国産時計の歴史を語るうえで、欠かすことのできないCITIZEN。
その始まりは1918年。
国産時計づくりを目指し、「尚工舎時計研究所」が設立されたことに遡ります。
1924年には、同研究所が懐中時計を完成し、
その時計に与えられた名が「CITIZEN」。
一部の人だけでなく、広く市民に愛される時計であってほしい。
その願いを込めて、当時の東京市長・後藤新平が名付けたと伝えられています。
そして1930年、その名を受け継ぐかたちでシチズン時計株式会社が誕生しました。
戦後、CITIZENは日本の実用時計を大きく前へ進めていきます。
1952年には、国産初の男性用カレンダー付き手巻腕時計「CITIZEN CALENDAR」を発売。
1958年には、国産初のアラーム付き腕時計。
1959年には、国産初の完全防水腕時計「CITIZEN Parawater」を世に送り出しました。
さらに1976年、世界初の光発電アナログ時計「クリストロン ソーラーセル」を発表。
電池交換を必要としない時計を目指したこの挑戦は、のちのエコ・ドライブへとつながっていきます。

CITIZENの歴史には、“市民のための時計”という名にふさわしい、実直なものづくりの精神が宿っています。
When discussing the history of Japanese watchmaking, CITIZEN is a name that cannot be overlooked.
Its story begins in 1918 with the establishment of the Shokosha Watch Research Institute, founded with the goal of producing quality timepieces in Japan.
In 1924, the institute completed a pocket watch that would become the foundation of the brand.
The watch was given the name "CITIZEN."
It is said that Tokyo Mayor Shinpei Goto chose the name with the hope that the watch would not be reserved for a privileged few, but would be loved and used by ordinary citizens.
In 1930, the company that inherited this name was established as Citizen Watch Co., Ltd..
After the war, CITIZEN continued to push Japanese watchmaking forward through a series of innovations.
In 1952, the company introduced CITIZEN CALENDAR, Japan's first men's hand-wound wristwatch equipped with a calendar.
In 1958, CITIZEN released Japan's first alarm wristwatch.
A year later, in 1959, it introduced CITIZEN Parawater, Japan's first fully water-resistant wristwatch.
Then, in 1976, CITIZEN unveiled the Crystron Solar Cell, the world's first light-powered analog watch.
This pioneering achievement laid the foundation for what would later become Eco-Drive technology.
Rather than pursuing extravagance, CITIZEN has always focused on creating reliable timepieces that fit naturally into everyday life.
The history of CITIZEN reflects the spirit of honest craftsmanship and innovation—true to the name that was created for the people.
