Time,""I Need a Roof,"and "Have Mercy," became a roots reggae classic.
The album is widely considered one of the most important roots reggae albums ever recorded.
The Mighty Diamonds are known for Smooth three-part vocal harmony Strong Rastafari messages, singing songs about suffering, justice, faith, and African consciousness, deep roots rhythms from Jamaica’s golden era.
Known for "conscious" lyrics, their hits include "Tamarind Farm," "Country Living" and "Hey Girl" which were recorded and released by the Channel One label.
Two of their greatest songs are "Go Seek Your Rights" and "I Need A Roof" both from the mid 1970s.
"Pass the Kouchie", which was written by Ferguson and Simpson, composed by Leroy Sibbles and Jackie Mittoo, became an international hit twice, when first released {on their 1982 album "Changes"} and again when it was covered by Musical Youth with the lyrics altered to remove the herb references, and released as "Pass the Dutchie" {1982}.
Their performance at Reggae Sunsplash in 1982 was released on an album later that year, paired with the performance from Mutabaruka.
Their music stood alongside other great harmony groups like The Abyssinians, Israel Vibration, and Culture.
The group continued to release albums regularly, adapting successfully to the prevailing digital rhythms of the 1980s and beyond.
They recorded dozens of albums and remained active for decades, moving through roots reggae, lovers rock, and dancehall eras while keeping their identity.
Their music influenced many artists, and they performed around the world spreading conscious reggae alongside legends like Burning Spear and Bob Marley.
The Mighty Diamonds represent the pure harmony tradition of Jamaican roots reggae—voices carrying messages of struggle, faith, and liberation.
Together they have about forty-five studio albums under their belt and produced countless hit songs during their musical career.
In 2021, the group was honoured with the Order of Distinction {Officer Class} in the National Honours and Awards, on the occasion of Jamaica's 59th Anniversary of Independence.
The group's career effectively ended in 2022 following the deaths of two members.
On 29 March 2022, Donald “Tabby” Shaw was shot dead, along with one other person, on McKinley Crescent in St Andrew, Kingston, Jamaica. Three others were injured in the shooting.
The following Friday, 1 April, co-singer with the group, Fitzroy "Bunny" Simpson after a long battle with diabetes died whilst in an undisclosed Kingston hospital.
{May 10, 1951 - April 1, 2022}
Lloyd "Judge" Ferguson is the sole surviving member of the original trio.
Their songs still echo through sound systems, reggae festivals, and vinyl collections across the world.
