Caring for Basho
This morning, we were trimming our basho plants, cutting back the overgrown stalks.
Careful maintenance through the summer helps us harvest strong, beautiful fibers in winter.
Since this land was originally an orchard, there are mango trees everywhere.
The fruits are still unripe, but this seems to be an off year, with fewer mangoes than usual.
Next to them hang jackfruits (Photo 3).
Fortunately, they are abundant this year, and it is now the season for young jackfruit.
In the Himalayas, unripe jackfruit is highly valued as a vegetable, and it appears on our table as a main dish every few days (Photo 4).
At the nearby farm stand (Photo 5), you'll find mangoes, lychees, jackfruit, honey...
We harvest all of these here at ganga studio, too.
