Today marks exactly one month since opening to the public, and we are thrilled to share some extraordinary milestones!

In the past month alone, we have welcomed over 40,000 visitors, following a remarkable private preview that saw 28,000 guests between May 5–8. Under the leadership of our Commissioner, Secretary of State Jorge Soares Cristóvão, and with the generous support of Peter McMullin and the Good Business Foundation—our anthology sponsor—we have brought together a wonderfully diverse audience. Our guests have ranged from prominent political and diplomatic figures representing Australia, Singapore, Italy, Thailand and more, to museum curators, collectors, journalists, scholars, and a vibrant public eager to discover the culture and history of Timor-Leste.

As newcomers to the Italian cultural landscape, we are also deeply grateful for the extensive media coverage we’ve received, including features in over a dozen major Italian and international art and lifestyle magazines.

Thank you to everyone who has brought our pavilion to life. We look forward to the journey ahead!

Across Words: An Anthology goes far beyond a conventional exhibition catalogue. We felt a standard catalogue would only partially capture Timor-Leste's contemporary art, failing to reflect the broader cultural landscape of a nation still little known to international audiences.

Designed by Daniel Knew and published by Mousse Magazine and Publishing , the volume unfolds through newly commissioned articles that either respond to pavilion artists Verónica Pereira Maia, Etson Caminha and Juventino Madeira or examine Timor-Leste's culture from a wider perspective to place it firmly within contemporary global discourse.

“A thoughtful publication edited by the pavilion curator Loredana Pazzini Paracciani helps contextualise the presentation. For a post-conflict nation in which more than 30 indigenous languages are spoken, the shifting shape of identity across its differences serves as an inspiration that resonates far beyond its borders.” South China Morning Post

The anthology is now available at the Electa shops inside the Venice Biennale, as well as at major international bookstores, including Mondadori and Feltrinelli in Italy! 🇮🇹

Our tote bags — hand-woven by master weavers in Timor-Leste using traditional tais techniques — became one of the most talked-about objects of the Venice Biennale opening week. We went through hundreds in just three pre-opening days.

Each bag is a small piece of Timor-Leste. The distinctive striped weave, the vibrant colours, the gold embroidery — all rooted in a textile tradition that has carried culture, memory and identity across generations.

We are happy to have the opportunity to collaborate with the Alola foundation in creating these beautiful bags

They are available to purchase at the official Biennale shop, located at both the Arsenale and Giardini venues. 🛍️

Across Words is open now through 22 November 2026 — come visit us and take a little piece of Timor-Leste home with you.

To mark the opening of Across Words, we took to the streets of Venice for an unforgettable evening of live sound and video performance — projecting the world of Timor-Leste onto the walls of the city itself. 🎶🎥

What started as an intimate gathering turned into a night of over 120 people coming together in the heart of Venice — strangers, friends, artists, and art lovers — all connected across words.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us, and to our incredible artists Etson Caminha and Juventino Madeira as well as our wonderful producer Thomas Henning for bringing the streets of Venice to life. 🙏

Across Words is open now through 22 November 2026.

On the 7th of May, Across Words became official.

The Timor-Leste Pavilion at the 61st La Biennale di Venezia came alive with guests, press, curators, and collectors from around the world — all gathering for the first time at the Arsenale, Artiglierie, to experience a moment that felt truly historic.

The opening featured a contemporary iteration of the Verahana ritual performed live by Etson Caminha — summoning the guidance of ancestors and welcoming every visitor into a space where language, memory, and identity speak across words.

To everyone who joined us on that day — thank you. Your presence made it unforgettable. 🥂

Across Words remains open through 22 November 2026.

Today, Across Words opens its doors for the first time.

A select group of guests, press, and art world colleagues are among the very first to step inside the Timor-Leste Pavilion at the 61st La Biennale di Venezia — a moment we have been working towards for a long time and one we will not forget.

To witness the pavilion come alive for the first time, to see visitors encounter Tais Don, hear CUALE (Flow), and move through An Unfinished Sentence — it is everything we hoped it would be.

This is only the beginning. The official opening is Thursday, 7th of May at 11AM at our pavilion — and we would love for you to join us. 🥂
