ATLAS LAB Masterclass with BLOW UP PRESS

ATLAS LAB

OPEN CALL
ATLAS LAB Masterclass with BLOW UP PRESS
“When the Story Becomes a Book”

FIVE PRACTICES AS A PROJECT BECOMES A BOOK

Our previous post posed three questions:

What is the project trying to communicate?
Why does it need to take the form of a book?
What is missing—and what must be let go?

This time, we turn to five practices:

Bring the work as it is.
Take it apart, if necessary.
Return to the story at its core.
Find the structure the work requires.
Move towards a book.

These are not orderly steps towards a predetermined answer. We move between them repeatedly: trying, dismantling, reconsidering and rebuilding as the work demands.

A project may remain unresolved, its edit uncertain, or its dummy not quite right. That does not make it too early; it may be where the masterclass needs to begin.

Taking an edit apart does not reject everything invested in the work. It allows us to return to what lies at its centre: what is being communicated, from whose point of view, and why this story is yours to tell. Photographs, texts, documents, archives, drawings and other materials can then be reconsidered—not to force the project into a familiar model, but to discover the form it requires.

ATLAS LAB is, true to its name, a laboratory for drawing maps of territory that does not yet exist. We do not follow familiar routes or repeat what has worked before. We set aside fixed assumptions, remain open to different perspectives and untested possibilities, and accept unsuccessful experiments as part of the process. ATLAS LAB is about attempting what you have not attempted before.

This masterclass brings RPS’s experience in project development, editing, authorship, the ethics of representation and photobook production into dialogue with BLOW UP PRESS’s story-driven editing, content-led design and independent publishing practice.

Led by Grzegorz Kosmala, Aneta Kowalczyk and Yumi Goto.

We welcome projects in development involving photography, visual expression or visual storytelling.

『The end’s approach comes over my mind as clouds cover the light』

『Notation(s)』

『序の口 — At the Threshold』

10th SIPF International Photobook Showcase 2026
Shop—House by DECK, Singapore

Three books, shaped through entirely different journeys, now meet on the same international stage.

Manami Uetake, Moeko Ishiguro, and Tamaki Yoshida have been shortlisted in the Dummy category of the 10th SIPF International Photobook Showcase 2026.

This year’s showcase brings together 40 published books and dummies, selected from 188 submissions spanning more than 37 countries. Twenty were chosen for the Dummy category. All three artists selected from Japan in this category have spent years developing their work and finding its form as a book at Reminders Photography Stronghold.

Manami Uetake
*The end’s approach comes over my mind as clouds cover the light*

Built from photographs of her late father and the haiku he left behind, the book returns to a relationship that could never be fully understood during his lifetime. Through these fragments, Uetake listens again for her father’s voice and attempts to encounter him anew.

Moeko Ishiguro
*Notation(s)*

Ishiguro translates the sensations and imaginings prompted by scenes she photographs in everyday life into visual “notations” drawn from a vocabulary of sixty geometric forms. The subtle distance between seeing, feeling, and understanding is transformed into the very structure of the book.

Tamaki Yoshida
*Jonokuchi — At the Threshold*

Following the traces of a brown bear that repeatedly entered areas of human habitation in Shiretoko, Yoshida moves between town and forest, human and wild, the visible and the unseen. The book is also a powerful opening chapter in an ongoing long-term research project.

The three books begin in different places, engage with different kinds of time, and arrive through distinct methods.

Yet each asks what a book can do beyond holding a sequence of photographs: what the reader encounters, in what order, and through what physical experience. In this sense, the three works quietly resonate with one another.

Each was made through a long process of questioning, dismantling, and rebuilding until it found a form that could exist only as a book. To see all three recognised together on an international stage is a source of immense pride.

We warmly congratulate all three artists. It has been a privilege to share part of their journey at RPS.

Each project has also taken shape as an artist book produced by the artist in a deliberately defined edition. The number of copies is not arbitrary, but carries a meaning rooted in the work itself, and only that number will be made. To learn more about each artist book, simply tap the tag on its image.

『Return』(2020–)

OPEN CALL: ATLAS LAB Masterclass “When the Story Becomes a Book” | Instructors: BLOW UP PRESS & Yumi Goto | Apply by September 15, 2026 (23:59 JST)

Looking back, this masterclass does not feel like something that began all at once. It feels more like the point where several separate threads, unfolding over time, have finally come together.

I once served as a juror for a photobook award organised by BLOW UP PRESS. Later, they visited Reminders Photography Stronghold, where we held an event introducing their work and their approach to publishing.

