この季節といえば紫陽花。
今年も各地で美しい紫陽花が楽しめそうです。
北斎と聞くと、風景画をイメージしがちですが、このような美しい花鳥画も描いていました。

バック一面を黄色で摺ることを「黄つぶし」と言います。ひと雨ごとに色づいてきた紫陽花と背景の淡く優しい雰囲気に対して、シャープな動きを加える燕。このシリーズは、絵はもちろんですが、構図も一枚一枚素晴らしく、自然と動物の生命が表現されています。

June has arrived, and just like that, 2026 is almost halfway through.
This is the season of hydrangeas, and beautiful blooms are appearing across Japan once again.
When we hear the name Hokusai, we often think of landscapes, but he also created beautiful kachō-ga (flower-and-bird prints), like this one.
Printing the entire background in yellow is called “ki-tsubushi.” In contrast to the hydrangeas gradually coming into color with the season’s rains and the soft, gentle atmosphere of the pale background, the swallow adds a sharp sense of movement.

舞台は埼玉県川越市。
江戸情緒が残る、蔵造りが美しい城下町に高くそびえる「時の鐘」を描いた作品です。
この現代の「名所絵」を「藍摺絵（あいずりえ）」として制作し、題して「時鐘江戸俤（ときのかね えどのおもかげ）」としました。
「藍摺絵」とは「藍色」の濃淡だけで表現した木版画です。
ごく僅かに「薄紅」を使う趣向も江戸時代からあるので、夕方の風景を薄紅を流し表現しました。
青空の藍色から茜空へ移り変わる繊細なグラデーションも魅力のひとつです。
完成した作品と版木を見比べることで、浮世絵が色ごとに版木を分け、幾重にも摺り重ねて制作されていることが分かります。
また、空に浮かぶ雲には、「きめ出し」と呼ばれる浮世絵独特の技法を使用し、立体感と柔らかな質感を表現しています。

Set in Kawagoe, Saitama, this work depicts “Toki no Kane,” the iconic bell tower that stands in a beautiful former castle town known for its traditional kura-style storehouses and Edo-period atmosphere.

This contemporary “meisho-e” (picture of a famous place) was created as an “aizuri-e” and titled “Vestiges of Edo at Toki no Kane”.
“Aizuri-e” refers to woodblock prints expressed only through shades of indigo blue.
The subtle use of “usubeni” (pale crimson) is also a style that has existed since the Edo period. Here, it was added as a soft wash to express the evening scenery.
One of the charms of this work is the delicate gradation from the indigo blue of the sky to the warm tones of twilight.
By comparing the finished print with the woodblocks, you can see how Ukiyo-e are made by separating the blocks by color and printing layer upon layer.
The clouds floating in the sky also use a distinctive Ukiyo-e technique called “kime-dashi,” creating a sense of depth and a soft texture.

ロックバンドKISSのメンバー4人を描いた、UKIYO-E PROJECTの作品の中でも人気な現代浮世絵⚡️
彼らのメイクは日本の歌舞伎からインスパイアされたとも言われており、歌舞伎の役者絵として制作いたしました。
浮世絵と並ぶのは、実際に摺りに使用した版木です。
髪の毛一本一本まで彫られた「毛割」の細かさは圧巻です…！

着物の柄は赤穂浪士をベースにしており、浮世絵の技法「雲母摺（きらずり）」を使って、本来は白い部分を鼠色に雲母（きら）で光沢をだし、KISSらしさを表現しました。背景には、メンバーの名前が漢字で書かれています。

Their iconic makeup draws inspiration from Japanese kabuki, and this work was created in the style of a kabuki actor print.

The kimono patterns are inspired by the Akō rōshi, the legendary forty-seven rōnin. Using the Ukiyo-e technique known as “kirazuri” — mica printing — the areas that would normally be left white were given a gray, shimmering mica finish to express the distinctive atmosphere of KISS.

〈何色も摺り重ねて完成する浮世絵、なぜずれずに摺れるの？〉
1枚の和紙に何度も色を摺り重ねて制作される浮世絵ですが、なぜ毎回ずれることなく同じ位置に摺ることができるのでしょうか？

↓
主版が彫り上がると最後に、「見当（けんとう）」を彫ります。見当とは、色版を正確に摺り重ねるための目印のことを指します。L字型の“鍵”と、I字型の“引き付け”を見当鑿（けんとうのみ）で彫っていきます。色版にもあり、全ての版木に彫られています。
ここに和紙を合わせることによって、何十回・何百回と摺り重ねてもずれずに浮世絵が完成するんですね😊

摺体験用の版木にも、もちろん彫ってあります。この見当にいかに綺麗に合わせることができるかが、浮世絵を上手く摺る肝です✨

〈Why don’t Ukiyo-e prints shift out of place, even when multiple colors are layered?〉

Ukiyo-e prints are made by printing many layers of color onto a single sheet of washi paper. But how is it possible to print in the same position each time, without the image shifting?

