According to a 1963 publication by R. C. Rainey of the British Museum of Natural History Anti-Locust Research Centre, an air reconnaissance registered 50 swarms of desert locusts that invaded Kenya in 1954.

They covered a total area of approximately 1,000km2 and rose to 1,000-1,500m above ground, with the largest swarm covering 200 km2, approximately 10 billion locusts.
