丹後ちりめんって、どんな場所で生まれたのか？

丹後では、1300年以上にわたり、
絹織物の文化が紡がれてきました。

その長い歴史の中で、
「丹後ちりめん」が生まれたのは、およそ300年前。

積み重ねられてきた技術や暮らしの延長線上に、
新しい価値として生まれたのが丹後ちりめんです。

今回の活動報告では、
そのルーツを分かりやすくご紹介しています。

もし、丹後ちりめんがなくなったら——

日本の着物文化そのものにも、
大きな影響が出ると言われています。

実は今、その産地は
大きな転換期にあります。

だからこそ、
「今の暮らしの中でどう残すか？」

その問いから生まれたのが、
今回のシルクシュシュ “mayure” です。

今回の活動報告では、
「丹後ちりめん」のことを
はじめての方にも分かるようにまとめました。

ツアー最終日、宮津市にある元伊勢籠神社へ参拝

その後、天橋立の景色をそっと視界に入れながら、みんなで記念撮影

京都駅でお見送りをしたあとも、まるで夢の中にいたかのような、濃密で多幸感に満ちた時間の余韻が残っています。

今回、一期一会の本当に素晴らしい方々と出会い、

人と人、地域と地域がこうしてつながっていく瞬間に立ち会えたことを、心からうれしく感じる旅になりました。

このご縁が、これからさらに深まり、広がっていくことを心から願っています。

On the final day of the tour, we visited Motoise Kono Shrine in Miyazu City.

Afterward, with the scenery of Amanohashidate gently within our view, we gathered for a commemorative photo together.

Even after seeing everyone off at Kyoto Station, the lingering feeling remained—an intense, joy-filled time that felt almost like being in a dream.

This journey allowed me to meet truly wonderful people through once-in-a-lifetime encounters, and to witness the very moments when people connect with one another, and regions connect with regions. It was a journey that filled my heart with genuine happiness.

I sincerely hope that these connections will continue to deepen and grow from here.

丹後ちりめんの産地・与謝野町にある Create Ebara（クリエイト エバラ）へ。

今回は、代表取締役の江原英則さんにご案内いただき、ブランドの背景やものづくりについてお話を伺いました。

そのルーツは、1950年創業の「江原紋工所」。織物の設計図ともいえる 紋紙づくり からスタートした会社です。
紋紙を通して培われてきた精緻な設計力と感覚は、今もシルクジャカードの表現に息づいています。

中でも印象的だったのが 曜変天目染のテキスタイル。
光の当たり方によって表情を変える色合いは、布でありながら奥行きのある景色のようで、思わず見入ってしまいました。

ツアーでは、併設のカフェにも立ち寄り、シルクに囲まれた空間でひと休み。
くつろぎながら過ごすひとときの中で、織物が特別な存在から、日々の暮らしにそっと寄り添うものへと感じられていきました。

We visited Create Ebara in Yosano Town, a key production area of Tango chirimen.
During our visit, we were kindly guided by Hidenori Ebara, President and CEO, who shared the story behind the brand and its craftsmanship.

Create Ebara traces its roots back to Ebara Monkosho, founded in 1950, a company that began with the making of mon-gami—the paper pattern cards that serve as the blueprints for woven designs. The precision and sensibility cultivated through mon-gami making continue to shape Create Ebara’s silk jacquard textiles today.

One piece that left a strong impression was the Yōhen Tenmoku–dyed textile. Its color subtly shifts with the light, creating a sense of depth that feels almost landscape-like, drawing the eye in again and again.

As part of the tour, we also stopped by the on-site café, taking a quiet break surrounded by silk. Spending time in this space gently reframed textiles from something to admire, to something meant to live with in everyday life.

It was a visit that offered a thoughtful glimpse into how tradition, design, and daily living come together through silk.

