Family, we had a blast last night at WeRSoca. If you didn’t make it you missed a time!

I continue to reflect on the night…

Is it just me, or do other folks think the DJ’s played more dancehall than soca?

Is it just me, or did other folks also notice that the crowd was significantly more hyped when the dancehall music played and less so when soca music played?

And is it just me, or does the dancehall reggae music these days sound more and more like Afrobeats?

Trying to see something here. Let me know what you observed. Prosper, Shae, and I were paying attention to this throughout the night.

PS—this is not a critique. I’m clear that we are in Jamaica—and reggae—Dancehall in particular—is King. And for the record I had a ball partying to both—dancehall and soca.

In the link below are 7 songs from the 2025 carnival season. If you don’t know them already put them in your rotation. Familiarize yourself with the lyrics. Practice your wining and jumping. Most of all feel the spirit.

DJ Umoja here. My soulmate, Yanique and I host a soca music set in our backyard every month. Living here in Jamaica we've realized that people aren't as well versed in soca music and the culture. So then, I'll be popping through here regularly with a short set of songs, inviting our folks to listen,...

Soca Lime Poll:

Here’s the story. I was trying thief a whine at our first Soca Backyard Lime Event. Yanique said that whining isnt supposed to happen at a Soca Lime. Consequently, Yanique and I are now having a debate (energetic conversation) about the “appropriate” energy and during a Soca Lime.
