【 I bought Kumade at Tori no ichi 】
Tori no Ichi is a traditional Japanese festival held in November at various shrines and temples that are associated with good fortune and business prosperity. I visit this festival to pray for success in the coming year.
At the festival, the most iconic item is the kumade, which is a decorative bamboo rake. I buy a kumade as a lucky charm. The idea is that a rake can “gather” or “pull in” good fortune, money, and opportunities. The decorations often include symbols of prosperity such as gold coins, rice bales, cranes, and masks of gods of good luck.
Many shop owners and business people go to Tori no Ichi every year to replace their kumade with a slightly larger one, wishing for continued growth.
