Why is electricity so expensive in Kenya? The answer starts long before electricity reaches your meter.

From the cost of generation and the structure of the power system to transmission, distribution and other charges along the electricity supply chain, several factors shape the price consumers ultimately pay.

We look at where the cost of electricity really comes from — and why bringing down the final bill is more complicated than simply reducing the price of power generation.

When Kenyan households and businesses complain about the cost of electricity, attention naturally turns to the monthly bill.

🏟️ Talanta Sports City is almost built. But will Kenya make the investment count?

The 60,000-seat Raila Odinga International Stadium is approaching completion, with the Talanta Sports Complex now reported at more than 92% complete.

But the bigger engineering and economic question begins after the contractors leave.

At roughly KSh45.8 billion for the stadium contract, alongside billions more for roads, rail and supporting infrastructure, Talanta will need to do more than host AFCON 2027.

Can it become a year-round venue for football, rugby, concerts, international competitions, conferences and commercial events?

Can its transport infrastructure serve Nairobi even when the stadium is empty?

And perhaps most importantly, can Kenya establish the maintenance and commercial model needed to keep a technically sophisticated national asset working for decades?

We look beyond the roof, stands and spectacular architecture to examine the engineering, cost, transport, financing, maintenance and long-term economic case for Talanta Sports City.

☀️ What happens when your rooftop solar system produces more electricity than you are using?

The excess power doesn't simply disappear.

Under Kenya's net metering framework, electricity generated by a customer-owned solar system can be exported to the grid, with the exported energy accounted for against electricity consumed from the grid.

But there are important rules around how much can be exported, how the energy is credited, metering requirements and what happens to excess generation.

For anyone with rooftop solar — or considering installing it — understanding these rules is important.

We explain how Kenya's net metering system works and what solar customers need to know before sending power back to the grid.

A 700,000-bpd refinery is a very large bet on East Africa's petroleum market.

Kenya's domestic market alone cannot justify a refinery of this scale. At 700,000 barrels per day, the proposed Lamu refinery would need to operate as a regional and potentially international petroleum-processing hub.

But where will the crude come from?

Kenya's Lokichar Basin will eventually contribute, Uganda's crude is tied to the EACOP route to Tanga, South Sudan's production remains constrained by export infrastructure, while the DRC's current output is relatively small.

And then there is the other side of the equation: where will the refined products go?

We look beyond the headline 700,000 barrels per day to examine the crude supply, regional competition, market size, Lamu's strategic location and the infrastructure that will determine whether the project can work commercially.

When Aliko Dangote's proposed oil refinery in Lamu breaks ground, Kenya will be taking a very large bet on East Africa's petroleum industry.

A water-storage structure, a flood-control work, a conveyance system, a drainage network and an irrigated field are not separate outcomes.
