Cyprian's work is deeply shaped by observation; of landscapes, objects, architecture, music, literature, and the changing environments around him. Reeds growing near the river where he spent time as a child have become a recurring visual motif, alongside references drawn from craft traditions, domestic spaces, fashion, design, and classical painting. He is particularly interested in how details, textures, and patterns come together..

Ephemerals

Ephemerals is a body of work that meditates on rejuvenation, decay, and the in-between, recognising the fragility of these moments.

It is a deeper appreciation of life, beauty, and the present, while discouraging unhealthy attachments to an unchangeable past. Perhaps this is what is most disturbing about time: everything, to some degree, has an expiry date, leading to a future that quickly disappears, a fleeting present, and an unreal past. These are things I may never understand, though perhaps they are also among the most futile to grasp. Yet these fleeting moments are what shape experience. They are the building blocks of memory, the colours and textures that paint reality. Every laugh, fear, joy, and sorrow is a brief spark, gone tomorrow. Yet within that ephemerality there is profound grace, an invitation to cherish, to love, and to embrace. There is solace, too, in the knowledge we gather, as we search for some sense of steadiness within this raw wilderness.

To fully experience this exhibition, viewers are invited to look past the deceptively smooth, dreamlike surfaces of the works and observe the complex, paradoxical mechanics of their creation. While these pieces possess the striking, raw appearance of tactile, torn archival collages, they are entirely constructed from pure paint. Teklehaimanot pulls off a staggering feat of visual deception, utilizing highly sophisticated masking, precise line-work, and hyper-refined airbrush textures to paint the illusion of a collage. This deliberate technical choice serves as the primary metaphorical engine of the show. By meticulously painting these simulated rips, rough edges, and overlapping historical fragments, the artist mirrors the psychological state of survival under pressure: The Soft, Airbrushed Gradients mimic the fading of memory, the passage of time or the ghostly, persistent resilience of the human spirit. The Painted Visual Fractures simulate historical ruptures and state violence, showing how trauma forces a person to reconstruct their identity from shattered pieces. What appears to be a physical tearing of paper is actually a masterful application of pigment, proving that the “scars” on these figures are woven into the very fabric of their being.
