NEW AUCTIONは、6月28日(土)に第9回目となるオークション「NEW 009」の開催に伴い、オンラインカタログを公開いたしました。

作品が生まれた時代も表現方法も多様ですが、山口勝弘の〈ヴィトリーヌ〉、グレン・ライゴンの〈プロローグ〉シリーズ、5人の作家が南画廊の志水楠男に捧げたポートフォリオ、ヘルムート・ニュートンが撮影したデヴィッド・ボウイ、田名網敬一の4mの大作《無限宇宙》など、数多くの素晴らしい作品が集まりました。それぞれの作家や制作者が、どのような思いで世界を捉え、作品を生み出してきたのかを想像しながら作品をご覧いただけると光栄です。

また作品をコレクションすることは、その方の世界を広げていくことにつながると信じています。多くの人の手や想いによって伝えられてきた今回の作品も、そのきっかけの一つとなれば幸いです。

NEW AUCTION is delighted to announce the release of the online catalog today, in conjunction with the 8th sale, "NEW 009,” scheduled for Saturday, June 28, 2025.

Spanning a wide range of eras and modes of expression, the selection includes Vitrine by Yamaguchi Katsuhiro, Glenn Ligon’s Prologue series, a portfolio dedicated to Shimizu Kusuo of the Minami Gallery by five artists, a striking portrait of David Bowie by Helmut Newton, and Tanaami Keiichi’s monumental four meter work Infinite Universe, among many other remarkable pieces. It would be a valuable opportunity for visitors to view the works while imagining how the artist or creator perceives the world and translates that vision into form.

We also believe that collecting works of art is to expand one’s own world. If the works presented here—carried through time by many hands and hearts—can serve as the beginning of such a journey, it would be our greatest pleasure.

The auction preview will take place at SAI in Shibuya MIYASH*TA PARK, allowing attendees to appreciate all the exhibited artworks in person. The auction will also be held at SAI concurrently with the preview.

このたびNEWでは、2025年1月10日（金）より1月23日（木）まで、スティーヴ・ジャンセンによる個展「The Space Between」を開催いたします。1980年代初頭、絶大な人気を誇ったイギリスのバンド、Japanのドラマーとして知られるスティーヴ・ジャンセンは、写真家としても活動しており、これまでに数多くの作品を撮影してきました。1981年にPARCOで日本初の展覧会を開催して以来、KYOTOGRAPHIEに続く3回目となる本展覧会では、2022年秋にジャンセンが来日して撮影した作品群が、NEWの空間を埋め尽くします。

東京都心の建物が乱雑に並ぶ不規則な建築構造からインスピレーションを得て、「レジステンシャリズム」というテーマが浮かんだ本展覧会。全て新作で構成される本展では、音の風景と断片化された都市のイメージが想像力を掻き立て、東京の建築物の間にある隙間に気づき、立ち止まることを促します。作品とじっくり向き合える空間が構築されるとともに、展示作品やオーディオ付きポストカード、Tシャツも販売されます。世界中の都市を巡るジャンセンだからこそ表現できる、都市風景への鋭い解釈が反映された無機物が奏でる有機的なスティーヴ・ジャンセンの世界をぜひご体感ください。

NEW presents a solo exhibition titled “The Space Between” by Steve Jansen, from 10th - 23rd January 2025. Known as the co-founding member of the band JAPAN, Steve Jansen is also active as a photographer, having captured numerous works over the years. This marks his third exhibition in Japan, following his debut at PARCO in 1981 and KYOTOGRAPHIE in 2018. Steve’s new work features photographic images taken during his visit to Tokyo in autumn 2022 during the COVID-19 pandemic, along with a sound installation for this exhibition, bringing the NEW space to life.

Drawing inspiration from the chaotic arrangement of buildings in central Tokyo, where irregular architectural structures gave rise to the theme of Resistentialism, the exhibition explores this playful theory. Composed entirely of new works, the audio landscape and fragmented urban images stir the imagination, inviting viewers to stop and notice the space between structures in Tokyo. NEW invites visitors to immerse themselves in this transitory experience, with artworks, audio postcards, and T-shirts available for purchase at the venue.

『NEW 006』では、アンディー・ウォーホルの代表作である「マリリン・モンロー」シリーズの中で最も人気の高い「ピンク・マリリン」が出品されます。世界中の数あるオークションの中でも数年に一度しか出品されることのない大変貴重な作品です。マリリン・モンローの死から5年後の1967年に制作された本シリーズは、シルクスクリーンという技法を用い、連続と差異を繰り返しみせる事で人々の持つイメージに対し疑問を投げかけたアメリカン・ポップアートの代名詞とも言える作品です。

In “NEW 006,” the notable artwork from Andy Warhol’s iconic Marilyn Monroe series, “Pink Marilyn,” will be presented. This highly valuable piece is rarely auctioned worldwide, making it an exceptional and precious artwork. Created in 1967, five years after Marilyn Monroe’s death, this series is emblematic of American Pop Art, challenging people’s perceptions through the use of the screenprint technique, repeating continuity and variation.
Additionally, the auction will feature works that transcend time and nationality, connecting the lineage of art. Notable pieces include Yokoo Tadanori’s Portrait of Mr. Haizuka Teruzo, created shortly after his declaration as a painter in 1980, Murakami Takashi’s large painting Blue Skull, evoking thoughts of life and death, and Takeda Teppei’s Painting of Painting, showcasing expressions that can only be fully appreciated when confronting the actual artwork, including the texture of paint and traces of strokes.

