[HARIBAN AWARD 2026 Juror Interview | KIM Jeong Eun]

As part of the project for the international collotype competition HARIBAN AWARD 2026, we interviewed juror KIM Jeong Eun.

She has worked across publishing, exhibition-making, and platform building with a focus on contemporary photography in Asia. She is the publisher of the photography imprint IANNBOOKS and the founder of THE REFERENCE, an art book and exhibition platform based in Seoul. Since 2024, she has served as Fair Director of T3 PHOTO ASIA in Tokyo, overseeing the gallery sections and international partnership strategy.

We ask her how she first came across photography, how contemporary Korean photography is received in Japan , and how does she view Asian photography.

On the first day of the PHOTOFAIRS SHANGHAI 2026, visitors were able to look at our portfolio with great interest. This is our second time to visit Shanghai. The night view is amazing. We will be open tomorrow from 12 noon to 8pm, so we hope to see you there!

ジョージア州とサウスカロライナ州シーアイランド諸島に根ざしたガラ・ギーチー文化を視覚的に探求したものである。ガラ・ギーチーは、奴隷にされた西アフリカ・中央アフリカ出身者の子孫であり、孤立と強靭さで、言語、精神性、そして文化的伝統を守ってきた。地域特有の湿地、水田、海岸の風景は、自然の美しさと神秘性に満ち、文化と生態系の揺るぎない強さを体現する。儀式、フードゥー、そして呪術の実践を写し、祖先の記憶と精神的信仰が、人々、土地、そして海との神聖な関係をどのように支え、そして文化の変容、気候変動、歴史的混乱に直面しながらも、どのように抵抗と再生の手段として機能し続けているかを考察している。

Kennedy Carter at Fuko

We are currently holding a solo exhibition of Kennedy Carter's work. Please come and see the eight collotype prints and one short film quietly nestled in the picturesque building.

This work is a visual exploration of the Gala Gheechi culture rooted in the Sea Islands of Georgia and South Carolina. The Gala Gheechi are descendants of enslaved people from West and Central Africa, who have preserved their language, spirituality, and cultural traditions through isolation and resilience. The region's unique wetlands, rice paddies, and coastal landscapes are full of natural beauty and mystery, embodying the unwavering strength of the culture and ecosystem. Depicting rituals, hoodoo, and magical practices, the work examines how ancestral memory and spiritual beliefs support a sacred relationship with people, land, and sea, and how they continue to function as a means of resistance and regeneration in the face of cultural transformation, climate change, and historical upheaval.

What does the Grand Prize Residency involve?



Two-week Residency

– The Grand Prize Winner will collaborate with the Master Printer of the Benrido Collotype Atelier during the stay in Kyoto. Working closely with printers, the Winner will produce eight collotype prints of the award-winning works.
– The Grand Prize Winner will learn about the origins of the collotype and how it is made through the Collotype Academy’s collotype hand-printing workshop. The winner will receive one postcard-size plate and one 8×10 inch plate at the beginning of the workshop.
– An artist talk and social event will be held with Benrido’s staff and craftspeople.

Solo Exhibition
The 2026 Grand Prize Winner’s collotype prints will be exhibited in a solo exhibition held in the spring of the following year after their residency is complete.

Publication of the artwork in the official catalogue
The winner’s artwork will be included in the official catalogue of the Hariban Award 2026, to be published in April 2027.

*Flights, accommodation, and production expenses will be provided by Benrido. Details to be determined with the Grand Prize Winner.
*The 2026 Grand Prize Winner’s two-week residency in Kyoto will take place from October 2026.

From 2024 awards, the winners of the Juror’s Choice Award and the Benrido Award will also receive a free five-day course(Participation is valid within 2 years) at the Benrido Collorype Academy as a supplementary prize. You will be responsible for travel and accommodation costs, but the workshop is highly comprehensive, allowing you to make your own collotype prints! Don‘t miss out!

What awards does the Hariban Award offer?

【Grand Prize】

Selected by Benrido CEO Takumi Suzuki, the Benrido Award winner will receive a dedicated text written by Mr. Suzuki.

For those who couldn’t make it to SHOW LA, we have uploaded some photos of the venue. The left and back walls displayed works by this year’s featured artist, Toshiya Watanabe, and on the table were our portfolio series (23 titles in total) and the Hariban Award catalogue, and on the wall were catalogue pages and collotype prints by Saul Leiter and Masao Yamamoto.

The four days at the show in LA were a wonderful experience. This time, we exhibited Toshiya Watanabe's photography, and his portfolio sold out in just two days. Many people have since purchased our other portfolios, so we are very grateful. Thank you everyone and we will be back to LA next year for sure!