↓
Once the key block has been carved, the “kento” registration marks are added. Kento are guide marks that help align each color block accurately during printing.
They consist of an L-shaped mark called the “kagi” and a straight mark called the “hikitsuke”, carved with a special tool called a “kento-nomi”. These marks are carved into every block, including the color blocks.
By aligning the washi paper with these marks, the printer can layer colors dozens, or even hundreds, of times without the image shifting!😊
Of course, the woodblocks used in our hands-on workshops also have kento marks. Being able to align the paper neatly with the kento is one of the keys to printing Ukiyo-e beautifully✨

使用している版木は、江戸時代の初摺にできる限り近づけることを目指し、UKIYO-E PROJECTアドバイザー・新藤茂氏監修のもと、メトロポリタン美術館所蔵作品を参考に、彫師・三代目関岡扇令によって彫られたものです。
浮世絵の技術を受け継ぐ摺師が、木版画ならではの繊細な摺りの工程を、わかりやすく丁寧に解説しながら摺り上げていきます。
また、同じデザインの版木を使用した摺体験も実施しております。
摺体験用の版木は、実際に職人が使用しているものより小さく、どなたでも気軽に摺っていただけるサイズとなっております。
完成した作品は、ご自宅へお持ち帰りいただけます。
これまでご好評いただいていた「小野小町」の版木に加え、最近では「冨嶽三十六景 神奈川沖浪裏」の版木も体験用として加わりました。

At UKIYO-E PROJECT, we offer woodblock printing demonstrations and hands-on printing workshops ✨
During the live demonstration, you can watch Katsushika Hokusai’s “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji: The Great Wave off Kanagawa” gradually come to life, accompanied by explanations from a professional artisan 🌊
The woodblocks used in the demonstration were carved by third-generation woodcarver Sekioka Senrei, under the supervision of UKIYO-E PROJECT advisor Shigeru Shindo, with reference to the original print in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.They were made to recreate the early Edo-period impressions as closely as possible.

A traditional Ukiyo-e printer carefully completes the artwork while explaining the delicate process unique to woodblock printing.
We also offer hands-on printing workshops using woodblocks of the same design. The woodblocks used for the workshop are smaller than those used by professional artisans, making them easy for anyone to try. Participants can take their finished prints home with them.
Along with our popular “Ono no Komachi” woodblocks, you can now experience printing “The Great Wave off Kanagawa.”
We are available to visit schools, companies, organizations, and other venues for on-site demonstrations and workshops.

Unique business cards are created by a team of traditional Edo calligrapher, woodcarver, and printer, all masters of their crafts that were passed on to them from generation to generation for over 400 years⚒️

We use handmade washi (Japanese paper) called “Echizen Kisuki Bousho” from Fukui prefecture, that is fabricated with 100% mulberry fiber. This paper, both strong and supple, has been used for ukiyo-e and Japanese painting from the 17th century 🗒

Each business card is made by hand, therefore, there may be subtle differences in each and every card (such as color intensity and washi thickness). These are all characteristic of woodblock prints, so we hope you enjoy the originality of each piece. 
You can feel the business card to be somewhat nostalgic and heartwarming😌

上智大学での浮世絵摺体験イベント🌊✨
今回は、浮世絵についての座学に加え、プロの摺師による「神奈川沖浪裏」の実演も実施しました。
実際に摺りの工程を間近で見ていただく中で、会場では自然と質疑応答も飛び交い、学生の皆さまが興味深く耳を傾けてくださる様子がとても印象に残りました。
その後、学生の皆さまにも実際に同じ浪裏の摺りを体験していただき、プロの技術の繊細さや奥深さを、より身近に感じていただける機会となりました。
留学生の方も多く、さまざまな国籍の方々と交流しながら、日本の伝統文化に興味を持って真剣に取り組んでくださる姿も見ることができました。
今回のイベントでは、「神奈川沖浪裏」と「小野小町」の2種類の版木を使用した摺体験を実施。
やはり「神奈川沖浪裏」はインパクトもあり、とても人気でした✨
最後は参加してくださった皆さまと一緒に集合写真も撮影！
次回は「赤富士」の版木のお披露目もあるかも…？！👀

Ukiyo-e Woodblock Printing Workshop at Sophia University 🌊✨
This time, alongside an introduction to Ukiyo-e, participants also watched a live demonstration of “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” by a printer.
As students observed the printing process up close, questions naturally filled the room, and it was great to see everyone so engaged and curious about Japanese traditional culture.
After the demonstration, participants also had the chance to print the same image themselves using the actual woodblocks used by the artisans.
Many of the students came from overseas, making it a special opportunity to connect with people from many different backgrounds through Japanese traditional culture.
For this workshop, participants printed with two different woodblocks: “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” and “Ono no Komachi.”
“The Great Wave off Kanagawa” was especially popular thanks to its striking visual impact
We wrapped up the event with a group photo together with all the participants ！
Maybe next time we’ll also introduce the new “Red Fuji” woodblock…?! 👀
