Family trip to Seogwipo, Jeju Island, South Korea — my grandmother’s home town. This time felt especially emotional, as our trip also coincided with the 80th year since the end of WWII. Growing up in Japan, our occasional family trips to Korea felt ordinary. But over the years, I’ve grown to fall in love with Jeju’s dazzling nature and rich culture. Hearing my grandmother’s war stories always breaks my heart, yet the way she continues to live with such energy gives me hope.

Supports/Surfaces revisit and research.

Supports/Surfaces was an art movement in 1960-70 that originated in Southern France, where artists rebelled against the political and economic regime. As a contemporary person, I don’t know what that life was like back then, but man I respect the gut it took to expose such risk taking art to deconstruct “painting” and present that out to the world unabashedly. Making this piece was such a liberating process, playing with the balance between restriction and revolt against it.
