Every year in May, wisteria bloom on the mountainside right next to the workshop. Their beauty became inspiration for this handpainted tea bowl.

If you like more simple designs, Nanban Mishima is the style for you.

This series pays an ode to the natural colors of the base soil for pottery. Main features are black glaze on a dark base and a style called “Nanban Mishima”, decorations using handmade stamps and white clay. Both styles have a rustic appeal with colors slowly changing over time.

A perfect example of "Nanban Mishima". Nanban means “unglazed pottery” and Mishima refers to the technique of inlaying colors in ceramics. Mr. Murakami took great care in placing his lines and filling them with the right amount of color.

An appealing white swirl in our sakura bowls represents the gale that creates 花吹雪(hanafubuki), a storm of falling cherry blossoms.

This enormous kiln is built by the ceramics community on Sumiyama and all local craftsmen work together to light it with wood and charcoal during the baking season. Fukuikugama bakes their ceramics in the traditional manner, resulting in limited stock every year.

"Born in a mountain village in Kyoto called Miyamacho where I grew up freely and surrounded by nature. I often thought that when I graduated High School, I would leave the countryside and live by myself. My plans changed when I discovered the universal beauty of ceramics. I especially liked Korean white porcelain.

I’ve been working with ceramics for nearly 45 years now. When I look back, I don’t think I was overly fixated on anything. All my works have been made with the feeling I had at the time, influenced by various factors in life such as my approach to aesthetics or my technical skill.

For me, what I create in the moment is the best work I can imagine."

Hydrangeas are in season right now in Japan.
This tea bowl is a perfect representation of the rainy season. For use during tea ceremony or as a decorative piece.
Handcrafted and handpainted in Uji, Kyoto.

This beautiful purple blend is a skill passed down from master to pupil. Currently only Mr. Murakami from Fukuikugama knows how to make this enchanting color.
