A Kyoto vintage townhouse built over 100 years ago has been renovated and opened as a new gallery space called “Fuko (Wind and Light).” Their first exhibition is a solo exhibition by Masao Yamamoto, featuring a hanging scroll for the alcove, printed by Benrido using a collotype. The exhibition will run every Thursday through Monday until December 22nd. Fuko is located at 22-21 Nishifukunokawacho, Okazaki, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto City

RON JUDE
“Low Tide” Collotype Portfolio

Low Tide is a selection of six photographs taken between 2018 and 2023, featuring rugged landscapes and exposed nature. The motifs include rough waves at high tide, caves, rocky mountains at low tide, and lava, all captured head-on in the frame and depicted in rich, dense monochrome tones. The six photographs, selected by the artist and Benrido, have been meticulously finished.

Ron Jude
Born in Los Angeles in 1965, he currently lives in Eugene, Oregon, USA, where he teaches photography at the University of Oregon. His works have been exhibited at venues including the Photographers' Gallery in London, the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, and the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, and his publications include Alpine Star, Emmett, Executive Model, Lick Creek Line, Lago, and 12 Hz.

『ロー・タイド』は、荒々しい景観と剥き出しの自然をモチーフにし、2018年から2023年の間に撮影されたものから６点のセレクションとなっています。モチーフは、満潮時の荒波、洞窟、干潮時の岩山、溶岩などで、それらを真正面からフレームに捉え、豊かで密度の濃いモノクロームの諧調で写し出しています。作家と便利堂でセレクトした6点を繊細に仕上げました。

ロン・ジュード
1965年ロサンゼルス生まれ、アメリカ合衆国オレゴン州ユージーン在住し、オレゴン大学で写真を教えている。ロンドンのフォトグラファーズ・ギャラリー、シカゴ現代写真美術館、ロサンゼルスのゲティ美術館などで展示を開催し、作品集に『Alpine Star』、『Emmett』、『Executive Model』、『Lick Creek Line』、『Lago』、『12 Hz』などがある。

This collotype portfolio features works created using the 19th-century photographic technique known as “ambrotype” that Yamamoto has recently been working on. Also known as wet-plate photography, ambrotypes are characterized by the appearance of negative images as positives when viewed against a black background. This portfolio features three delicate works depicting birds and plants, a flower and driftwood, recreating the unique texture of beautiful, detailed glass negatives. The handmade case contains a sheet stamped with the artist’s signature.

近年、山本昌男が新たに取り組んでいる「アンブロタイプ」という19世紀の写真技法を用いた作品からのコロタイプ版ポートフォリオです。湿板写真とも呼ばれるアンブロタイプは、黒い背景を当てて見ると陰画が陽画として見えるのが特徴です。今回のポートフォリオは鳥と植物、花と枯木を写した繊細な３点の作品を選び、美しく精細なガラスネガ独特の風合いを再現。ハンドメイドのケースの中には作家によるサインと落款が押されたシートが入っています。

Sayuri Ichida
Absentee
Collotype Portfolio

UK-based Japanese artist Ichida's work explores the complexities of emotion by capturing the human form and sculptural objects, reflecting her own memories and life experiences. "Absentee," featuring Ichida's own body as the subject, evokes a sense of absence, or detachment from oneself or reality, as the word "absentee" suggests. This selection features six works from this series, published in 2022.

SAYURI ICHIDA
After more than a decade in the commercial photography industry, Sayuri Ichida completed her MA in Photography Arts at the University of Westminster in 2022. She is now based in Margate, southeastern England, where her work explores impermanence and identity, creating images that evoke tranquility, fragility, and mystery. Her photographs have been exhibited internationally and are held in collections including VERBUND COLLECTION and Museum Voorlinden.

英国を拠点に活動する日本人アーティストの市田の作品は、自身の記憶や人生経験を反映させながら、人間の姿や彫刻的なオブジェを捉えることによって感情の複雑さを探求しています。市田自身の身体を被写体とした『アブセンティー』は、不在者というその言葉から、自己や現実からの離脱、または不在の感覚を喚起するようなものとなっていて、2022年に出版された同シリーズから６点をセレクトしました。

10年以上商業写真業界で活躍した後、2022年にウェストミンスター大学で写真芸術の修士号を取得。現在はイングランド南東部のマーゲートを拠点に、無常とアイデンティティを探求し、静寂、脆さ、そして神秘性を呼び起こすイメージを制作しています。市田の作品は国際的に展示されており、VERBUND COLLECTIONやMuseum Voorlindenなどのコレクションに収蔵されています。

Fan Ho's new mini-portfolio is now available!

This is the second volume of Fan Ho's collotype portfolio, known for his black-and-white photographs capturing the streets of Hong Kong and its people in the 1950s. Echoing the highly acclaimed previous "Selected Works," this selection conveys the street atmosphere of Hong Kong at the time, showcasing Fan Ho's signature works, skillfully utilizing the contrast of light and shadow to create dramatic atmospheres.

Known for his tranquil and poetic photographs and installations, Yamamoto Masao's new portfolio marks his second installment, following his 2020 release of "Birds." The selection was made in collaboration with Benrido and the artist, and, like his previous works, the prints have been faithfully reproduced from the sepia-toned originals. Furthermore, some of the works in this portfolio have already sold out in his original editions, making them available exclusively as collotype prints.

Two photography exhibitions organized by Benrido will be on display as part of Kyotographie’s KG+. Maja Daniels, the Grand Prize winner of the Hariban Award 2024, will exhibit collotype prints from her work at Gensoan, an traditional vintage house in Kyoto, from April 16th to April 24th.
Meanwhile, Benrido Gallery will be hosting an exhibition of portraits of Japanese artists taken by father and son Francis and Tom Haar, from April 10th to May 31st. Admission to both shows is free, so be sure to stop by if you’re in Kyoto.


便利堂が主催する二つの写真展がKyotographieのKG+として展示します。ハリバンアワード2024のグランプリ受賞者のマヤ・ダニエルズは、京都の玄想庵という町家でのコロタイププリントを展示します。会期は4月16日から4月24日まで。一方、便利堂ギャラリーではフランシス・ハールとトム・ハールの父息子が撮った日本の芸術家たちの肖像写真の展示を行います。こちらは4月10日から5月31日まで。両方とも入場料は無料ですので、京都に来られたら是非お立ち寄りください。
