Ijapa and the Stolen Bananas

From Tales from the Great Forest

The sun was hot above the Great Forest, and the rivers had shrunk into muddy streams. The mango trees were bare, and the yams had all been eaten. Every animal was hungry—except the monkeys.

The monkeys, clever climbers with sticky fingers, had gathered bananas from the tallest trees and hidden them in a cave high on Banana Hill. They posted guards—young monkeys with sharp eyes and loud voices—to protect their treasure.

Deep in the forest, under a shady iroko tree, sat Ijapa the Tortoise. His shell was dusty, and his stomach growled like thunder.

“I cannot eat bark,” he muttered, eyeing a tree root. “Even worms would laugh at me.”

Just then, Ehoro the Hare bounded past, as fast and light as wind.

“Ehoro!” Ijapa called. “Where are you running to in this heat?”

“To the banana cave, old shell,” Ehoro said with a smirk. “But don’t worry, they’ll never let you in. You’re too slow to climb and too slow to sneak.”

Ijapa narrowed his eyes. “We’ll see.”

That night, Ijapa went to Banana Hill and watched from the shadows. He saw the monkey guards dancing around the entrance, picking fleas and tossing banana peels.

He returned to his hut and began to plan.

The Next Morning

Ijapa covered his shell in bright cloth and tied a red feather around his head. Then he dipped his voice in honey and walked to Banana Hill like a chief.

“Make way! Make way!” he shouted. “I come from the king—Ajaku the Lion! I bring a message of peace and respect to the Monkey Clan!”

The monkeys stopped. “From the king?” one said nervously. “What does he want?”

“He asks for only three bananas as a royal tribute. If you agree, the king will declare you his favorite clan!”

The monkeys whispered. The youngest one asked, “Only three?”

Ijapa smiled. “Just three—for now. But... if the king receives more, he might send you mangoes from his private orchard.”

The monkeys cheered and filled a bag with bananas. Ijapa bowed deeply and w
