🌊 Set along the quiet edge of Sagami Bay in coastal Japan, Hayama Artist Residency ( Hayama Artist Residency ) offers artists a month of living and working in a coastal town where ocean light, slow mornings, and daily rhythms shape the creative process. Just outside Tokyo, Hayama feels both grounded and open ~ a place to listen, observe, and make work in conversation with land and culture.

Currently open for applications, this four-week residency welcomes artists working across all mediums. The program offers time, space, and support to reflect, research, and create ~ with accommodation in Hayama, return airfare, and a living stipend included.

Designed for artists drawn to place-based practice and gentle immersion, Hayama invites a slowing down, a chance to recalibrate, connect, and let the environment quietly lead the work.

🌿 Apply by September 30, 2026 for the June 1–30, 2027 residency - open internationally. More + applications at hayamaresidency.com.

❤️Repost from ・・・🇯🇵🌳 In the heart of Tokyo, there is 70 hectare forest located on the site of the Meiji shrine. This human made forest was created 100 years ago as a project with a 150-year vision. It was planted with the cooperation of about 110,000 volunteers, who planted 100,000 trees of 365 different indigenous species donated by people around the nation.
The forest was created under the guidance of Dr Seirkou Honda, who we learnt recently was a mentor of Akira Miyawaki.

The Meiji Jingu forest is still moving through growth transitional stages. In around 60 years time the forest should settle to be entirely evergreen broad-leaved trees such as oak, chinquapin and camphor.
The rules for managing the forest are pleasing to read and consist of “Do not pluck any leaves or branches etc from the forest.” “Do not walk in the forest and do not bring anything out of the forest - even a dead leaf !”

✨ Artist Highlight: “Diego Alberti and Frédéric Liver on Japan, Making, and What Stays With You.” In 2025, French artist Frédéric Liver and Argentine artist Diego Alberti both spent time at the Hayama Artist Residency. One works with bodies, water, collaboration, and film; the other with machines, sound, and precision. What follows is a poetic conversation between Hayama Artist Residency Founder, Dexter Wimberly and the artists.

What was your first impression when you arrived in Japan?

Frédéric: I arrived in spring. Tokyo first, then Hayama, a little later. I wasn’t ready. Tokyo is big. Lost. I understood nothing. Hayama, the sea, Mount Fuji hidden. I looked for solutions, one day at a time. Buying film, finding a restaurant. I went to a Keiji Haino concert the day after I arrived. I saw a snake on the way back from the shops. These gestures became my way of settling in. Through presence. Through perseverance, in its quietest form. Attention to small things.

Diego: In Japan, everything is carefully thought out, executed, and designed with a purpose. Something that caught my attention is that even the simplest things look extremely well done when viewed from the train. In my work, I always try not to leave anything to chance. Understanding how the Japanese approach their work, no matter what it is, is truly inspiring. In Japan, everything just clicks.
