Concrete is a new instrument that we developed, marking a new stage for Lightreft.
At its core, Concrete is a stereo saturator and analog filter. An instrument designed to work at the edge of control and destruction. It can enrich a signal with subharmonics, add warmth, weight, and body, or move in the opposite direction and literally break the sound, turning it into a raw, unpredictable texture. This device is not about correctness. It is about character and outcome.
The idea behind Concrete largely grew out of my interest in brutalism. In Eastern Europe, brutalism is often perceived as something heavy and oppressive, associated with gray everyday life and pressure. In Japan, it is read very differently. As an extremely functional, honest, and even expensive language of form. The same concrete, but a completely different meaning.
Concrete itself is neutral. It has no inherent color. Everything depends on context, on the environment, on where and why it is placed. The same is true for Concrete as an instrument. Saturation and filter together can work as a tool for subtle enrichment and enhancement of sound, or become a means of total destruction and reconstruction. It all depends on perspective and intention.