Meanwhile, a project developed as a photobook dummy by an artist during an RPS workshop continued to evolve, won an award in Arles and is now set to be published by BLOW UP PRESS.

Encountering work as a juror. Meeting in person and exchanging ideas. Watching the earliest form of a book take shape at RPS. Then seeing it cross borders, find recognition elsewhere and lead to new people and places.

These moments happened at different times and for different reasons. Yet seen together, they make the decision to develop a masterclass with BLOW UP PRESS feel less like a new departure and more like a natural next step.

When a body of work becomes a book, the question is not simply how to sequence photographs or organise other materials.

What is the project trying to communicate? From whose point of view is it being told? Why am I the one to tell it? And why does it need to take the form of a book rather than an exhibition, a film or a website?

How might photographs, texts, documents, archives, drawings and other materials be brought into relation so that the story gains greater clarity and depth—and can reach others more powerfully?

Taking BLOW UP PRESS’s motto, “When the story matters,” as its point of departure, this ATLAS LAB Masterclass brings together the publisher’s story-driven approach to editing, design that grows out of the content, and perspective on bringing books into the world as an independent publisher with RPS’s long-standing work in project development, editing, the position of the author, the ethics of representation and photobook production.

The masterclass will be led by Grzegorz Kosmala and Aneta Kowalczyk of BLOW UP PRESS, together with me, Yumi Goto of RPS.

The aim is not simply to produce a finished object within a short period of time. Participants may need to take apart their current edit or dummy, identify questions that have not yet found language, consider what is missing and what must be let go, and search for the structure the work requires as a book.

If you are currently developing a project involving photography, visual expression or visual storytelling and want to return to the story at its core with fresh eyes, we would be very glad to hear from you.

We look forward to welcoming participants in both Kyoto and Tokyo.

Eva Leitolf and Giulia Cordin’s project Violent Images selected as the recipient of the 27th RPS Grant

We are pleased to announce that Eva Leitolf and Giulia Cordin have been selected as the recipients of the 27th RPS Grant for their project Violent Images.

Working together through Studio Image at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Leitolf and Cordin examine how images are produced, contextualized, circulated, and used within contemporary visual culture.

Violent Images investigates how images participate in the production, circulation, and interpretation of violence. Rather than treating photographs simply as representations of events, the project considers the social, political, and institutional conditions through which images acquire meaning and authority. It also asks how photography can address violence without reproducing the very logics it seeks to critique.

The applications submitted for the March 2026 deadline were reviewed by Alexa Becker, Erik Vroons, Teun van der Heijden, and Andrei Polikanov.

The project will now be further developed through dialogue with RPS. The exhibition venue, dates, selection of works, and spatial presentation have not yet been determined and will take shape through discussions in the coming months.

We look forward to seeing how Violent Images develops within the context of RPS. Stay tuned.

Eva Leitolf and Giulia Cordin’s project Violent Images selected as the recipient of the 27th RPS Grant

We are pleased to announce that Eva Leitolf and Giulia Cordin, who collaborate as a team through Studio Image at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, have been selected as the 27th recipients of the RPS (Reminders Photography Stronghold) Grant for their project Violent Images.

The applications submitted for the March 2026 deadline were reviewed by Alexa Becker, Erik Vroons, Teun van der Heijden, and Andrei Polikanov, who selected Violent Images as the recipient of the 27th RPS Grant.

Violent Images investigates how images participate in the production, circulation, and interpretation of violence within contemporary visual culture. Rather than approaching photographs simply as representations of events, the project examines the social, political, and institutional conditions through which images are produced, distributed, consumed, and remembered. It asks how photography might address violence without reproducing the very mechanisms and conventions it seeks to critically examine.

A central concern of the project is the relationship between visibility and understanding. In a media environment saturated with images of war, displacement, catastrophe, and systemic violence, greater visibility does not necessarily produce greater knowledge or engagement. Repetition, decontextualization, and accelerated circulation can instead create distance, desensitization, or simplification. Violent Images considers how photography and its contextualization might create space for more critical and responsible ways of reading and engaging with images.

The project will now enter a period of further development through dialogue between Eva Leitolf, Giulia Cordin, and RPS. The exhibition venue, dates, selection of works, and spatial presentation have not yet been determined and will be developed through a series of discussions in the coming months.

We look forward to seeing how Violent Images will take shape within the specific context of RPS.

Please stay tuned for further developments.

STUDIO IMAGE

Studio Image

EVA LEITOLF|
