土艸ではMITTANさんと約10年ぶりのコラボが実現しました！

MITTANの理念である「THE CIRCULATION OF CLOTHES」の要素の一つ「修繕・染め直し（REPAIR / REDYE）」のパーツの一つとして西川の手織布のはぎれを使用頂きました。

主に帯を作っている自分はそれ程大量のハギレが出る訳ではありませんが、布の織り始め／終わり、小物制作時のハギレなどは必ず発生し、長年の間にそれなりに溜まります（なんやかんやで捨てられないもので…笑）。

今回、シャツやパンツの修繕や補強としてこんなにカッコよく使って頂きました。10年15年以上前に織った布もあり、まさかこんな風に日の目を見ることが出来るとは、取っておいてよかった〜！三谷さん、このたびはお声がけありがとうございました！またぜひよろしくお願いいたします！！

昨秋の東京ステーションギャラリーでのカルン・タカール氏のインド更紗コレクションの記事でも書きましたが、現在の繊維産業の大量生産、消費、廃棄は昨日今日はじまったものではなく歴史の流れと人間の性の必然にも思えます。進行中のイラン戦争のホルムズ海峡封鎖からのエネルギー問題はますます予断を許さず恐怖さえ感じます。せめてこれが過剰供給廃棄社会からの意識の変換に繋がればと淡い期待を持ってみたりもしますが……

A dream collaboration with MITTAN has finally come true at "tuticusa" after nearly 10 years!

Fragments of my hand-woven cloth were used as part of MITTAN's "REPAIR / REDYE" initiative—a core element of their philosophy, "THE CIRCULATION OF CLOTHES."

Since I primarily weave Obi sashes, I don't produce a massive amount of remnants. However, small scraps from the beginning or end of a warp, or offcuts from making small goods, inevitably occur. Over the years, they’ve piled up quite a bit (I just can’t bring myself to throw them away! lol).

This time, those scraps were transformed into such cool reinforcements and repairs for shirts and pants. Some of these pieces were woven 10 or 15 years ago. I never imagined they would see the light of day like this—I'm so glad I kept them! Mitani-san, thank you so much for reaching out. I look forward to working together again!

As I mentioned in my post last autumn regarding Karun Indian Chintz collection at the Tokyo Station Gallery, the mass production, consumption, and waste of today's textile industry didn't start overnight. It feels like an inevitable consequence of history and human nature. Currently, the energy crisis caused by the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz in the ongoing Iran War is becoming increasingly unpredictable—it’s truly frightening. I hold a faint hope that this situation might at least lead to a shift in consciousness, away from a society of oversupply and waste... but we shall see.

土艸にて飾布「爆心」と「静寂」をお求めのお客様が写真を送って下さいました。

解体されたお宅から引き取られたという筬欄間がまるで誂えたかのようにぴったり。作り手の自分の想像を超えた嬉しさです！

今回、布の背景として古布をあわせたくて銀座の古裂古美術 蓮さん .kobijyutsu.ren にご相談しました。蓮さんが江戸後期の葛布（経糸は木綿、緯糸が葛）の道中着を解いた古裂を「これがきっとあうと思って」と出して下さいました。もともとは緑だったようにも見える何とも言えない渋い藍の色味と布味が痺れるほどかっこよく、しかも大きさもバッチリ。もうこれしかない！と蓮さんと二人で興奮したのでした。

江戸後期19世紀の布と21世紀令和の私が織った布が重なり、さらにきっと何世代もの住人を頭上から見守っていたであろう欄間に納まって、この布が作者の私の手を完全に離れてお客様の時間と重なっていく瞬間に立ち会えた気がします。Hさま、このたびはありがとうございました！

今回、土艸の展示会場は原則撮影禁止といたしました。

昨年春に出展者全員に撮影の可否についてアンケートを取りました。OKの人、不可の人、条件付きで可という人と様々。SNS等で多くの方に情報を拡散していただくことが主流となっている時代です。一方で来場の方々が撮影が出来てしまうことで目の前にある事象との一期一会の邂逅を奪うことにもなっていないか…？

結果、原則としてご来場者には撮影禁止をお願いすると決めました。

会期前日の搬入日。
誉田屋さんが作ってくださった土艸の暖簾に私たち出展者もはじめて迎えられて言葉を失いました。もちろん失っただけでなくみなそれぞれマジマジと手に取って見て、文字は刺繍だ！！とまた言葉を失いました。

