Increased IQ
A study by E. Glenn Schellenberg at the University of Toronto at Mississauga, as published in a 2004 issue of Psychological Science, found a small increase in the IQs of six-year-olds who were given weekly voice and piano lessons. Schellenberg provided nine months of piano and voice lessons to a dozen six-year-olds, drama lessons (to see if exposure to arts in general versus just music had an effect) to a second group of six-year-olds, and no lessons to a third group. The children’s IQs were tested before entering the first grade, then again before entering the second grade.

Surprisingly, the children who were given music lessons over the school year tested on average three IQ points higher than the other groups. The drama group didn’t have the same increase in IQ, but did experience increased social behaviour benefits not seen in the music-only group.

At Bowman Music Centre, we are proud to say that with the uncertainty presented by COVID-19, we were the first in the Caribbean to make a complete transition from face-to-face to online music lessons in April 2020. This culminated in the first online recital from Jamaica which was viewed by supporters from around the globe. We are pleased to share a few of the presentations with you. https://bowmanmusiccentre.mymusicstaff.com/Videos

Check out the highlights from this year's recital and Father's day show!

A formal recital and awards ceremony is held at the end of the summer term each year. Our objective is to build students confidence by having them perform for their classmates, members of their family and invited friends.

This year our recital was also a Father's day celebration. After several exciting performances by our students, our audience was treated to vibrant performances by Amanda Vibez, Pam Hall and several legendary Jamaican musicians. The musicians were Lloyd "Obeah" Denton on Piano, Paul "Computer Paul" Henton on Bass, Earl "Chinna" Smith on Guitar, Eric "Twin" Samuels on Drums, Everald "Singwray" Wray on Trumpet and Tafawee Buchsaecab on Saxophone.

This year's recital was nothing short of amazing and 2016's recital will be even better! Enroll now at www.bowmanmusicja.com. Book your preferred time early.
