Project CIRCE: Participatory Mapping and Decolonial Walk in Ancona, Italy
As part of the ongoing Project CIRCE initiative, we engaged in a participatory mapping exercise and decolonial walk through the historic city of Ancona, Italy. This experience created a reflective space to critically explore the city’s layered histories, uncover overlooked narratives, and challenge dominant perspectives embedded within urban spaces.
Through collective dialogue and embodied exploration, participants reimagined the relationship between place, memory, and identity highlighting the importance of inclusive storytelling and decolonial approaches in shaping more equitable cultural landscapes.

During this week, we actively participated in the international conference titled “Afro-descendant Narratives and Plural Identity Trajectories: Languages, Educational Paths, Artivism, and Citizenship in a Decolonial Perspective,” held at University of Macerata chaired by Prof Rossita Deluigi.
The conference convened a diverse and interdisciplinary cohort of scholars, cultural practitioners, artists, and activists representing over fifteen countries. Multilingual paper presentations spanning disciplines such as linguistics, philosophy, pedagogy, literature, history, and broader academic research fostered robust public engagement and critical scholarly dialogue.
The three day conference culminated in an open art workshop focused on the co-design of a visual trajectory addressing the representation of Afro-descendant identities within Western painting traditions.

This week, the Africa Nomads Art Space team participates in AFRO-DESCENDANT NARRATIVES AND PLURAL IDENTITY TRAJECTORIES international conference hosted by University of Macerata, Italy.
From April 15–17, we join scholars, artists, and cultural practitioners in exploring critical conversations around language, education, artivism, and citizenship through a decolonial lens. This gathering creates space to reflect on the richness and complexity of Afro-descendant identities while amplifying voices that shape global cultural narratives.
Our participation aligns closely with the vision of the CIRCE Project fostering intercultural dialogue, creative exchange, and transformative storytelling across borders.
We look forward to engaging, learning, and contributing to conversations that reimagine identity, belonging, and the future of cultural expression.

We warmly invite you to experience the Wahenga wa Sanaa exhibition at the National Art Gallery of Kenya, located within the National Museums of Kenya.
This remarkable exhibition brings together works by distinguished veteran artists whose contributions have shaped Kenya’s artistic landscape. We are especially proud to see our own Leonard Kateete featured among the artists on showcase.
We encourage our community, partners, and art enthusiasts to visit, engage with the works, and celebrate the rich legacy and continued evolution of Kenyan art.

Genres Installation by Sally Atieno
Showing in the Unmapped Futures at Akala Art Gallery

The work revisits African histories of slavery, colonization and forced separation through the visual language of outdated media. VHS tapes, once tools for recording and preserving memory, become symbolic archives of fragmented histories. By arranging these cassettes as an installation, ‘Genres’ suggests that African narratives were recorded, edited and often distorted by colonial powers. The piece invites viewers to question who documents history and whose stories are preserved. Ultimately, it reflects on memory, identity and the ongoing process of reclaiming African historical narratives.