丹後ちりめんの老舗メーカー、丸仙株式会社を訪問しました。
1875年（明治8年）創業。丹後ちりめん文化を与謝野町岩滝から支え続けてきた織物工場です。今回は、代表取締役の安田博美さんにご案内いただき、生糸一本から織り上がるまでの全工程を自社で行う現場を見学しました。丸仙では、伝統に根ざした技術でシルク100％のちりめんを織り上げています。

工場内では、熟練の職人たちが強い撚りを加えた緯糸によって生まれる独特の「しぼ」や、光沢のあるシルクの表情が丁寧に仕上げられていく様子を間近に拝見。

安田さんは、ドキュメンタリー映画『森を織る。』の中でも、「丹後ちりめんの生地が精練から返ってきて、広げた瞬間、その美しさにいつも感動する」と語っておられました。その言葉どおり、布を広げたときに立ち現れる艶やかな表情からは、長い工程と人の手が積み重なってきた時間が感じられます。

昔ながらの風呂敷生地づくりから始まった丸仙の仕事は、近年では寝具やボディタオル、洋服素材など、日常を豊かにするテキスタイルへと広がっています。

また、丸仙が手がけるオリジナルブランド SOIE CÉLESTE（ソワセレスト） の展開も進み、ちりめんのもつしなやかさや光沢を暮らしの中へ届ける取り組みも印象的でした。

今回は、MORI WO ORU Design Studio 監修のもと、丸仙さんの丹後ちりめん生地の草木染めワークショップを体験。

染料や絞り方によって、それぞれの色味や個性が、少しずつ表情となって浮かび上がっていく。
どんなテキスタイルに仕上がるのか、ワクワクしながらも、染まるのを待つ時間さえ愛おしく感じられます。

バンドを外し、生地を広げた瞬間、弾ける笑顔と笑い声が飛び交う。
人と丹後ちりめんのやさしさが織り重なった、かけがえのない、素敵な時間が流れていました。

We visited Marusen Co., Ltd., a long-established manufacturer of Tango chirimen.

Founded in 1875 (Meiji 8), Marusen has long supported the culture of Tango chirimen from Iwataki in Yosano Town. This time, we were guided by Ms. Hiromi Yasuda, President and CEO of the company, and had the opportunity to tour the workshop where every step—from a single strand of raw silk to the finished fabric—is carried out in-house. Rooted in tradition, Marusen continues to weave 100% silk chirimen with great care and craftsmanship.

Inside the factory, we observed up close how skilled artisans carefully finish the fabric, creating the distinctive shibo (crêpe texture) through strongly twisted weft threads, and bringing out the lustrous beauty unique to silk.
In the documentary film Weaving the Forest, Ms. Yasuda speaks of how “each time Tango chirimen returns from the scouring process and is spread out, I am always moved by its beauty.” True to her words, the glossy surface revealed when the fabric is opened speaks of the long processes and countless human hands layered over time.

What began with the production of traditional furoshiki fabrics has, in recent years, expanded into textiles that enrich everyday life—such as bedding, body towels, and materials for clothing. Marusen’s original brand, SOIE CÉLESTE, also left a strong impression, bringing the softness and sheen of chirimen into contemporary living.

We also took part in a plant-dyeing workshop using Tango chirimen fabric by Marusen, supervised by MORI WO ORU Design Studio.

As the dye and binding techniques work their magic, each piece slowly reveals its own colors and character. Waiting for the fabric to transform—wondering what kind of textile it will become—felt exciting, and even the passing time itself became something to cherish.

The moment the bands were removed and the fabric was unfolded, bursts of smiles and laughter filled the room.
It was a truly special time, where the warmth of people and the gentle beauty of Tango chirimen were woven together.

