What happens when artists come together to imagine how art can bring a community together, create dialogue, and inspire regeneration?
We are excited to host the second preliminary ART(ONEMENT) Festival Artist Workshop: a creative space where artists will come together to explore ideas, exchange perspectives, and develop the conceptual and structural direction of the festival’s community sculptural installation.
This workshop marks the beginning of a collective artistic journey; one that brings together ART + COMMUNITY + REGENERATION.

(ART)ONEMENT Festival —The Process Begins

Today, we held the preliminary artists’ workshop for the (ART)ONEMENT Festival, bringing together artists to explore ideas, exchange perspectives and begin shaping the festival’s collective sculptural installation.
The workshop laid the foundation for the design, structure and meaning of the installation, while also informing the curation of the festival’s wider programme and community activities.
This is more than creating an artwork. It is about bringing people together through art, dialogue, reflection and collective making.
The journey towards (ART)ONEMENT has begun.

What happens when a community doesn’t just experience art, but makes it together?
(ART)ONEMENT is a participatory art festival bringing artists, creatives and the wider community together to build a large scale communal sculpture from discarded and reclaimed materials. Inspired by communal traditions of gathering, storytelling, harvest, dance and reconciliation across Africa, the festival explores art as a space for atonement, connection and collective renewal.
Artists, makers, storytellers, musicians, dancers and community members are invited to contribute their ideas, hands, stories and imagination to the evolving installation.

On Friday we hosted Milele, A performance show curated by and at the Africa Nomads Art Space where they got to showcase their artistic work which they use to express their life stories from childhood memories to the present growing up in Congo and the human atrocities happening back in DRC. A Story of Reunion. Resilience. Revolution.
Africa Nomads Art Space is proud to host MILELE, a compelling live performance organized and presented by our Artists in Residence, JKM Rambo (rapper) and Yves Nonstop (dancer).
Separated for 15 years by insecurity in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, these childhood friends have found each other again in Mombasa. Through their residency at Africa Nomads Art Space in partnership with At Risk, they have transformed their shared experiences into a powerful artistic collaboration that speaks to memory, loss, resilience and hope.
MILELE is more than a performance it is an immersive journey through music, dance and storytelling. It gives voice to the lived experiences of the people of Goma, turning pain into poetry, movement into resistance and reunion into a celebration of the enduring human spirit.
Join us for an unforgettable evening as these two resident artists premiere a work born from friendship, survival and creative expression.

🎊PROJECT CIRCE IS NOW ACTIVE AT AFRICA NOMADS ART SPACE!

Project CIRCE is a collaborative European and African initiative that explores Controversial Cultural Heritage (CCH)~the monuments, artworks, traditions, historical sites and collective memories that often evoke different interpretations due to histories of colonialism, conflict, migration, inequality, and social change. Rather than avoiding these difficult histories, CIRCE creates spaces where they can be explored through artistic practice, critical dialogue and inclusive community participation.

Our Project CIRCE Local Activation brought together artists, cultural practitioners and the community for an evening of art, dialogue, and reflection around “Controversial Heritage: Memory, Identity & the Power of Storytelling.”

Through Project “CIRCE”, Africa Nomads Art Space will continue to foster critical conversations, artistic exchange, and community engagement around controversial cultural heritage and the role of art in preserving, questioning and reimagining our collective histories.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended, our incredible panelists, artists, partners and volunteers who made this activation possible. Your presence and contributions have set the tone for a powerful and impactful program ahead.

Join us this Friday from 5:30pm for our Project “CIRCE Local Research Activation
During the panel session we bring together a distinguished panel of cultural practitioners, researchers, educators, and community leaders to explore the theme of “Controversial Heritage: Memory, Identity and the Power of Storytelling.”
Join us as we examine how heritage shapes our collective memory, influences identity and challenges us to engage with difficult histories through dialogue, research and storytelling.

Meet the Panelists:
🔹 Linda Shuma: Mentor, Transformational Agent & Community Builder, Ubuntu Lab Institute
A passionate advocate for community led transformation and inclusive dialogue, Linda brings valuable insights on social memory, identity, and collective healing.
🔹 Rafael Abdulmajid: Head of Education, Fort Jesus Museum
With extensive experience in heritage education and preservation, Rafael will share perspectives on safeguarding cultural histories and engaging communities with contested heritage.
🔹 Dr. Wanyenda Chilimo: University Librarian, Technical University of Mombasa
A scholar , a researcher and information specialist whose work focuses on knowledge preservation, archives, and the role of institutions in shaping historical narratives.
🔹 Leonard Kateete: Veteran Artist & Cultural Historian
An accomplished artist and cultural historian whose practice explores memory, identity and the preservation of cultural knowledge through artistic expression.
🎤 Moderated by Sally Atieno: Curator, Associate Researcher, and Cultural Practitioner
Leading the local activation and exhibition experience.