一筋の暖簾の存在が場が引き締め
結界を作り、奥の世界へ誘う。
布と文字の持つ劇的な力を多くの方々が
意識するしないに関わらず体感したと思います。

ご来場のみなさんが次々とインスタにあげてくださった
「土艸」の文字が黒く浮かび上がり
暖簾越しに会場が透ける数々の画像を見て

撮影禁止がこの暖簾の存在で完成した！
と思った西川でした。

土艸の由来と顛末

多くの方から「土艸 tuticusa」という展示会タイトルにお褒めの言葉をいただきました。

この会は誉田屋源兵衛 第十代当主の山口源兵衛さんと長年国際機関・大学研究機関で活躍されてきた伊藤徹さん・由貴子さんお二人の呼びかけからはじまりました。そこに滝沢都さんと私、西川はるえが呼ばれ、この5名から広がっていくことになります。2024年暮れのことでした。

土に近い(/土の匂いのする)布 / 儚い布 / 草木布

これが5名での最初のミーティングで源兵衛さん、伊藤さんから投げられた言葉でした。

この言葉を受け取った瞬間に、自分がテキスタイルの専門学生時代（1990年代頭）、架空のテキスタイルブランドを作るという課題で「土臭い」からイメージした
「La TUTICUSA」
というブランドを作った記憶が一気に立ち上がり、

そこに源兵衛さんが、かつて今井俊博氏プロデュースの
「風水土のしつらい展」を開催した某百貨店で
「こんな土臭いものはダメだ、もっとリファインしないと」と
「土臭い」を否定された、という体験がリンクし

2025年1月「土艸 tuticusa」が誕生、動き始めました。

そして2026年春、お彼岸。
23組のつちくさい仲間達が集い、1000名近くのつちくささに惹きつけられた人たちが京都室町に集まって下さいました。

23歳の自分にこの事実を知らせてもきっと
えー信じらんない！と言うでしょう。

今回、土艸での多くの学生さんや若い来場者のみなさんの真剣な眼差しが忘れられません。

10代、20代、30代の今、感じていること悩んでいること考えていること作っていること…いつか全く想像も思いもよらないところで花が咲くこともあるかもしれません。

みんな、頑張ろうね！！！


The Origins and Afterglow of tuticusa

Many people kindly complimented us on the title of the exhibition, "tuticusa."

The project began in late 2024, sparked by a call from Genbei Yamaguchi, the 10th-generation head of Kondaya Genbei, and Toru and Yukiko Ito, who have long been active in international organizations and academic research. Along with Miyako Takizawa, a specialist in linen, and myself, Harue Nishikawa, the five of us set this vision in motion.

"Fabric close to the earth / Scent of the soil / Fragile cloth / Grass and tree cloth"

These were the words Genbei-san and Ito-san threw out during our first meeting.

The moment I heard them, a memory from my days as a textile student in the early 90s came rushing back. For a class assignment to create a fictional brand, I had conceived a brand called "La TUTICUSA," inspired by the Japanese word tsuchikusai (earthy/smelling of soil).

That memory instantly linked with a story Genbei-san shared. Years ago, at a department store exhibition he produced, he was told, "This is too tsuchikusai—it’s no good. You need to refine it more." His experience of having that "earthiness" rejected connected with my student-day vision.

And so, in January 2025, "tuticusa" was born.

Spring 2026, during the Equinox.
Twenty-three groups of "earthy" kindred spirits gathered, and nearly a thousand people drawn to the spirit of tuticusa flocked to Muromachi, Kyoto.

If I could tell my 23-year-old self about this, she would surely say, "No way! I can’t believe it!"

I will never forget the serious, intent gazes of the many students and young visitors at the exhibition.

To those of you in your teens, 20s, or 30s—whatever you are feeling, worrying about, thinking, or creating right now... it may one day bloom in a place you could never have imagined.

Keep going, everyone. Let’s do our best together!

I fill the Himalayan threads with colors of nature,
and through the act of weaving, I erect them into a "structure."

By sublimating the raw, rustic vitality of the materials
through layers of color and sophistication,
I manifest the order and boundaries of the field,
dwelling within "AWAI."
