藍建て indigo vat preparation
染色棟に併設されている藍部屋。(写真1)
藍甕の並ぶ半地下室。気温も保ちやすくなっています。
昨日、藍建てを行いました。
あいにく陶製じゃなくて、ポリ製なんですが⋯
(陶製は入手激困難。割れるし)
まず、以前に作った泥藍を入れます。(写真2)
それから灰汁の投入。(写真3)
そして蜂蜜。工房製の蜂蜜はもったいないので、これは市販。(写真4)
次いでアルコール。これはインド製ウィスキー。(写真5)
また灰汁投入。(写真6)
最後にお祈り。生物相手なので。(写真7)
同じ染色棟では毎日繭から生糸をズリ出しています。これは淡黄色のコーラルゴールド繭。(写真8)
同棟の水槽には藍で染めたての生糸が。(写真9)
十年も藍建てをしていると、この部屋にもすっかり藍建菌が住みつき、手順にも工夫を重ね、今ではほとんど百発百中で藍が建ちます。
(世界広しと謂えども、自分のところで藍を栽培して藍建てして自前糸に染めて織る工房ってチト珍しいはず)
Attached to the dyeing building is our indigo room, a semi-underground space lined with indigo vats. (Photo 1)
The temperature stays relatively stable here, making it ideal for maintaining the vats.
Yesterday, we prepared a fresh indigo vat.
The vats are polyethylene rather than ceramic—ceramic ones are extremely difficult to obtain, and of course they can break.
First comes mud indigo prepared earlier. (Photo 2)
Then ash water. (Photo 3)
Honey follows—commercial honey, since our workshop-made honey is too precious to use. (Photo 4)
Next, alcohol: Indian wh**ky. (Photo 5)
Then more ash water. (Photo 6)
And finally, a prayer. After all, we are working with living organisms. (Photo 7)
In the same building, raw silk is reeled from cocoons every day. These are pale yellow Coral Gold cocoons. (Photo 8)
Nearby, freshly indigo-dyed raw silk rests in a tank. (Photo 9)
After ten years of preparing indigo vats here, the indigo-fermenting microbes seem to have thoroughly settled into the room. We have also refined the process over the years, and these days our vats become active almost without fail.
(There may not be many workshops that grow their own indigo, prepare their own vats, dye their own yarn, and then weave it themselves)
