It is operated by Derrick “Pablo” Hoilett, a veteran theatre and television practitioner. The operation of Theatre Place has been authorized by The National Environment and Planning Agency. The theatre is located at 8 Haining Road, New Kingston. Theatre Place is constructed in a warehouse made of concrete and steel. The warehouse was extensively renovated and made sound proof adequate for the purp
ose for which it is used. Theatre Place has a seating capacity of 300 and offers a comfortable fully air conditioned auditorium with wheelchair access for users of wheelchairs. The seats are the spring powered flip-up customized type normally used in cinemas and are arranged to give a panoramic view of the spacious 41’ x 23’ stage. Amenities include male and female restrooms, a foyer and ticket office, refreshment area, backstage dressing rooms with toilet and shower. PROFILE
The plays put on at Theatre Place are at the higher end of the theatre fare in Jamaica. The works of our distinguished practitioners; Trevor Rhone, Debra Earhart, Gloria Lannaman, David Heron, Basil Dawkins, Oliver Samuels, Dahlia Harris, The Area Youth Foundation to name a few, have been staged there. Theatre Place has staged fund-raisers for the charitable endeavors of The Press Association of Jamaica, various Lions, Kiwanis and other social clubs, churches, lodges, The University Hospital and Parent–teachers Associations of various schools. Use of the facility has also been made by The National Health Fund and The Jamaica Observer. The list of sponsors of various events at Theatre Place include: The Chase Fund, The RJR Group, CVM and The Gleaner. Patrons of some of the events held include former Prime Minister P. Patterson, Mrs. Lorna Golding, various Government representatives at Ministerial and other levels, numerous corporate leaders and embassy officials. Both theatre goers and theatre artistes have unanimously expressed their preference for and appreciation of this theatre and routinely enquire about upcoming activities. PARKING
The premises have parking facilities and there are existing parking arrangements with:
a) Spectrum Insurance Brokers b) Chin’s Printing c) Altamont Court Hotel at their premises on which Simply Delicious is located. No one attending Theatre Place is allowed to park on the street. JOBS
The various projects that are done on a rotation basis provide direct employment for playwrights, directors, designers, technicians, actors and actresses, stage managers, carpenters, seamstresses, public relations specialists, typists, caterers, photographers, videographers, editors, graphic artists, printers, scene painters, janitor, security guards, parking attendants etc. YOUTH
As a matter of policy, Theatre Place has made it possible for young emerging playwrights and other youth practitioners to get a start in the field. The engagement of graduates and under graduates of The Jamaica School of Drama and The Excelsior Community College School of the Performing Arts on various projects is ongoing.
