Before she was the queen of rumba, Thérèse Kishila Ngoyi, known to the world as Faya Tess, was on track to become an engineer. But music had a different destiny in store for her.

In 1986, she made the bold choice to leave engineering behind and join Lord Tabu Ley Rochereau’s legendary Afrisa International. Over the next decade, her velvet voice and unforgettable presence made her an absolute pillar of the group.

After ten iconic years with Afrisa, she launched her solo career in 2000 with the album Keba (meaning "be careful, I'm coming"). Blending a rich variety of styles she had mastered over the years, the project earned her the title of Best Singer in Central Africa. With a beautiful voice and a gentle gaze that captivates audiences everywhere, she rightfully earned her nickname "The Freshwater Mermaid."🧜‍♀️

Today, she stands as one of the most celebrated Rhumba and soukous singers from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. As one of the rare female voices whose echo has crossed international borders, she has recorded alongside legends like Tabu Ley Rochereau, M'bilia Bel, Le Grand Kallé, and Franco.🔥
