This is the Lorian Swamp.
One of the largest and most important wetlands in Kenya, yet very few people know about it.
Hidden deep in the dry landscapes of northern Kenya, stretching across parts of Isiolo and Wajir counties near Merti, the Lorian Swamp exists like a miracle of life in the middle of harsh arid land.
This vast wetland forms at the end of the Ewaso Ng’iro North River, one of Kenya’s most important rivers. The river begins its journey from the forests and highlands of Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Ranges before flowing north into the dry lowlands.
But instead of reaching the Indian Ocean, the river slows down upon entering the flat northern plains and spreads into a massive inland delta, creating the Lorian Swamp.
At its largest extent during wet seasons, this wetland can cover nearly 3,000 square kilometres, stretching for about 196 kilometres long and up to 25 kilometres wide. Despite its enormous size, it remains one of Kenya’s least known geographical wonders.
The swamp lies in one of the hottest and driest regions of the country. Rainfall here is low and unpredictable, while evaporation rates are extremely high. During droughts, large parts of the swamp shrink dramatically, sometimes leaving only small permanent wetlands behind.
And yet, life continues to depend on it.
The waters of the swamp slowly seep underground and help recharge the Merti Aquifer, one of the most important underground freshwater reserves in northern Kenya. Millions of people and livestock indirectly rely on this hidden water system for survival.
Despite being surrounded by dry land, the swamp supports a surprisingly rich ecosystem. Thick reeds, aquatic plants and dense bush provide shelter to elephants, lions, crocodiles, hippos and countless other animals. More than 200 bird species have also been recorded here, including migratory birds that travel thousands of kilometres across continents before stopping at this wetland.
