The Arts Society Jersey

The Arts Society Jersey Our Society brings people together through a shared curiosity for the arts. We aim to create a better, healthier and more connected society.

Our events provide a welcoming place to hear expert lecturers share their specialist knowledge on the arts. The Arts Society Jersey is one of 385 Societies throughout the UK and Europe. Take a look at the main website www.theartssociety.org and our Jersey website www.theartssocietyjersey.org. Did you know we have over 350 local Arts Societies across the UK? Here’s just a glimpse of what our members have been up to lately:

- In Thirsk, primary school children created nature-inspired artworks for display in public spaces at Herriot Hospice, in a project led by Liz Foster of The Arts Society Hambleton.
- A self-guided walk focused on public art in Acton, Hammersmith and Chiswick – a glimpse of which is seen here – was set up to celebrate the 10th anniversary of The Arts Society Chiswick. Seen here is the Mosaic House in Chiswick, the home and studio of artist Carrie Reichardt.
- The King’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a local voluntary group can receive in the UK, was given to The Arts Society Wrekin for its many and varied projects in its community.
- The Arts Society Taunton has scanned and categorised a collection of pre-1920s postcards donated to Hestercombe Archive by art historian Jeremy Cooper.

Bravo to all! Find more Society news in the latest issue of ‘The Arts Society Magazine’ – our gift to our members.

Jersey’s 147 Years War (1338–1475): What You Should Know - History & Myths! ⚔️📜 - Upcoming Talk!
🕐 Wednesday 22nd April, 1.10pm–1.50pm
📍Société Jersiaise - Members' Room

Join us for the first Lunchtime Talk as Marc Yates explores the myths, battles and impact of Jersey’s 147 Years War, a period of nearly 150 years marked by invasions, occupations, battle sites, castles, Royal Charters and long‑standing myths that deserve debunking.

Marc Yates, Chair of the Archaeology Section and Accredited Member of the Guild of Battlefield Guides, will take you through invasions, battles, occupations, devastation and even the Black Death , a period more significant to Jersey’s military and constitutional history than many later, better‑known events.

And discover why the end date of the Hundred Years War in the Channel Islands isn’t 1453…

‘Oh, what a Henry!’

We’ve all heard of Jane Austen, but what of her brother, Henry? This question is at the core of former The Arts Society Lecturer Dr Christopher Herbert’s new biography, ‘Jane Austen’s Favourite Brother, Henry’ (published by Pen and Sword Books).

In our latest issue of ‘The Arts Society Magazine’, we rounded up some of our favourite recent arts reads. If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to read more, we’ve got the perfect books to get you turning the pages…

To learn the story of a great artwork, you need just 15 minutes. Born from his famous YouTube channel of the same name, James Payne’s ‘Great Art Explained’ (published by Thames & Hudson) takes a look at 30 masterpieces, from Gustav Klimt’s ‘The Kiss’ to Claude Monet’s ‘Water Lilies’ – and is the ideal companion for clueing up your art knowledge.

If you’ve ever learnt about the Tudors, it’s likely that you’ll have seen one of Hans Holbein the Younger’s portraits. In ‘Holbein: Renaissance Master’, published by the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, Elizabeth Goldring examines the fascinating life of the man whose work has shaped, and continues to shape, our views of this time period.

While he famously dismissed Van Gogh’s paintings, critic and art historian Paul George Konody was a loud supporter of those by Derwent Lees. Lynn Davies’s ‘Derwent Lees: Art and Life’, published by Lund Humphries, digs into the story behind the proclaimed ‘most modern of the Modernists’.

Let us know which you are most looking forward to picking up in the comments below!
