Attire Before Ordination

Before Apostolic Ordination, the bishop-elect is dressed primarily as a priest:
• A white chasuble (the outer liturgical vestment worn during Mass).
• A white alb underneath.
• An episcopal cross (pectoral cross) hanging from a cord around his neck.
• A distinctive magenta/pink headpiece, reflecting the color traditionally associated with bishops.
• The vestments are simple and dignified, emphasizing that he has not yet received all the insignia of the episcopal office.
At this stage, he is being formally presented to the assembly and the principal consecrator before the ordination rite proceeds.

After the Ordination

Once the Rite of Ordination is completed, several significant symbols of the episcopal office are bestowed upon the newly ordained bishop:

1. The Ring – symbolizing his fidelity and spiritual bond with the Church.
2. The Mitre – the bishop's liturgical headdress, signifying his role as teacher and shepherd.
3. The Crosier (Pastoral Staff) – symbolizing his pastoral authority and responsibility for the flock entrusted to him.
4. The Episcopal Chair (Cathedra) – if he is taking possession of a diocese, he is led to the bishop's chair as a sign of his authority.
