Following on from our enjoyable and successful concert at St Ouen's last month, thoughts are now turning to our G&S Festival, which takes place in October this year.

At the heart of our Festival will be evening performances of HMS Pinafore (Friday 16th October) and The Pirates of Penzance (Saturday 17th October).

The shows will be "staged" with props and lots of action from costumed Principals. However, the ensemble will be static and sing from copy.

We are very excited that the major principal roles will be taken by professional soloists from the National G&S Opera Company.

Those making the trip to Jersey are currently expected to be:

Simon Butteriss, John Savournin, Phoebe Smith, Gaynor Keeble and Alex Aldren

The following minor principal parts will be cast from our very own Jersey G&S Society:

HMS Pinafore - H**e (alto), Carpenter (bass), Boatswain (baritone), Dick Deadeye (bass)

The Pirates of Penzance - Edith (mezzo), Samuel (baritone), Sergeant (bass), Kate (mezzo)

Anyone interested in auditioning for these parts is asked to let Annette know as soon as possible. Please note that anyone cast in these roles will need to learn both the dialogue and music.

Work for the chorus will start this month, with two evenings on which we will sing through both shows. These are Thursday 18th and Thursday 25th June.

All are welcome - please do spread the word to any singer who you think may be interested.

Chorus rehearsals will then resume on Thursday 20th August, with the usual Thursday / Sunday routine until the production.

PLEASE NOTE VERY IMPORTANT DATES: Thursday 10th September through to the evening of Sunday 13th September.

Chris Milton, who will be MD for the performances, will be over that weekend and will want to work with those cast as minor principals, and the chorus, so there will be extra rehearsals during that weekend for all involved.

We hope that all sounds very exciting and would ask you to email Annette at: [email protected] to

a) express an interest in taking part in the ensemble

b) express an interest in auditioning for one of the minor principal roles.

We look forward to hearing from you!

We now have some firm dates set for our productions this year:

17th May - An afternoon concert with tea and cake at St Ouen's Parish Hall, featuring a medley of G&S songs as well as some songs from the shows.
(Rehearsals will be held over a shorter period of time using Thursday evenings and/or Sunday afternoons.)

15-18th Oct - A Gilbert and Sullivan Festival

This year, we are thrilled to be joined by a professional UK-based opera company to perform Pirates of Penzance and HMS Pinafore at JCG school theatre.

The UK company will be performing the lead roles in these productions, but there will also be the opportunity for Society members to audition for some of the minor solo roles. The chorus will be static and able to use copies of the music.

OPEN CALL FOR CHORUS MEMBERS: A NEW OPERA FOR JERSEY AND WE WOULD LIKE YOUR VOICE TO BE PART OF IT ⭐️ (DEADLINE TO APPLY MIDNIGHT ON WED 7 JAN)

ArtHouse Jersey is inviting Islanders to join the chorus of Held in the Tide, a bold new opera created with and for the people of Jersey. Whether you’re an experienced singer or are completely new to performance, we’d love to hear from you. No professional music or stage experience is required - just enthusiasm, curiosity, and a willingness to work collaboratively.

The chorus is at the heart of the production, shaping the sound, energy, and emotional landscape of the story. By joining the chorus, you become part of this creative act: helping to bring the Island’s rhythms, tensions, hopes, and humour to the stage. The production includes several small supporting roles, which will be cast from within the chorus during rehearsals. If you’re interested in taking on a slightly larger role with spoken or sung moments, there will be opportunities to put yourself forward once rehearsals begin.

Whether you’re an opera regular or have never sung in a group before, this is your invitation to help shape something extraordinary - a new opera made with care, by many hands, for all of us. Check out the LINK IN COMMENTS to learn how to apply.

We played to a packed house today at St Clement Parish Hall, celebrating 150 years of Trial by Jury, along with some other much-loved songs by Gilbert and Sullivan. The afternoon also included a delicious array of tea and cake at the interval.

A huge thank you to Michael and John for their work on this production; to Annette, our Musical Director; Grace, our Accompanist; all the bakers and the helpers, and all of our fabulous audience members who supported this event and left with big smiles on their faces.

We hope you had a lovely afternoon with us!
