Today, on what would have been her 90th birthday, INTROXPERT honors the extraordinary legacy of Barbara Rose (June 11, 1936 – December 25, 2020), one of the most influential art critics, historians, curators, filmmakers, and intellectual voices of the twentieth century.
Through her groundbreaking writings, exhibitions, films, and mentorship, Barbara helped shape our understanding of contemporary art and championed some of the most important artists of the postwar era, including Mark di Suvero, Frank Stella, Robert Rauschenberg, Helen Frankenthaler, Lee Krasner, Jasper Johns, Claes Oldenburg, Jim Dine, and many others. Her scholarship helped define the critical language through which generations have come to understand contemporary art.
Barbara's presence within the LOOK UP exhibition serves as a bridge between the great artistic voices she championed and a new generation of artists carrying forward the dialogue between creativity, humanity, and culture. The impact of Barbara's work extends far beyond the artists she wrote about directly. Her ideas, scholarship, and advocacy continue to influence contemporary artists and cultural figures participating in LOOK UP today, including artists she supported such as Nathan Brujis, Rossella Vasta, and Arturo Casanova and during her lifetime she touched many whose practices reflect the spirit of artistic inquiry and cultural engagement that Barbara dedicated her life to advancing.
Recently, an Italian publication covering LOOK UP described curator Rachel Vancelette as a "Global Cultural Architect," and their friendship, a phrase that reflects Barbara Rose's enduring belief that art can connect disciplines, cultures, generations, and communities across the world. Her ability to illuminate the deeper meaning of an artist's work remains one of her greatest gifts to the art world.
Today we celebrate Barbara Rose's remarkable life, her enduring contributions to contemporary culture, and the countless artists, curators, writers, and audiences she inspired.
Happy Birthday, Barbara Rose. Your voice, vision, and intellect continue to inspire us all to LOOK UP.
