So, I noticed that the outsides of many buildings in Japan’s cities resemble the insides of bathrooms: the walls are covered by thousands of tiny, shiny ceramic tiles.

Turns out, this is not just a cool aesthetic choice, but a practical solution to two problems that plague Japanese cities: earthquakes and harsh climate.

Earthquakes render brick buildings mostly unusable. So, that leaves you a choice of two other building materials: wood and concrete. Wood is too expensive to mantain and doesn't allow much tolerance to build upward. So you're left with concrete.

Which is awesome because concrete trade is subsidized by the Japanese government. However, raw concrete has a disadvantage: it is not well suited for Japan’s humid climate. The rainy season and the extreme heat of the late summer quickly erode raw concrete.

The Japanese realized that the conditions outside in the rainy months resemble closely those inside a used bathroom. And what best protects the bathroom walls from erosion? Ceramic tiles! The tiles protect concrete from the dampness and the concrete protects inhabitants from earthquakes.

I spoke about this idea a couple of years back. Feeling like I was so close to figuring it all out. How all of the pieces were slowly coming together. This vision for my art and my life becoming so clear. But then I stopped. I let life get in the way. I made excuses. I got lazy.

Then, I searched. Outwards. For somewhere. For someone. Constantly looking. For the right place, the right person....the right moment. For acceptance, confirmation and, worst of all, for permission.

There was no need to search. It's been here. Within me. I give myself permission. I am unbound. And this time, I will not stop.

The first time I put this up I was a little bit under the enfluence and very excited to share so sorry about the repost. I kind of messed up my feed. 😬

The vibes were so chill on this photo walk, but somehow, me being me, I managed to capture so many moody shots. Really into the heavy contrast from the midday sunlight. And if you noticed, no ones eyes are completely visable. Mysterious. 🙃