与謝野町の静かな山間にある「かや山の家」へ。

糸あそびの山本さん親子もお迎えし、夜は懇親会。
オーナー・シェフの青木さんが腕によりをかけて作ってくれたジビエの創作料理や地酒に舌鼓を打ちながら、世界のテキスタイルのトレンドや丹後の印象について、気づけば時間を忘れて語り合っていました。

山本昇汰さんがデザインしたシルクのコートも、ご自身がモデルとなってお披露目。
正直めちゃくちゃカッコイイ…！
いつの日か、海外のコレクションのランウェイを颯爽と歩く姿を見られる日が、今から楽しみでなりません。

翌朝の朝食には、土鍋で炊き立てのご飯にお味噌汁、丁寧に用意された総菜が並び、ゆったりとした贅沢な時間が流れます。
お部屋からは、朝の陽ざしに照らされた田園風景が広がっていました。

天候が変わりやすい丹後ならではの気候「うらにし」のおかげで、この日は空にきれいな虹が。
丹後の自然からの贈り物に、思わず心が躍り、その美しさに見とれてしまう朝でした。

We headed to Kayayama no Ie, nestled in the quiet mountains of Yosano Town.

In the evening, we hosted a warm and relaxed gathering, welcoming Mr. Yamamoto and his son from Itoasobi as our guests. While enjoying creative game dishes and local sake thoughtfully prepared by owner-chef Mr. Aoki, conversations naturally unfolded—ranging from global textile trends to first impressions of Tango—until we lost track of time.

A silk coat designed by S***a Yamamoto was also unveiled, with S***a himself modeling the piece.
Simply stunning.
We can’t help but look forward to the day when his work confidently walks the runway of an international collection.

The next morning began with a comforting breakfast: freshly cooked rice from a clay pot, miso soup, and carefully prepared side dishes. A sense of unhurried luxury filled the air. From the room, we looked out over a rural landscape softly illuminated by the morning light.

Thanks to Tango’s ever-changing weather—known locally as uranishi—a beautiful rainbow appeared in the sky that day.
A gift from nature that made our hearts leap, leaving us quietly captivated by its beauty.

世界のトップファッションブランドからも注目を集める、創作工房 糸あそび。
丹後ちりめんの産地・与謝野町にある工房を訪れました。

今回は、代表の山本 徹さんに工房をご案内いただき、染めから織りまでを一貫して行う現場を見学。手織り、ジャカード織、カラミ織、ドビー織など、さまざまな技法と色・素材の組み合わせから生まれる布の数々の中には、品質の高い国産絹糸にこだわったテキスタイルもあり、同じ絹でもここまで表情が変わるのかと、参加者は目の前に広がる美しい作品に思わず見入っていました。

中でも、4mm幅の絹リボンを織り上げるシルクリボン織機は、糸あそびならではの素材表現として目を引く存在でした。工房を巡りながら、布一反ごとに異なる表情を見比べる時間も、心に残るひとときでした。

山本さんのものづくりに対する真摯な想いや作品の数々を拝見し、糸の色や質感、組み合わせによって変わる布の表情を目の前にしながら、素材と遊ぶように向き合う楽しさが伝わってきました。
今回、創作工房 糸あそびのものづくりに触れ、テキスタイルの可能性についてあらためて考えさせられる、貴重な時間となりました。

Itoasobi, a creative textile studio attracting attention from the world’s top fashion brands.
We visited their workshop in Yosano Town, a key production area of Tango chirimen.

During our visit, we were guided through the workshop by Toru Yamamoto, the studio’s representative, and had the opportunity to see the entire process—from dyeing to weaving. Among the many textiles created through a wide range of techniques such as hand weaving, jacquard weaving, leno weaving, and dobby weaving, there were also works made with a strong focus on high-quality domestically produced silk. Seeing these pieces up close, participants were struck by how dramatically the expression of silk can change.

One highlight was the silk ribbon loom, which weaves delicate 4mm-wide silk ribbons. This unique approach to material expression felt distinctive to Itoasobi. Walking through the workshop and comparing the different textures and expressions of each bolt of fabric became a moment that stayed with us.

Through Yamamoto’s sincere approach to craftsmanship and the many works we were shown, it became clear how the colors, textures, and combinations of threads transform the fabric, conveying the joy of engaging with materials in a playful and thoughtful way.
Spending time with Itoasobi’s work offered a valuable opportunity to reflect on the possibilities of textiles.

