Penzi Choir is a music project with children and youngsters in the Korokocho slums in Niarobi, Kenya. Initiated by Fiora Beuger and Stephen Owino in collaboration with Nafsi Africa and Tarumbeta Africah.
“Penzi’ is a Swahili word meaning love. The word titled in one of the original compositions pilot songs influencing the value, expressing and insighting a general word for Love. (religious, family, romantic, material and mutual etc.)
With this project we want to work on empowering youth, working on confidence, use the strength of music: bring people together, expressing emotions, individual strengthening and feel the power of singing with a group.
Using music and theater to empower the youngsters and children from and within the slums and ghetto. The project aim is to use music as a tool to bring the youths from different backgrounds (tribal, religious, age, gender, social and cultural) together. Through the process involving them in empowerment and life social skills.
