【Matanpusi or headband】
Matanpusi is made of cotton cloth, satin, or attus. In addition to plain ones, some were embroidered or cut out of cloth and embroidered on top of it to create various patterns for men and women. The shapes and sizes also varied, with some being wide at the forehead and tapering off at the ends, others being folded to a certain width, and still others being ring-shaped. There are several ways to tie it, such as wrapping it around the forehead and tying it at the front, or tying it at the back of the head or at the side of the head (above the ears), in some regions the way of fastening varies depending on the occasion such as a celebration or a funeral. There is also a type of headband used only by women called chipanupu.

【Shibamata 柴又 Taishakuten 帝釈天 Temple】
This temple, commonly called Taishakuten but it is formally known as Daikyoji Temple 題経寺, has been treasured by people for nearly 400 years.
It is also known as the temple of wood sculptures. The upper parts of the outer panels were carved with the twelve signs of the Oriental zodiac and celestial beings as well, the lower parts with many cranes. And the bottom ones were made up of the flowers, birds and turtles. Takeshi Ihachi Ⅳ 四代目武志伊八 or Nobuaki 信明, his real name was Takaishi Senzo 高石仙蔵, had made up them. The great master of sculptor Ihachi 伊八 had been widely acknowledged as for "Ihachi of the waves 波の伊八,", whose name had been taken over by excellent pupils from generation to generation. Ihachi Ⅳ or Takaishi Senzo was said to have left sculptures on most of the buildings, and so some people call Shibamata Taishakuten, especially Teishakudo 帝釈堂, the "Museum of Nobuaki IV's Techniques".

【Special Exhibition YOSHIWARA 2024 3/26-5/19】

Yoshiwara in Edo is known as the pleasure quarter licensed by the Tokugawa shogunate. The brothels were built upon the sacrifice of the courtesans who were bound into service to repay their debts and could not quit of their own free will. It was a system that would not be condoned today and must never again be repeated. At the same time, Yoshiwara, which continued operating for about 250 years, was also at the forefront of transmitting trends in literature and the arts as well as fashion.

This work was created with the image of the Omise 大見世 or large brothel in the Bunka-Bunsei period (1804-1830). The title of diorama was “YOSHIWARA” when it was exhibited. In a two-story building made of all-cypress, measuring 268.0 cm (frontage), 235 cm (depth), and 81.5 cm (height) by craftsman Miura Hiroshi, 23 dolls by doll creator Tsujimura Jusaburo and approximately 400 exquisite furnishings by craftsman Hattori Ichiro. It created a three-dimensional representation of a brothel scene depicted in nishiki-e錦絵 and books of that time.

Since around the middle of the Edo period, it had been the custom in Yoshiwara 吉原 to plant cherry trees in full bloom in the main street on March 1 every year, and to create a special row of cherry trees. Japanese kerria and lamps were set on ground and green bamboo fences were surrounding them. Painter Utagawa Hiroshige 歌川広重 attempted to depict the row of cherry using the perspective drawing method with two vanishing points. He had seen the corner of building, where the perspective method started with the vanishing points on either side. In the center of the picture, the moon, first tree of the row and an Oiran 花魁 were gathered on the central axis.

【Hayokpira】
“Hayokpira", means "armed cliff" in Ainu language, is located in neighborhood of Biratori Shrine and facing the Saru River. It is said that Okikurmi Kamuy, the founder of the Ainu people, descended to this place long time ago and taught the Ainu people house building, weaving from bark of a tree, hunting and other wisdom of life.
The structure in a photo had been constructed at Hayokpira by members of CBA or Cosmic Brotherhood Association to communicate with alien from outer space.

【Names of the bus stops in Ainu language (within Biratori-cho : from Shinnitou to Ninarachimipu)】
● Names of the bus stops in Ainu language were determined by the old names of places and rivers flowing nearby, and by translating their names in Japanese into Ainu language as precisely as possible.
● When we thought it difficult to translate the name into Ainu, the Japanese name was used as it was.
* 〇〇 (Name of Japanese bus stop), then attaching with the Ainu word “SEKORAIeUSI" means "A place called 〇〇".

Names of places in Hokkaido mostly come from Ainu language. It certifies that Hokkaido had been Ainu “Mosiri” (country or land). However, they have been changed by applying Japanese Kanji characters or by using Japanese pronunciation to Japanese kana since the Meiji period. As a result the original meanings with Ainu language in many case have been lost.
You will find easily that place names attaching with “Nai” (内Uchi) and “Betsu” (別Betsu), meaning river or stream, are seen in many places of Hokkaido. According to Mr. Yamada Shuzo, a researcher of place name, the difference between "Nai" and "Betsu" is generally that “Nai” should be referring to creek, and “Betsu” to big river in Hokkaido, apart from a few exceptions. (from Mr.Yamada’s “Study of Ainu language race”)
Even in Hokkaido people in some region have tendency to used many “Nai”, while in other regions people take “Betsu”. Through these distribution in Ainu languages, we may say that there had been a distinguish between the northern and southern race of Ainu. The abundance of the name of “Nai” and “Betsu” also teaches us how the Ainu people depended heavily on rivers for their livelihood. The rivers did not only provide salmon and trout to them, but also indispensable transportation routes for hunting deep in the mountains and trading with people in the distant regions.
