The Void — Statement
Recently, I have come to feel something very strongly:
the places we are drawn to, and the people we feel compelled to meet, often carry a reason beyond our understanding.
When I look at myself and the world around me, I realize that, for better or worse, both my thoughts and my life are shaped by a kind of chaos.
Yet it is precisely within that chaos that meaningful encounters emerge.
When trying to create something, we sometimes meet people who can share, understand, and even help give form to that uncertainty.
An exhibition is never made alone.
This is something deeply important to me.
Had I not met Masaho Anotani, COOL, and many others along the way, my life might have unfolded very differently.
Void is a gallery founded in 2019 in Kasai City, Hyogo Prefecture, by several people including myself. Shortly after opening, the person originally responsible for planning left the gallery, and unexpectedly, that became the beginning of my life as a curator.
This exhibition marks my first experience presenting work outside Japan.
The works shown here were created between 2019 and 2026, including pieces completed right up until the final stages of packing.
We give names to untitled works, challenge ourselves with larger canvases, and continue focusing on what can be done today.
Through the accumulation of these daily acts, boundaries between the urban and the natural gradually begin to dissolve. Fallen objects, soil, and overgrown plants become clues that guide us toward the surface of the canvas.
Through this exhibition, I hope to share the unique artistic sensibility that emerges from the ordinary suburbs found throughout contemporary Japan, and to let it travel beyond the sea.
