PERIOD FILMS PIERCING STIGMA

Four films. Four filmmakers. One conversation about breaking the silence surrounding menstruation through storytelling.

On February 21, filmmakers representing four films addressing period stigma came together during the Gender Justice Summit at Oakwood School in Hollywood, Los Angeles, for a special panel discussion organized by The Pad Project and the Oakwood School Student Ambassadors.

It was a rare gathering. While menstruation is a universal experience for billions of people, relatively few films have chosen to explore the stigma, shame and social barriers surrounding it. Bringing filmmakers from four such films into the same room created a unique opportunity to explore how different stories, genres and perspectives can open up conversations about a subject that is still too often left unspoken.

THE PANEL

🎬 Melissa Berton
-Period. End of Sentence. β€” Academy Award winner for Best Documentary Short Film
-Long Line of Ladies
🎬 Julia Aks & Steve Pinder
-Jane Austen's Period Drama β€” Academy Award nominee for Best Live Action Short Film
🎬 Rico Herre
-Impure β€” German-Kenyan feature film

Together, these films approach the subject from different perspectives and genres - from documentary to narrative, drama to comedy, and short-form to feature-length - while sharing a common purpose: to bring menstruation out of the shadows and into the conversation.

The panel also offered an opportunity for filmmakers and students to exchange ideas about storytelling, representation, menstrual health, education and the potential of cinema to create awareness and inspire dialogue.

Because stigma thrives in silence.

And sometimes, a film can be the beginning of a conversation.

For a girl living in a vulnerable community, a simple sanitary pad can mean the difference between staying in school and missing lessons, between hiding in shame and participating with confidence.

We are committed to ending period shame, menstrual poverty and stigma by putting menstrual products, knowledge and dignity within reach

Whether it is one pack, one box, or a financial contribution, your support can help a girl face her period with dignity and confidence.
Your donation is more than a pad.

It is education. It is dignity. It is hope. It is a future.
