Today, I turn 69! 🎊
Kenya turns 63 this year. And like me, she is not retired, she is experienced.
I was six when Kenya became independent, old enough to remember the excitement, but young enough not to understand its enormity. It is remarkable how closely my life has travelled alongside the life of this country.
We have both grown older and changed. We have known promise and disappointment, courage and renewal.
And somewhere along the way, I learnt not to ask for space, but to step into it. I stepped into public life when the rooms were largely occupied by men. I defended a Constitution I believed was worth protecting. When BBI sought to alter it, I challenged it rather than simply accept the direction the country was being taken.
In 2022, Raila Odinga chose me as his running mate, a historic first that brought hope to many.
But perhaps the title that has given me the deepest perspective is Grandmother.
When I first ran for President, my granddaughter was a baby. Today, she is a young teenager.
And that is how quietly time moves. You look at the people you love and begin to wonder what kind of country you are leaving for them.
Perhaps that is what 69 gives you: perspective.
You realise that the work of a lifetime is not one grand moment, but a series of choices, what you stand for, what you risk, and whether you still show up when it is difficult.
At 69, I know the work is unfinished. And I look at Kenya my country, my home, the country I have grown up alongside and I know there is still so much worth fighting for.
I am still here. Still believing in what Kenya can become. And once again, I am offering myself to serve her as President!