この度、NEW AUCTIONでは、日米のフォトリアリズムを代表するリチャード・エステス、上田薫の二人展「Contrast in Photorealism」を12月8日(金)から12月22日(金)まで開催いたします。

リチャード・エステス(1932-)は1960 年代後半からアメリカで起こった芸術運動フォトリアリズムを代表する作家として知られています。エステスは主に巨大都市ニューヨークを舞台にデリやダイナーなど街角の光景から近代建築が立ち並ぶ都市景観まで徹底した精密描写により現代を表現してきました。

上田薫(1928-)は1970年から対象そのものだけを写実的に描く表現に取り組み、日本におけるスーパーリアリズム(フォトリアリズム)の第一人者として広く知られています。上田は割れて落ちる生卵、スプーンで掬い取られたゼリー、密集した大小の泡など身近な物体の一瞬の姿を捉えた作品を克明に描き、肉眼による認識をはるかに凌ぐ視覚世界を提示してきました。

この時代におけるこれまでの伝統的な写実絵画とフォトリアリズム絵画の違いは自らが撮った写真(現実)を視覚的参照として使用し、細部に渡り注意を払いながら忠実に精巧に描き上げることにあります。しかしフォトリアリスト達は現実を模倣するために写真を使用するのではなく、直接観察が可能にするよりもはるかに鮮明な焦点を当てて現実を再構築するために写真を使用しているのです。

本展では同時代を生きた日米を代表するフォトリアリストによる作品の共通点や異なる性質を感じていただくと共に、写真をもとに絵画を形成することが特異ではなくなった現代を生きる我々だからこそ体感できる次元をお楽しみいただけましたら幸いです。

NEW AUCTION’s fifth sale, “NEW 005,” presents a selection of artworks by a host of eminent artists, recognized both in Japan and internationally. Notable works include a collection of prints by David Hockney, an artist who has been at the forefront of contemporary art for over 60 years; a sculptural work by Theaster Gates, an interdisciplinary artist known for expressing the complex context of Blackness across various media and genres; and “Gunpowder Painting” by Cai Guo-Qiang, who garnered attention through his large-scale solo exhibition at the National Art Center, Tokyo, co-hosted by Saint Laurent. “NEW 005” will also feature a variety of outstanding works across many diverse genres, including a sculpture by Antony Gormley, which is presented for the first time at a domestic auction, as well as a rare ceramic piece by Peter Voulkos.

The auction preview, where all of the works will be on display to the public, will take place at “SAI,” located in Shibuya’s MIYASH*TA PARK, from Saturday, October 28th to Friday, November 3rd.

本作品は、アンディ・ウォーホル（1928-1987）を代表する『Flowers』シリーズ（1970年）の一作品で、1950年代広告イラストレーターであったウォーホルが自然の描写に移行した初期の作品である。本作「Flowers」も自然写真家パトリシア・コーフィールドが1964年の『Modern Photography』誌に掲載したハイビスカスの花の写真をもとに、イメージを流用した作品だ。ウォーホルは、生活の一部である日用品や物には人にとって大きな意味を持ち、それらのイメージには潜在的な芸術的価値があると考えた。彼の特徴である鮮やかな色彩で花のモチーフを表現し、手描きの背景と合わせて、伝統的な美術史のテーマをサイケデリックな室内装飾品に変容。1960年代のフラワーパワームーブメントを想起させる一方で、ケネディ大統領暗殺の直後に制作されたことから、弔いの象徴とも解釈される。

This work「 Flowers 」from his well-known 『 Flowers 』series (1970) by Andy Warhol (1928 - 1987) represents an early work in which Warhol, a 1950s advertising illustrator, moved to depict nature. Like many of Warhol’s earlier screenprints, Flowers uses appropriated imagery; the basis of the work is a photograph of hibiscus flowers by nature photographer Patricia Caulfield in the 1964 issue of Modern Photography. He believed that everyday items and objects had great meaning to people, and these symbols contained their unexplored artistic value. He drenched the flowers’ floppy shape with his signature vibrant coloration and set them against a hand-drawn background, transforming traditional art historical themes into psychedelic indoor décor. While they evoke the Flower Power movement of the 1960s, Warhol’s Flowers have also been interpreted as a symbol of mourning, as the artist created these works just after President John F. Kennedy’s assassination.

