2025 is the Year of the Snake! In Japanese mythology, the snake holds a deep symbolism rooted in both positive and negative associations. As the sixth sign in the 12-year zodiac cycle, it is often linked to qualities like wisdom, intuition, and transformation.

Snakes in Japanese culture are also tied to spirituality and the supernatural. They are sometimes seen as protectors, representing rebirth and renewal because of their ability to shed their skin. However, they can also symbolize danger or misfortune, reflecting the dual nature of their role in myths and folklore.

New Christmas card! 🎄🟡🟡 Japanese tanuki statues are ceramic figures that come in various sizes and designs, often placed outside shops, restaurants, and homes across Japan. While tanuki are real animals found throughout both rural and urban areas of Japan—commonly referred to as “raccoon dogs”—they hold a special place in Japanese folklore as well. These statues typically portray the tanuki with a large belly, a large hat, and a sake bottle—not too different from Santa Claus! Tanuki statues are often depicted with exaggeratedly large… “baubles,” which symbolize prosperity and good fortune. the Studio Ghibli film, Pom Poko, revolves around the lives of these animals in an ever-evolving Japan.

This card measures A6 and will be printed with gold foil details. Comes with a gold envelope. Preorder link in my profile!

🌲 My holiday shop is now open for pre-orders—link in profile! There’s just a few new Christmas additions, but I’ve also added a few sumo illustrations for anyone interested! I’ll be sharing more about each product in the coming days. Please check them out!

First up is the big reveal of the design for my 2024 Japan tree ornament! It features the beautiful island of Itsukushima, also known as Miyajima, in Hiroshima prefecture. This is a must-visit location for any tourist to Japan, and it was part of my itinerary on my very first visit, too. Not only is the “floating” torii gate iconic, but the local deer are an attraction all on their own.

The design is printed on laser-cut walnut wood and strung with a bright red ribbon trimmed in gold thread. Each ornament comes in a gift box with interior black foam padding for safe storage.

These would make a lovely keepsake for yourself or a gift to another Japan lover! Like last year, these ornaments are limited edition and will be retired after this holiday season, so I encourage you to get your orders in as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Please note that if you add a preorder item to your order, the entire order will ship when the preorder item is ready. This helps to save on shipping and packaging costs. If you need a stocked item sooner, please place a separate order so I can ship it early.

One more important note: I will try my best to get pre-orders shipped out before November 28th, but as usual, Royal Mail is unpredictable and it’s better to be safe. I cannot stress this enough—please try to get your pre-order in as soon as possible if you are able!

Phew! That’s it for now—as always, I ship worldwide. If you have any questions, feel free to ask! ☺️

Long time no illustration post! Here’s a commission I did for a couple a little while back that I thought I would share. It’s heavily cropped due to Instagram’s format but swipe through for a look at details. Just a note that I’m taking commission requests for similar pieces at the moment, starting in mid August for completion before mid September. Please send me a DM if you’re interested in learning more (it doesn’t have to be Japan related)!

Hi all! I’m sorry I’ve been so quiet here lately while I’ve been busy with life stuff and client work. I just wanted to share a few photos I took last week of my latest kimono dressing practice! I still can’t tie a taiko knot to save my life, but I do think I’m getting a little better each time.

I’m still shipping prints and products weekly and I’ve got a couple of new prints in the works which I hope to release for preorder next month. Also, if you’re near Brighton, check out my prints at The Riso Show at — the exhibition ends on May 19, so there are still a few days left to catch it!

🐉 The third of my new holiday cards is of course, my annual zodiac animal! 2024 is the Year of the Dragon, or “ryū” as they are known in Japanese. Unlike their fire-breathing Western counterparts, most Japanese dragons are known as water deities associated with rain and bodies of water. In Japanese art and culture, these serpentine creatures are commonly depicted with long, sinuous bodies, intricate scales, and often adorned with colourful, intricate patterns. Dragons continue to symbolise power, longevity, and good fortune, making them a cherished symbol in Japanese tradition.

🌲 The second of my new holiday cards features a festive shimenawa wreath. Shimenawa (標縄) are ropes typically crafted from rice husk fibres tied with carex w**d before being twisted together. The ropes are traditionally used to demarcate a space considered to be sacred or ritually pure, and are believed to be ward off evil spirits and bad fortune. For this reason, the ropes are found not only at the entrance of Shinto shrines and tied around sacred trees, but fashioned into wreaths to hang at home, especially during the New Year season. My design features a wreath decorated with festive plum blossom, with two fluffy shima enaga (シマエナガ) birds perched in the middle.

This card is a mockup image and the finished card will be stamped in gold foil details. A6 size and comes with a gold envelope.
