In A Nut Shell

2010-2014

'Mitumba 'deals with the issue of mobility, transformation and culture in the course of globalization. The project was initiated by a Kenyan group known as Tuchangamke. About 10 international artists are expected to light up CBD with artistic performances this October. Their theatrical performances and musical aura will set the town ablaze into the effects of buying seco

nd-hand fashion. At the international level, mobility affects artistic development and creation. How do we produce art within the creative tension of international platforms and exchange projects with people constantly on the move? Artists from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Germany, Spain and France, the USA and Taiwan have gathered and analyzed a variety of issues through performances they give as part of a collective, long-term production process. Background

The developemnt of the projects is led by Tuchangemke group, from Nairobi a local CBO and company Mouvoir, from koln germany.

2016-2017, brought the two entities together again,in partnership with NFPMA (Nairobi festival of performance and media arts) and Goethe institut-Nairobi, in developing the second departure point from MITUMBA, to now JITTA project. Concept

JITTA project attempts to bring together, fashion designers, choreographers/dancers, Dj's, musicians, and poets, from Europe and east Africa. To create a collective of artists, working together in a research-residency creation (May, 9th to 21st,), to eventually building a collective collage/mash up of a performance in the context of a deconstructed catwalk to be performed/showcased in Nairobi street,in November,4th,2017. With JITTA, our aim is not only to show respect for differences that exist between the cultures and dispel supposed dichotomies. Moreover, we want to build a new relationship and awareness for issues. This includes our constantly examining and repeatedly redefining the form of collaboration for which we have opted. With regard to the complex subject of cultural appropriation, we aim to focus on the area of fashion/clothing: in terms of its function as an object of self-presentation and how it shapes identities, and, with this in mind, examine, expand and deconstruct the form that is the catwalk. We will incorporate contemporary and traditional African dance forms/styles as well as urban dance elements, as these forge a link to the catwalk, and liaise directly and very musically with beat/rhythm on multiple levels and allow appropriation mechanisms to materialize with the help of hip-hop styles. The choreographies evolve in close correlation with live music. Participating artists
from kenya,uganda,france,germany and belgium