丹後ちりめんの産地・京丹後に工房を構える、谷勝織物工場。

今回は、三代目を継ぐ谷口能啓さんに、無地ちりめんを専門とする織りの現場をご案内いただきました。

谷勝織物工場は、丹後ちりめんの中でも特に繊細さが求められる「無地ちりめん」を手がける織元です。無地であるがゆえに、ごまかしのきかない織物。その分、糸の撚りや張り、織りの精度が、そのまま布の表情として現れます。水を使いながら高い張力で撚糸を行う「水撚り八丁撚糸」を用い、平織で丁寧に織り上げることで、控えめながら奥行きのある丹後ちりめんならではのシボを生み出しています。

谷口さんが布について語る姿から、無地ちりめんに求められる精度の高さと覚悟が伝わってきました。

受け継がれてきた技を深く掘り下げながら、現代の感性や用途へと静かにつなげていく谷口さんの仕事は、谷勝織物工場という場そのものとして、丹後ちりめんの現在と未来を映し出しているように思います。

Tanikatsu Textile Factory is located in Kyotango, the heart of the Tango chirimen silk-weaving region.

During our visit, we were guided through the workshop by Yoshihiro Taniguchi, the third-generation weaver who now carries on the craft. Tanikatsu specializes in plain chirimen, a form of silk crepe that demands an exceptional level of precision. Because the fabric is unadorned, there is no room to hide imperfections—every detail of the yarn tension and weaving accuracy appears directly in the cloth.

At the factory, high-tension silk yarns are prepared using the traditional mizuyori hatchō nenshi technique, in which twisting is performed with water. These yarns are then woven in a plain weave, producing a restrained yet deeply textured crepe that is characteristic of Tango chirimen. The simplicity of the structure makes the craftsmanship all the more exacting.

Listening to Taniguchi speak about the fabric, it became clear how much precision and commitment are required to work with plain chirimen. His words reflected a quiet determination to understand the material thoroughly and to refine the craft through careful, continuous practice.

By delving deeply into inherited techniques while gently connecting them to contemporary sensibilities and uses, Taniguchi’s work—embodied in Tanikatsu Textile Factory itself—offers a thoughtful reflection on both the present and the future of Tango chirimen.

ドキュメンタリー映画「森を織る。」にも登場した、丹後ちりめんの老舗織元・田勇機業。

今回は、ちりめん工場の中を代表取締役の田茂井勇人さんにご案内いただきました。

1931年創業。撚糸から整経、製織、加工までを自社で一貫して行い、丹後ちりめん特有の風合いを生み出し続けてきた織元です。中でも、水を使いながら高密度に撚りをかける「水撚り八丁撚糸」は、しなやかさと奥行きのあるシボを生む、丹後ならではの技術として今も受け継がれています。 織機の音、糸の張り、職人の手の動き。

その一つひとつから、自然と向き合いながら絹織物を生み出してきた時間の積み重ねを感じる訪問でした。

伝統を守ることと、未来へ手渡すこと。その間にある問いに向き合い続ける田勇機業の仕事は、ドキュメンタリー映画「森を織る。」が描く世界と、静かに、そして確かに響き合っているように思います。

Tayuh Textile, a long-established Tango chirimen weaving workshop, also appears in the documentary film Weaving the Forest.

On this occasion, we were guided through the chirimen factory by President Hayato Tamoi.

Founded in 1931, Tayuh Textile carries out every stage of production in-house—from silk twisting and warping to weaving and finishing—continuing to create the distinctive texture of Tango chirimen. Among its defining techniques is mizuyori hatchō nenshi, a traditional method of high-density silk twisting performed with water, which produces the supple, deep crepe texture unique to this region and is still carefully preserved today.

The sound of the looms, the tension of the threads, and the movements of the artisans’ hands. Each detail spoke of the long passage of time spent creating silk textiles in close dialogue with nature.

Balancing the preservation of tradition with the responsibility of passing it on to the future, the work of Tayuh Textile resonates quietly yet powerfully with the world portrayed in the documentary Weaving the Forest.
