When you decide to make washi at home, one of the challenges you will face is what to do with Neri.
Tororoaoi, a typical raw material for Neri, is a variety of okra.
This time, I experimented with three soaking time: 30 minutes, one hour, and two hours. The paper is not yet dry, but the two-hour one was better. It might be better to leave it longer.
The 30 minutes one was weak and almost useless. The paper was uneven, as if it had been formed without Neri. You can see it in the image of it drying on a board, the lower right one.
The upper left paper in the image of drying, on the other hand, is quite thin and even. It seems that okra can be used for Neri for at least to a point.
The problem is how to eat the okra after taking the neri from them. Okra is my favorite vegetable, and I want to eat it well, but the okra after it has been soaked in water is so sticky that it makes me feel a little sick.
This time, I ate it as tempura. It tasted okay, but there were too much of them, so I guess it's better to use a little okra and soak in water for a longer time.
We will be giving another talk at the clubhouse on the theme of "making washi at home" so please feel free to join us!
The room starts Feb 3rd 21:00 JST, 12:00 GMT, 7:00 EST. https://www.clubhouse.com/event/xnRRXR9X
