EDI'S MUSE

We dedicate today's posts to the spectacularly gifted Edi Seymour.

Q1. Who are you?
I am Edi Seymour, a Kenyan singer- songwriter, producer, all- round instrumentalist. I play the guitar, drums and the keyboard, and I love music. I feel like I'm lucky that music chose to use me, you know?

Q2. What is Music to you?
Music is the force, the energy... It's God. The way God said 'I Am', music is. I feel like it is the language that I use to pass on what I believe in.

Q4. Where do you hope music will have taken you in the next few years, or how do you hope or see it benefitting you as a wholesome individual?
I would love to tour. I used to do a bit of photography so I’d probably pick it up again if I was moving around a lot.
That aside, at the very least I’d like to make a reasonable living from it – financial independence sounds nice.
At the most I’d like to create a more enabling environment for African creatives, make the industry a more viable place and thus easier for them to make a living from.

Q5. In your opinion and experience, what do you think music should be to people?
I don’t know if should police how people consume music, I think about how I felt when people have different interpretations of my songs. I’ve always thought it was pretty cool, the differing perspectives.

Q3. How has your journey in music been thus far?
There have been a lot ups and down but the most standout thing would be growth. Whenever I compare who I am now and who I was when I started I get shook.
I'd say it's interesting in terms of the fact that there are quite a few times where I felt like stopping music. I've had a lot of change of heart. Initially I was very big on the idea of collaboration, because community over competition really helps with growth.

But I've also learnt that my work flow does differ quite strongly from most of the artists I've met so I've found it very difficult to work with people.
But the upside to that is that I've forced myself to learn things I probably wouldn't have been that interested in. I mean, I've done live loopings, which is pretty cool.
I've performed live when I've done solo work. It's really covered the spectrum.
I've had to do predominately song-writing, production, I started singing, I started rapping. Occasionally I do a little bit of spoken word. I really feel like I've been all over the place and I've had a lot of fun with it.

RUMBI'S MUSE

We dedicate today's posts to the masterly Rumbi.

Q1. Who are you?
My name is Michael Rumbi.
I am an occasional rapper (more and more of late), sometimes singer and everyday creative. I’ve been involved in music ever since I was young but was very inconsistent with it.
I started taking it a lot more seriously when I founded Rozzi@Work in 2016 and branched into solo work after I moved to South Africa. There I brought together my instrumental and song-writing abilities, eventually adding production.
Outside of music, I’m currently studying – wrapping up my undergrad. I also help out my artist friends with some their music admin.

Q2. What is Music to you?
Music is something that conveys emotion, and that’s probably why I fell in love with it, first as a listener and eventually as a creator.
The ability to share how I feel, or evoke something from within has always amazed me. I make music that’s meant to be felt.

Q5. In your opinion and experience, what do you think music should be to people?
I'm not going to put myself in a position where I dictate what music should be to them. Like I said, it's a very highly personal thing. I think we should allow music to be whatever it means to each individual person.
But I will say that all the things listed that could potentially be things to people are really good things. So, music is all of the above and more.

Q3. How has your journey in music been thus far?
My journey in music do far has been a treacherous one. I see my journey as sort of this epic kind of pilgrimage, kind of like Lord of the Rings. And I think that's such an accurate or rather appropriate analogy because music is such a marathon, it's such a long term thing. At least if you're planning on making a living from it.
My journey has been frustrating. A lot of my journey had been me sort of feeling that I should be much further along than I am. A lot of the journey has been wondering why more people are yet to interact with my music, but I choose to take it in stride, just do what I love and hope for more growth as I move along.

Q4. Where do you hope music will have taken you in the next few years, or how do you hope or see it benefitting you as a wholesome individual?
I'd just like to achieve greatest impact. In a few years I'd like to be playing for an audience of 10,000 people plus, and I've been making very deliberate steps to achieve that goal.

TETU'S MUSE

We dedicate today's posts to the brilliant Tetu Shani.

Q1. Who are you?
I am Tetu Shani, a Kenyan performing artist, singer- songwriter, Self- taught percussionist and guitarist. I have had the honor of featuring in the Global Music Awards 2017, CNN African Voices and Best Live Band Sondeka Awards 2018.
More importantly, I am a son, brother, husband, father and friend.

Q2. What is Music to you?
Music, to me, is many things. Though my music can be defined as Urban Folk, I personally don't think music was ever meant to be one thing. It's self expression. It's the way that I challenge myself. Music is healing. Music is very, very catered to the individual. Music is universal - every culture and people has a form of music.

Hello, good people. :)

We hope you're keeping warm and safe during these interesting days.
Within the course of the next few weeks, we will launch a segment where we celebrate artists who we have had the pleasure of working with, and some who we hope to work with in future.

The segment will be titled 'Muse Sessions' because of the fact that music as an artform requires inspiration to fuel it. Each artist is uniquely different, and we would like to share with you each musician's form of inspiration and outlook on music, from a personal perspective.

We hope to give each of you a chance to know the gifted artists behind their equally splendid hits, and reaffirm the fact that good music, and good musicians, are still very much present among us.

We hope you'll love it!

As always, please Like! Follow! Subscribe, and Stay Tuned!
