WARNING TO THE THREE COUNTIES OF DUK, TWIC EAST AND BOR ⚠️
If this emerging situation is not addressed, particularly where young people are being permitted to use and promote so-called “black magic” as a means of becoming bulletproof, serious consequences could follow across the three counties.
Also If this culture of glorifying and treating such individuals as heroes is not discouraged, it could undermine our longstanding values, destroy our social fabric, and cause us to lose the respect we have earned in the eyes of other South Sudanese. Among the possible consequences are:
1. Senseless killings and cattle raiding will continue.
2. Intercommunal conflicts will escalate.
3. Conflicts between sections will increase.
4. Revenge killings may target innocent people in towns and villages.
5. Death and violence could become a normal part of daily life.
6. Churches and other community institutions could gradually lose their influence and presence.
7. The three counties could become increasingly anarchy, with these harmful practices becoming normalized. This would make people afraid to live there and could discourage investors from investing in these areas of Bor, Twic East and Duk.
8. Robbery could become widespread, with individuals claiming to be “bulletproof” taking the property and cattle of those who do not possess such protection, while chiefs and community leaders remain silent.
These are the dangers that could lie ahead if the situation is not addressed now.
For these reasons, there is an urgent need for all leaders, members of the clergy, traditional leaders, and intellectuals to intervene collectively before the situation gets out of control. If we remain silent, even those who speak against these practices could eventually become targets of violence.
The people of Lakes State are still dealing with the consequences of allowing some young people to indulge in practices involving the purchase and use of so-called Damazin and Darfur magic as “bulletproof” protection. I believe we should learn from the experiences of our neighbours rather than wait until the same problems reach our communities.
This is not about condemning our young people, but protecting their lives, preserving our communities, upholding the rule of law, and finally preventing violence from becoming normalized.
Let us act before it is too late.