アメリカで最も著名なポップアートの実践者であるキース・ヘリング (1958 - 1990) とアンディ・ウォーホル (1928 - 1987) の交わりを象徴する《Andy Mouse》シリーズ。4点からなる本シリーズは、両者の共作ではないが、ウォーホルがポップアート界にもたらしたその影響力を讃えるために、ヘリングによって制作されたオーデ作品集である。作中でミッキーマウス風のキャラクター〈アンディ・マウス〉に変身したウォーホルのその風貌は、ミッキーマウスの持つ普遍性と魅力がそのまま彼自身へ憑依したことを黙示する。

本作品では、アンディ・マウスが1ドル紙幣の中に描かれている。ヘリングにとってのウォーホルとは、アメリカンドリームの象徴であり、その功績は世界の文化意識に揺るぎない普遍性をもたらした大いなる存在であった。その思いは、アメリカ文化にとっても大きな意味合いを持つディズニー、とりわけ両作家のポップ・アイコンとして機能していたミッキーマウスを用いることによって、ウォーホル自体が、アメリカ文化の一部へと取り込まれていったことを意味する。ヘリングらしいエネルギッシュな色彩で描かれ、顔のない人型など特筆すべきモチーフを備える本作は、1980年代のセレブリティ、アイコン、金、名声に対するその無我夢中な貪欲さが凝縮された、美しいポストモダンの作品である。

The "Andy Mouse" series marks the intersection of two of the most prominent American practitioners of Pop Art: Keith Haring (1958 - 1990) and Andy Warhol (1928 - 1987). It is not a collaboration between the two artists but rather a collection of works produced by Haring as an ode to the impact of Andy Warhol. The series, which consists of 4 prints, sees Warhol transformed into a Mickey Mouse style character called 'Andy Mouse'. The work transposes the ubiquity and appeal of Mickey onto the legendary appeal of Andy Warhol.

In this particular work, we see Andy Mouse placed on a dollar bill. Haring has stated that this is supposed to represent the extent to which Warhol had become part of American culture. Haring believed that Warhol was an icon of the American dream, becoming successful and irremovably universal in the world’s cultural consciousness. Disney was hugely influential for both Warhol and Haring, with Mickey Mouse acting as a pop icon for the artists. The series is executed in energetic colors that are typical for Haring, and feature other notable motifs, such as the faceless humanoid figures. The works are beautifully postmodern and encapsulate the 1980s obsession with celebrity, icons, money, and fame.

三重県鈴鹿市出身の画家、浅野弥衛 (1914 - 1996) は、職業軍人としての役目を終えた1930年代中頃より絵筆を持つようになり、制作活動を開始する。同時期に津市出身の詩人・野田理一とも親交を深めるようになり、野田の所有していたヨーロッパの画集や雑誌を通して、当時欧米で広がりつつあった新しい芸術運動の存在を知るようになった浅野であったが、生前には自らをアルティザン (職人) であると語ったように、独自の道を歩みながら抽象表現方法を築いていく。浅野の代表的な作風として、1950年代後半より描き始めた乳白色の画面に無数の鋭い線が描かれる絵画が挙げられる。その特徴的な描写は、ローラーとペイントナイフによって伸ばされた半乾きの白絵具の上から鉄筆などで画面を引っ掻くことで作られた。白絵具が乾くと、黒絵具を全面に塗り込みすぐに拭き取り、窪みに残った黒絵具が線として浮き出ることで作品が出来上がる。

本作品《Untitled》は、1968年に制作された画家の代表的な抽象絵画であり、その一見冷徹にも見える白と黒は繊細で確固たる筆跡となり、浅野弥衛の詩情豊かな世界観を描き出している。

The painter Asano Yae (1914 - 1996 ) was born in the city of Suzuka in Mie Prefecture and began producing work during the mid-1930s, picking up paint brushes after serving in the military. Around the same time, Asano became close friends with Noda Riichi, a poet from the city of Tsu, and learned about the new art movements that were spreading across Europe and America from art magazines and books that were in Noda’s possession. However, whilst alive, Asano claimed to be an artisan (craftsperson), not an artist, pursuing methods of abstract expression whilst walking alone down Asano’s own unique path. Asano’s representative style is evident in the milky-white paintings from the late 1950s, in which innumerable sharp lines are drawn across the surface. Asano produced these characteristic works by scratching a stylus across the surface of half dried white paint that had been applied with rollers and paint knives. Once the paint was dry, black paint was applied to the entire surface and immediately wiped away. The painting was completed by the black remaining in the hollows of the surface that emerged as lines.

This work, “Untitled”, was produced in 1968 and is symbolic of this period of Asano’s work. Though the black and white colors seem cold-hearted at first glance, they draw out Asano’s poetic world view and expresses it like delicate handwriting.
